Starship Troopers Reboot Could Be Less Violent

Paul?Verhoeven's '80s sci-fis tiptoed between kitsch and corrosive with such brass that people are still debating which bits are meant as satire and which bits aren't. His loose triptych of subversive sci-fis - Starship Troopers, Total Recall and RoboCop - are all getting a redo, with the former still in the early stages of development. In the new issue, Empire caught up with producer Toby Jaffe to find out what's planned for the former.

"The more expensive a film is, the harder it is now to make it that violent," explains Jaffe, also one of the team behind the Colin?Farrell's Total Recall. "With Recall in particular, we made a conscious choice to keep it tonally closer to something like Minority Report. It gives the studio, and us as producers, the opportunity to reintroduce it in a new way."

It's news that will land with a thump in the hearts of bug-hunt purists, but hardly a surprise. It's hard to imagine Verhoeven's gleefully violent RoboCop or Troopers sneaking through the studio system these days, and, explains Jaffe, there's little point retreading old? ground. "Verhoeven took [Robert Heinlein's 1959 novel] from one extreme and made it almost comical, whereas our job is to be a little more faithful to the book, and ground it a little more."

What's planned sounds like it will ditch the satire in favour of a straighter action play. "Verhoeven made his movie a critique of fascism," says Jaffe, "whereas Heinlein was writing from the perspective of someone who had served in?World War II. Y'know, one man's fascism is another man's patriotism..."

One element that will improve with age is the hardware. If the militaristic elements are less tongue-in-cheek, those nukes will be bigger and better. "Working in a visual-efects renaissance as we are, we have the ability to do so much more now. We can do the Jump Suits [armoured exoskeletons from Heinlein's novel], for example, which I don't think they could have done before."

Pick up the new issue of Empire from Thursday for a fresh look at Verhoeven's trippy trilogy and more from Jaffe and co. on the new generation of films.

RE: A word about the VFX
L: Galahadfairlight The comment from the producer to suggest they couldn't do the jump suits back in 1997 is patent nonsense, Verhoeven removed them largely to stop the Humans from being virtually indestructable, and to make them have a believable weakness against the bugs. The VFX for Starship Troopers still stands up today as being excellent, and I very much doubt that the VFX for the new incarnation are remotely going to make the old movie look silly! couldn't agree more. Let's face it, a p Troopers could hardly be ] violent. One of the most underrated, misunderstood and t of the 90s, if anything, Starship Troopers is even more subversive than the sublime how the Verhoeven version was a merciless piss-take of Heinlein's po-faced fascist tract - I will take the sight of Doogie Howser dressed like Herr Flick and solemnly intoning "There's a brain bug on Planet P!" with me to the grave. Biden, in leaked memo, told Obama war plan flawed

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As President Barack Obama considered adding as many as 40,000 U.S. forces to a backsliding war in Afghanistan in 2009, Vice President Joe Biden warned him that the military rationale for doing so was flawed, a new book about Obama's expansion of the conflict says.

The book, "Little America: The War Within the War for Afghanistan," also says that in planning the drawdown of troops two years later, the White House intentionally sidelined the CIA. Obama purposely did not read a grim CIA assessment of Afghanistan that found little measurable benefit from the 30,000 "surge" forces Obama eventually approved, the book quotes a U.S. official as saying.

A copy of the book by Washington Post correspondent Rajiv Chandrasekaran was obtained by The Associated Press. It will be released Tuesday.

A previously undisclosed Biden memo to Obama in November 2009 reflects his view that military commanders were asking Obama to take a leap by adding tens of thousands of forces whose role was poorly defined.

Although Biden's doubts have become well known, the new book details how Biden used a months-long White House review of the war to question the basic premise that the same "counterinsurgency" strategy that had apparently worked in Iraq could be applied to Afghanistan.

"I do not see how anyone who took part in our discussions could emerge without profound questions about the viability of counterinsurgency," Biden wrote to Obama. To work, the counterinsurgency or "COIN" doctrine requires military gains to be paired with advances in government services, a "credible" Afghan government and Afghan security services that can take over, Biden's memo said.

Although the U.S. military could accomplish any technical assignment related to the new strategy, such as sweeping insurgents from a village, "no one can tell you with conviction when, and even if, we can produce the flip sides of COIN," Biden wrote. He supported a buildup of 20,000, half the number requested by then-war commander Gen. Stanley McChrystal.

The memo echoed a secret message to Washington from then-U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry that had called Afghan President Hamid Karzai an unreliable partner for the proposed surge. Eikenberry, a former top Army general who had served in Afghanistan, said more forces would only delay the time when Afghans would take over responsibility for their own security.

The Eikenberry memo was leaked shortly after he sent it, and confirmed by U.S. officials. Biden was presumed to agree with it, but he stayed mum at the time.

Obama's compromise ? 30,000 additional forces and a deadline to begin bringing them home ? was intended to blunt the momentum of a resurgent Taliban insurgency without committing Obama to an open-ended war.

The classified CIA assessment found that Afghanistan was "trending to stalemate" in mid-2011, just ahead of the long-planned date when Obama would begin bringing the additional forces home.

Although many of Obama's advisers had also concluded that the surge strategy had not worked, a White House official is quoted as saying aides initially rebuffed the CIA analysis because it could undercut Obama's argument for withdrawing forces on schedule.

"We didn't want it," the official said.

NFL Players Golf for Inspiring Minds

Several former college football players and some current NFL stars were at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on Friday to help raise funds for Inspiring Minds.

The inaugural Inspiring Minds Celebrity Golf Outing included NFL players Mario Manningham (Warren Harding) of the San Francisco 49ers, who was a hero of this year's New York Giants Super Bowl victory, and A.J. Hawk of the Green Bay Packers.

Deryck Toles, Inspiring Minds' founder and executive director, is a former Penn State and Warren Harding standout.

Toles said he is honored that so many players chose to donate their time for his organization.

"We are very grateful and appreciative because they could be doing so many other things," said Toles. "They are busy, their life is crazy, they have practice, workouts and families, and they finally got off work and they spent a day, well two days, here with us. It also shows you that there are people in the NFL community that still have a heart for kids."

Since 2006, Inspiring Minds has helped inner city youth reach their goals and has provided them with resources to succeed in school. Today, Toles? vision has grown to offer after-school educational programs, college visits and financial workshops.

After Years Of Outsourcing, Small U.S. Manufacturers Bring Jobs ...

Outsourcing is losing its allure.

Small U.S. manufacturers have been bringing manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. over the past two years after outsourcing, Bloomberg Businessweek reports. Experts say this is because U.S. manufacturing has steadily become more competitive, and coordinating with foreign manufacturers an ocean away is inconvenient.

Jerry Anderson, co-founder of LightSaver Technologies, told Bloomberg Businessweek that the company recently decided to move their manufacturing work from China to California because outsourcing had been a hassle, even though it had been 30 percent cheaper. "Factor in shipping and all the other B.S. that you have to endure. It's a question of, 'How do I value my time at three in the morning when I have to talk to China?'" he told Bloomberg Businessweek.

Booming developing countries in Asia have succeeded in raking in manufacturing jobs, both because of lower wages and factory clusters. But as wages rise for manufacturing workers in China and elsewhere in Asia, outsourcing is becoming less attractive to some U.S. businesses.

Meanwhile, new U.S. manufacturing hires have been forced to accept substantially lower wages because the recession has thrown so many people out of work. The U.S. still has about 2 million fewer manufacturing jobs than it had before the recession, according to Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. As a result, U.S. manufacturing jobs are coming back, but with lower pay.

Small businesses will play a key role in helping determine whether manufacturing rebounds strongly in the U.S., The Huffington Post reported in February.

China is still attractive when it comes to short-term costs: Manufacturing workers in the U.S. were paid an average $19.18 per hour at the end of 2011, compared to roughly $2.18 per hour in China. But building manufacturing roots in the U.S. may prove more valuable to small businesses over the long run: Productivity in the U.S. has spiked, and wages in China grew 11 to 14 times more quickly than U.S. wages between December 2010 and December 2011.

How We Picked The Floor For Our Busy Home - Home Improvement ...

Posted by idhar on Jun 21, 2012 in Home Products & Services |

If your house is anything like mine, your floor is prone to take a beating. Between a couple of adults and a handful of kids and animals our old carpet was starting to look like something out of a horror movie. Finally there was just one spill too many and I decided it was absolutely time to replace the flooring throughout the whole house. At first I didn?t know what kind of flooring I wanted to go with. All I knew was I wanted something affordable, because we didn?t have a very large budget to do this project with, and durable enough to stand up to everything that was going to stomp over it after it was installed.

One of the first things I considered was cheap hardwood flooring. Most of it was quite affordably priced, and it had a good reputation for being dent and wear resistant. It came in a range of nice colors, and quite a few of the brands came with a 10 or 25 year warranty depending on the thickness. The other option I considered was the cheap bamboo flooring I found. Cork is a highly resilient flooring material and I liked how it looked. It is usually quite a bit more expensive than the laminate but the discounted stuff was an option we could afford.
I spent a couple of weeks debating between the cheap hardwood flooring and the cheap bamboo flooring. The laminate flooring cost a good bit less than the cork even with it being discounted which was attractive since we didn?t have a whole lot to spend and we could have used the excess for some other projects. In the end however, I decided to go with the cork. It just seemed more durable and I really liked how the showroom sample looked. We have had it in the house for about six months now and so far it has held up as well as I was hoping it would. I love how it looks in the house and it is much easier to keep clean than the carpet ever was.

Google Maps Coordinate keep tabs on your team, dish the work out fairly video

If you're a mobile / field worker, and are tired of getting hauled across town to jobs, when there are others nearer by, you might want to point your senior in the direction of Google Maps Coordinate. Sounding like a blend of Latitude, Maps and Google + (Circles,) it's a web tool and mobile app that should help central operations organize their teams out in the field. Of course there's the usual location sharing, plus options for recording and collecting (user defined) data, allocating staff to teams or groups, job and task allocation plus history for analytics. Google says any business can sign up (currently $15 per employee,) plus there's an API if the stock options don't fit your custom needs. Either way, you can kiss goodbye to those two-hour secret lunchtime golf sessions.
