W H Y ? A New Public Health Issue? | HealthWorks Collective

?

Sandy Hook Elementary School???????????????? Columbine High School

WHY ?

A new and dangerous public health threat has emerged in North America. As yet it is not known how the disease spreads. Outbreaks have been rare, but in the more recent two decades it has taken close to 100 lives in the U.S alone.

It kills swiftly but is not uniformly fatal. It leaves a trail of heartbreak and never ending questions? Those not killed by it's outbreak ask could we have been immunized against it? How can we find a cure or a treatment ?

What are we writing about here? Mass murders in schools, and public places.

Among the questions asked are;

Can it be predicted and/or prevented?

Why has it become more prevalent?

What are the risk factors?

Is there something wrong with our mental health systems?

Prediction of these events has been a total failure. Forensic psychologists and psychiatrists have elaborated on several personality traits in persons who commit these crimes. They caution however that these traits do not necessarily point to violent behavior.

There may be an explanation (or several) for it's increase in prevalence.

Questions 2 and 4 may be related.

?

The development of effective anti-psychotic and other psychotropic drugs to control unacceptable behavior, psychosis, anxiety and depression initiated a paradigm shift in the treatment of mental illness. Prior to 1980 severely and chronically emotionally disturbed people were admitted to either short term or long term psychiatric institutions. Most hospitals had a mental health ward that was secure and locked down. Some were smaller private residential facilities, but the vast majority were large state and/or federally administered facilities.

The institutions were expensive to maintain, and in the new era of 'effective' drugs to control aberrant behavior, it was deemed possible to treat more emotionally disturbed people as outpatients once their acute symptoms were controlled. The number of patients needing to be admitted both for short term or long term hospitalization decreased dramatically and gradually most of these in patient facilities closed or were downsized significantly. The ability to admit patients became more difficult.

The stigma of mental illness remains high. People are fearful of what they do not understand. While it is now better understood what causes emotional aberrations, (a chemical imbalance of the brain), only now has neuroscience been able to study the metabolic activity of the brain using metabolic scans coupled with MRI imaging.

Early studies reveal portions of the brain that 'light up? in emotional and/or physical activity. Studies are in the early phases of identifying behavior with localized activity. As research progresses it is hoped that more specific illnesses will be identified by brain scans.

Will this evolve into predictability of violence or other maladaptation's to human behavior? Will it become a routine screening test for some personality types? Perhaps the hope may be we can screen for these serious and fatal diseases much like we do now for cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease, trisomy 21 and other what we know now to be genetically identifiable at early stages.

We must be hopeful.

This particular Sunday most people are thinking, wondering why, also praying for the survivors and the tragic outcome for families, friends and our community.

WWC: Eddie's Story

A Note From The Author: I wrote this story not o ly to submit in this contest, but to send a message across. People focus so much on how bullying leads to suicide and only affects the friends and family of the victim, but in reality it affects so much more. Whether this wins or not, please take the message in. This story is a pure work of fiction, and if it resembles any sort of situation, I must say that I did not get the idea from there. And the reason I don't describe any characters is so that you can see who pops into your mind as you read this, so that it is more relatable. Please, enjoy.

Eddie's Story

Thud, thud, thud.

My heart was pounding in my chest. I had no idea how I could still hear his voice over the sound of it.

"Do you see what happens when you mess with me now?!"

Click.

The girl in his arms with the gun held to her head screamed and he jerked her to the side, silencing her scream to a whimper.

"Shut up! You did this to yourself! You're getting what's coming to you!"

It was about then that I made a pretty idiotic decision. But I guess I should go back to the beginning and let you in on what's exactly is going on. Wouldn't want you to take everything out of context here. It's only fair that I tell the whole story, so that no one else is done any further injustice. And let me tell you, there is a lot of fucked up shit that goes on in this story. I don't suggest that the weak hearted read this. After all, it is a pretty tragic story. But I'm getting ahead of myself again. Now, where to begin?

I think I know a pretty good place. I guess it all really started at the beginning of the second quarter, when Eddie first moved over here and started coming to our school. He was one of those kids that you could tell was awkward the moment he stepped into the room. Not trying to be mean or anything, just stating honest facts. He was in my homeroom, geometry, so I got to be his guide for the day. I have to admit, at first I was really bummed about the whole thing. Then I realized that I hadn't even given this kid a chance, so I decided to rethink the whole thing. I was determined not to be like the other assholes in school that just automatically make fun of the new kid.

So anyways, there I was, guiding Eddie through his first day and giving him little tips where I could. Turns out, we had plenty in common. We shared a hatred for geometry, and a love for Pokemon. He was even in to all the old retro gaming systems that I was. And here I thought I would never find a nerd friend who quite understood me. We would talk for hours about the pros and cons of different systems, how the Dreamcast was better than all of the newer systems combined. Needless to say, our friendship grew pretty quickly, and I found out Eddie was a pretty cool kid. I also found out I was his only friend. As I suspected, all the other kids in my school shunned him for his general demeanor. It wasn't his fault that he seemed awkward from far away. But they still made fun of him for it, like I knew they would.

I always did my best to keep Eddie happy and keep him from really taking anything they said seriously. Usually, that worked for me pretty well. He always seemed to be able to brush their comments off his shoulder and remain the happy nerd that I knew him to be. He was always a pretty upbeat kid, and I always admired him for that. In a life that was so cruel to him and everyone else, he managed to keep a smile on his face. I always thought it was for his mother, who was raising him by herself since his father died in a construction accident. It was a terrible thing, I heard. They didn't talk about it much though, and I never asked. Figured that I should just let the dead lie where they were, especially in the heart of my new best friend and his mother.

School went on as normal for a while, until some kids decided that starting rumors would be super duper fun. And for once, I was actually the center of it. Well, Eddie and I shared the spotlight of the school gossip. People decided it would be funny to say that Eddie and I were a gay couple. Me, I could have cared less. Even if I were gay, I wouldn't let people turn that into a tool to bully me with. But Eddie on the other hand, took it kind of harshly. In fact, he got downright pissed about the whole situation. Poor guy started getting into fights over it. Naturally, he never won a single one of them and got his ass kicked. The popular kids always had back-up to start ganging up on him. I tried to help, but either I wasn't around, or I got beat too.

This is when things started to go awry for Eddie and I. See, he let his hatred for those spreading the rumors spread to pretty much everything. I noticed him getting darker and darker, retreating into himself more. He was acting out more, too. He kept getting grounded and started failing classes that I knew he was a genius in. I had no clue what was going on with him, or how he could let a rumor get to him this bad. Then I noticed that he was also distancing himself further and further from me.

That hurt me pretty bad, I'm not gonna lie. This was the first real friend that I had in a long time. Sure, I had other people to talk to and hang out with, but he was the only one that I could really relax around. Not to sound sappy or anything. And I knew for a fact that I was his only friend that wasn't on X-Box Live or some site. So, I was really confused by the fact that whenever I asked him to hang out, he flat out told me no. He avoided me in the halls, and in class. I had no idea what I had done to deserve this sort of treatment, so one day I decided to confront him.

The final bell had rung, and I knew exactly where his bus was. I sprinted out of my class to be sure that I would get there before him. There was no way he was going to avoid me this time. I wouldn't let him.

I looked all through the crowd of people for him, becoming pretty impatient. Finally, I saw him striding toward me unknowingly. He was looking at his feet as he walked, and I could see that his body was tense as he attempted to walk past unnoticed. It didn't really work, because there were still people that called things out to him. But, he just kept walking. Right into me. He looked up, somewhat startled, and then his eyes became cold and hard.

"What the hell do you want?" He said to me, his voice bitter and dripping with acid. I felt the shock and pain on my face at his tone of voice, but it seemed to stir nothing from him. No sympathy, nothing. My friend was gone.

"What do I want? I want to know what the hell happened to my friend! Why do you keep avoiding me like I have mono?!" We were starting to draw a crowd, and Eddie narrowed his eyes at me.

"You want to know why?" He spit the words through his teeth, his voice a growl. "Because all of this is your fault. If you hadn't come around and fucked up my life, no one would be saying I was gay and I wouldn't be getting my ass kicked on a regular basis." His voice got louder and louder with each word, and the crowd around us kept growing. They were even starting to egg us on, but I tuned them out.

"You can't blame me for the things all these assholes did! It isn't my fault these 'peers' of ours find it funny to torment kids! And it's your own damn fault that you get into fights." I realized that I was letting my temper get the better of me, and I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. When I opened my eyes again, I was somewhat calmer. "If you want to blame me, fine, nothing I say is going to stop you. But when, and if, you're ready to be rational and civilized, then you know where to find me." As I walked away from him I heard lots of booing and yelling behind me, the voices of the other kids begging for a fight. But I wasn't about to fight him. He was still my best friend in my eyes.

After that, I didn't hear from Eddie in weeks. I tried talking to him, but he avoided me even more now, and he somehow turned his mother against me too. I pretty much faded into the background again, not really getting any unwanted attention from my fellow classmates anymore. I wish I could say the same for my old friend. Things only got worse for him. He was skipping classes, and when he did show up, I saw various bruised and cuts on him from the fights he had gotten in. He was getting suspended and failing all his classes.

Just when I thought things couldn't get worse for him, it did. But I was around to see it this time. See, I had been going to my next class and I saw him talking to this girl. She was the queen bitch of our school, but I had no clue what her name was. I had a few classes with her, but I didn't like to associate with her. Suddenly, I heard her laugh loudly and people started to gather.

"You think I'd go out with you? You have to be kidding me!" She laughed again coldly, and her little band of followers, who I didn't see before, laughed along with her. "Besides, don't you like men, Eddie-boy?" With that, she laughed and walked away from him. I saw him clench and unclench his fists, and I walked over and put my hand on his shoulder.

"Hey man, you o-"

"Get the fuck away from me!" He shouted, turning and punching me right in the eye. Luckily for him, a teacher was nowhere in sight. I just held my eye and walked away from him while he called after me, yelling various different derogatory names. I didn't look back.

I stopped looking for Eddie. I stopped trying to talk to him. It was obviously a lost cause to try, because he wasn't going to turn back and ask for forgiveness. Not when all he seemed to do is get worse. Not to say I stopped caring, I just stopped going out of my way to check up on him. That was probably one of the biggest mistakes I could have made. Maybe if I had kept trying, none of this would have happened. But, I was just being stupid.

School had been normal again. I sat in class and tolerated all my teachers and worked hard. I remember being shocked that Eddie had bothered coming to geometry at all after about a month of just not being there. I guess I should have taken it as an omen, but I just shrugged it off. Regardless, what happened next shocked us all.

As the teacher was turned around, writing notes on the board, Eddie started to reach into his bookbag. I saw the glint of black metal, but before I could do anything, Eddie had held the gun up and shot our teacher in the back twice. Before anyone had the chance to scream, he turned and shot a few of the more popular people. It was then that the screams started and Eddie felt safe enough to grab the teacher's keys and be sure the door was locked, then decided to push her desk against the door. After that, he grabbed the queen bitch and held her like you always see the bad guy holding the hostage in movies.

"Everyone shut the fuck up and get on the ground! Get away from your stuff, or I'll shoot her!" I was in pretty much a state of shock, and complied with what he said as my heart began to beat hard in my chest. "All I've gotten is a rash of shit from everyone, and I'm tired of it! You'll all listen to me now! None of you will make fun of me now!" He laughed, a sound that was so chilling and deranged that it sent a shiver of fear down my spine. "It's all your fault that they all had to die!" Eddie yelled to the room full of teens.

"Do you see what happens when you mess with me now?!"

Click.

He had cocked the gun again, and it was ready to shoot. The queen bitch squirmed and whimpered in his arms a bit, and that agitated Eddie. "Shut up! You did this to yourself! You're getting what's coming to you!" Like I said before, this is about the time that I made the biggest mistake of my life.

Adrenaline pumping through my veins, I got up and tackled them both to the ground, and the girl got loose and managed to run away. Unfortunately for me, Eddie also still had the gun. I tried to wrestle it out of his grasp, but he had a damn strong grip. Something went wrong in the struggle though. All I heard was a bang, and everything went black.

Did I mention that it was also my last decision?

Yes, I'm dead. I have been for a bit. Shortly after I died, I could see again, but it was almost like a dream. Really, I was just being released from my body. I got up and looked around, seeing myself on the ground with a bullet hole in my head. I also saw the queen bitch, lying on the ground and bleeding from her stomach. I guess my last efforts were pointless. Lastly, I saw my friend on the ground near me, sobbing. I watched as he whispered his apologies to my corpse, and put the gun in his mouth. I listened to the final bang that determined the end of Eddie's life.

Of course, the surviving kids moved the desk and unlocked the door, allowing those who were waiting outside to try and save us all, but were too late. The police and ambulance showed up and carted the bodies off. I believe I heard them say that there were a couple of people that were still alive, but hardly. There was a lot of sobbing among the crowd, and lots of shock and commotion.

Eventually, everyone's parents were informed. I visited my own parents and sister first, and tried to communicate, but they couldn't feel or hear me. They were all so very upset and hurt because of my death. I watched as my mother slipped into a depression and my father became distant. My poor little sister, I don't even know how badly this is going to impact her life. I just hope that she'll pull through and be stronger than before, I don't want this to break her.

I also visited Eddie's mother. I honestly don't know which visit broke my heart more, the one to her or my family. She had lost her husband and her son now. She was all alone. Not only that, but everyone saw her son as a monster. Really, Eddie wasn't a monster. The blame isn't all on him in this situation. I hate that I'm not there to defend him in his death.

What happened is just as much the fault of the people that bullied Eddie as it is his, and mine as well. He never would have done it if he hadn't been pushed to the edge. And he wouldn't have done it if he had a stronger support system to help him through it all. Yeah, I know what you're thinking. "He was the one to bring the gun and shoot everyone, he didn't have to." I know that. You know that. Hell, everyone knows that. Doesn't change the fact that he isn't the only one to blame.

Ever since then, I've been in this sort of limbo. I don't know if there is anything past this, heaven, Nirvana, whatever you believe in. I have no idea if this is it or if there is something more. But I had to tell Eddie's story, whether anyone listened or not. I needed to show people that bullying someone doesn't just affect the person. It affects everyone around them.

Now that I've gotten it all out, maybe I can move on. Who knows. I guess I'll find out eventually.

Staffers hailed as heroes after Conn. shooting

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? A worker who turned on the intercom, alerting others in the building that something was very wrong. A custodian who risked his life by running through the halls warning of danger. A clerk who led 18 children on their hands and knees to safety, then gave them paper and crayons to keep them calm and quiet.

Out of the ruins of families that lost a precious child, sister or mother, out of a tight-knit town roiling with grief, glows one bright spot: the stories of staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School who may have prevented further carnage through selfless actions and smart snap judgments.

District Superintendent Janet Robinson noted "incredible acts of heroism" that "ultimately saved so many lives."

"The teachers were really, really focused on their students," she told reporters Saturday.

Some of them made the ultimate sacrifice.

After gunman Adam Lanza broke through the school door, gun blazing, school psychologist Mary Sherlach and principal Dawn Hochsprung ran toward him, Robinson said. Hochsprung died while lunging at the gunman, officials said.

The 56-year-old Sherlach, who would have been tasked with helping survivors cope with the tragedy, died doing what she loved, her son-in-law, Eric Schwartz, told the South Jersey Times.

"Mary felt like she was doing God's work," he said, "working with the children."

Just this past October, Hochsprung had tweeted a picture of the school's evacuation drill with the message "Safety first."

Victoria Soto, a 27-year-old teacher, reportedly hid some students in a bathroom or closet and died trying to shield them from bullets, a cousin, Jim Wiltsie, told ABC News. Those who knew Soto said they weren't surprised.

"You have a teacher who cared more about her students than herself," said John Harkins, mayor of Stratford, Soto's hometown. "That speaks volumes to her character, and her commitment and dedication."

In other cases, staffers both saved students and managed to escape with their own lives.

Teacher Theodore Varga said that as gunfire echoed through the school, a custodian ran around, warning people. He appears to have survived; all the adults killed were women.

"He said, 'Guys! Get down! Hide!'" Varga said. "So he was actually a hero."

Someone switched on the intercom, alerting people in the building to the attack by letting them hear the chaos in the school office, a teacher said. Teachers locked their doors and ordered children to huddle in a corner or hide in closets as shots echoed through the building.

In a classroom, teacher Kaitlin Roig barricaded her 15 students into a tiny bathroom, pulled a bookshelf across the door and locked it. She told the kids to be "absolutely quiet."

"I said, 'There are bad guys out there now. We need to wait for the good guys,'" she told ABC News.

One student claimed to know karate. "It's OK. I'll lead the way out," the student said.

Clerk Maryann Jacob was working with a group of 18 fourth-graders in the library when the shooting broke out. She herded the children into a classroom in the library, but then realized the door wouldn't lock.

They crawled across the room into a storage space, locked the door and barricaded it with a filing cabinet. There happened to be materials for coloring, she said, "so we set them up with paper and crayons."

One person who wasn't in the school at all also is getting props for his grace: Robbie Parker, whose daughter Emilie died.

Speaking to reporters Saturday, he said he was not mad and offered sympathy for Lanza's family.

"I can't imagine," he said, "how hard this experience must be for you."

At least 27 dead, mostly children, in Conn. school shooting

More than two dozen people, mostly elementary school children, were shot and killed at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school this morning, federal and state sources tell ABC News.

The massacre involved two gunmen at a Connecticut school this morning, prompting the town of Newtown to lock down all of its schools and draw SWAT teams to the school, authorities said today.

State Police confirm that one shooter is dead. A second gunman is apparently at large. Car-to-car searches are underway.

It's unclear how many people have been shot, but 25 people, mostly children are dead, multiple federal and state sources tell ABC News. That number could rise, officials said.

It is the worst shooting in a U.S. elementary school in recent memory.

The shooting comes just three days after masked gunman Jacob Roberts opened fire in a busy Portland, Ore., mall killing two before turning the gun on himself.

Today's shooting occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, about 12 miles east of Danbury.

State Police received the first 911 call at 9:41a.m. and immediately began sending emergency units from the western part of the state. Initial 911 calls stated that multiple students were trapped in a classroom, possibly with a gunman, according to a Connecticut State Police source.

A photo from the scene shows a line of distressed children being led out of the school.

While some students have been reunited with their parents on the school's perimeter, one group of students remains unaccounted for, according to a source with a child in the school.

Three patients have been taken to Danbury Hospital, which is also on lockdown, according to the hospital's Facebook page.

"Out of abundance of caution and not because of any direct threat Danbury Hospital is under lockdown," the statement said. "This allows us simply to focus on the important work at hand."

Newtown Public School District secretary of superintendent Kathy June said in a statement that the district's school were locked down because of the report of a shooting. "The district is taking preventive measures by putting all schools in lockdown until we ensure the safety of all students and staff."

State police sent SWAT team units to Newtown.

All public and private schools in the town are on lockdown.

"We have increased our police presence at all Danbury Public Schools due to the events in Newtown. Pray for the victims," Newtown Mayor Boughton tweeted.

State emergency management officials said ambulances and other units were also en route and staging near the school.

A message on the school district website says that all afternoon kindergarten is cancelled today and there will be no mid-day bus runs.

Ending fiscal uncertainty would boost economy: Lockheed CEO

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is poised for strong economic growth if political leaders can just move the nation beyond the current "debilitating" budget uncertainty, the chief executive and chairman of Lockheed Martin Corp said on Thursday.

"I see an enormous opportunity for the country to step forward with a more positive growth agenda if we can get resolution for these policy issues," Robert Stevens said, citing promising trends in manufacturing, housing, the energy sector and even consumer sentiment.

Stevens and Marillyn Hewson, Lockheed's president and chief operating officer, spoke with Reuters in wide-ranging interview that also touched on the company's drive to pump up foreign arms sales at a time that U.S. military spending looks set to flatten after a decade of growth.

"Getting a resolution for the fiscal cliff issues takes away a huge amount of uncertainty," said Stevens, who will retire at the end of this month as CEO of Lockheed, the biggest U.S. weapons maker.

He called for a balanced solution that included spending cuts, comprehensive tax reform and additional revenue, but said Washington also needed to tackle immigration reform and the nation's troubled educational system.

Lockheed, which reported revenue of $46.5 billion last year, is the prime contractor for the Pentagon's biggest weapons program, the $396 billion F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. It also builds F-16 fighter jets, a broad array of missile defense systems and a new class of coastal warships.

Stevens said his company and others were upbeat about America's future but were holding back on investment, hiring and acquisitions because of what he called "compounding uncertainties" about future tax rates and U.S. budget levels.

"If you could create the climate to unlock some of that liquidity you'd see ... stimulative effect from the business community moving forward," he said.

Stevens and other defense industry executives have been speaking out for the past year against automatic, across-the-board budget cuts that would strip $500 billion from projected Pentagon spending levels over the next decade, on top of $487 billion in cuts already scheduled for that period.

He said some further reductions in defense spending may be necessary but that the Pentagon should be allowed to determine which accounts to trim, rather than face the indiscriminate cuts that are now slated to go into effect on January 2 under the process known as "sequestration."

Stevens called those cuts "a very blunt instrument" that would result in broken contracts and layoffs, while undermining U.S. national security and global cooperation agreements.

The budget cuts, together with steep tax increases, are popularly known as the "fiscal cliff."

A Business Roundtable survey published Wednesday showed U.S. chief executives' view of the domestic economy hit a three-year low in the fourth quarter, with fiscal cliff concerns holding back decisions on hiring and capital spending.

Stevens said the automatic budget cuts could lead to furloughs of air traffic controllers, FBI agents and border patrol officers in addition to military program cuts, although it now appeared clear that main impact would not be felt for 90 days or longer - more a slope than a cliff.

Stevens and Hewson, who will succeed Stevens as CEO on January 1, declined to predict whether Congress and President Barack Obama would reach an agreement before the end of the year.

Shares of Lockheed and other arms makers on Thursday fell amid growing concerns that Congress and the White House will not reach a deal before year end. Lockheed shares closed down $1.82, or 2 percent, at $89.99 in trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Hewson said Lockheed had been preparing for a downturn in U.S. defense spending for the past three years by cutting its workforce from more than 146,000 to around 120,000, streamlining operations, and eliminating 2 million square feet of facilities, with 2.9 million more square feet to be cut by the end of 2014.

She said the company had been "very proactive" in cutting overhead costs, while investing in new materials and processes to reduce the cost of weapons systems, and that would continue.

"Whether there is or is not sequestration, affordability will be a constant theme. We have to get more out of the investments to ensure our security," Stevens added.

He said the Pentagon and its suppliers faced particular challenges in the current budget environment given the long-term nature of developing and buying weapons systems such as the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, warships and missile defense equipment.

"Our product cycles, our service cycles, our levels of commitment, they go out decades," Stevens said. "We're here today a business that has decades in our planning horizon and a visibility of less than 20 days because in 20 days we don't know if sequestration is going to take place or not."

Hewson said Lockheed, which is also the largest information technology provider for the U.S. government, was poised for continued modest growth despite the difficult environment, citing good prospects for future foreign arms sales and growth in areas such as cyber, space and healthcare IT.

"We do see continued growth," she said, although the trajectory would not equal that since the September 11, 2001, hijacking attacks.

What Is MTV's Best Movie Of 2012?

In a year with so many really good movies, picking a top five proved a harder challenge than most other looks back. When the writers at MTV got together to narrow the field down, some expected and some not-so-expected films came to the front. After much discussion, voting, tallying, and order switching, these are the [...]

This Week's Visual Art: Dec 13-16: Gallery Openings, News ...

Artist talk with Richard Patterson and Shaun ?El C?Leonardo + closing reception for The Art Foundation?s exhibition twain at Grey Matters Gallery ? December 13: 6-8:30 p.m. 113 N. Haskell Ave. Dallas, TX, 75226.

Twain, the latest project by The Art Foundation, brings together a collection of artists operating under alter-egos, pseudonyms, or assumed names, which creates a show that is full of tension, primarily involving the relationship between authorship and meaning. Work here includes absurdist sculpture, found and ?activated? objects, video, text, and photography, and all of it takes the ground out from under the viewer with roguish plays off title cards, exterior fictions that inform the objects, and a recurring challenge to the idea that a work of art stands on its own. It is a show not merely driven by ideas, but, by curatorial design, tries to subvert role of biography and product in the conception of the art object. By doing so, twain back-handedly provides these aspects of the art object with a kind of screaming presence.

All of this (and likely much more) will be discussed this evening with Richard Patterson, an artist whose work is included in the exhibition under two alter-egos, as well as Shaun El C. Leonardo, whose work isn?t in the show, but whose assumed persona-driven performance pieces offer an interesting take on the role of the alter-ego in artistic practice. I?ll be moderating, and given the artists involved, I use that word ?moderation? very loosely. I expect my role to be something closer to bull rider.

As an intro to Leonardo, here is a feature from PS1?s Studio Visit series.

NEXT TOPIC: CentralTrak Talk Series with ?Co- Re-Creating Spaces? curators and artist at CentralTrak ? December 13: 7 p.m. 800 Exposition Ave., Dallas, TX 75226.

There?s a bit of a conversational conflict tonight, unfortunately, with the twain panel mentioned above overlapping with this gallery talk that includes the curators and artists involved in another interesting exhibition currently up in Dallas, ?Co Re-Creating Spaces.? The panel promises to discuss the exhibition as well as larger questions raised by the exhibition regarding systems and spaces and the role of the artist in the conceptualization, creation, and re-creation of space. The panel will include: ?Morehshin Allahyari, Kristen Cochran, Cassandra Emswiler, Greg Metz, Karen Weiner, and Michael Corris, together with curators Carolyn Sortor and Mike Morris, moderated by Mona Kasra.

?F@#K Brain Cancer ? Special Exhibition and Silent Auction Fundraiser for Patrick Short? by Anne Albagli, Lynne Allen, Jesse Morgan Barnett, Jennifer Caine, Dana Clancy, Kristen Cochran, Hannah Cole, Deborah Cornell, Matthew Cusick, Gabriel Dawe, Erika Duque, Carolina Duque, Sarah Edwards, Cassandra Emswiler, Gary Farrelly, Leah Foster, Michael Garguilo, Joshua Goode, Jill Grimes, Monica Gunderson, Rachel Hellman, Elizabeth Livingston, Lindsay McCulloch, Lydia Musco, Dushko Petrovich, Teresa Rafidi, Harold Reddicliffe, Richard Raiselis, Ryder Richards, Richard Ryan, Lucia Simek, Lisa Townley, Andrew Douglas Underwood, Bartek Walicki, and Andrew Wick, at Ro2 Art Downtown Projects ? December 14: 7-9 p.m.?110 North Akard, Dallas, Tx 75202.

For those who?aren?t?familiar with Patrick Short, the artist was the driving force behind Guerilla Arts, an artist-run exhibition space that lived in a dinged up building on Haskell for a brief time in 2010. We named that space best new gallery in 2011, right as it shuttered (here?s Joshua Goode?s obit).

At the time, the success and failures of the Guerilla Arts space prompted a variety of conversations about the need for a more deliberate effort on the part of artists to show their own work and create their own ?scene.? This may seem like an intuitive role for artists, but in Dallas, as Creative Time observed, it was (and is) still an uphill battle. Since the folding of Guerilla Arts, we have seen an increased number of pop-up shows, artist run spaces, and other such efforts, and in a way, this latest surge in homespun art activity can trace its way back through Short?s space, directly or indirectly, consciously or not.

Short was diagnosed with brain cancer earlier this year, a sudden and staggering shock to those who knew him. Joshua Goode has helped organize this fundraiser show at Ro2, which will raise money for Short?s continued battle with the disease. The strong group of artists who have submitted work to the exhibition is a worthy tribute.

?WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS? by Favio Moreno, at The Public Trust ? December 15 : 6-9 p.m.?2919-C Commerce Street, Dallas, Tx 75226.

The Bodega Negra?s Favio Moreno has his first solo exhibition at Brian Gibbs gallery. Moreno?s vibrant and colorful paintings possess a strong graphic sensibility that blends a subversive mix of religious iconography and street sensibility, forcing themes of life and death and ecstasy to the surface. In The Public Trust?s small front room, graffiti collective Sour Grapes has been given carte blanche to turn the gallery?s shop into a Sour Grapes store, and they will be selling prints, t-shirts, zines, stickers, buttons, pinatas, and more.

Redskins' RG3 practices, feeling 'really good'

(AP) ? Three days after spraining his knee, Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was just a little gimpy on the practice field and very cagey behind the microphone

He likes his chances of playing Sunday, but he and coach Mike Shanahan want to keep the Cleveland Browns guessing as long as possible.

Wearing his No. 10 jersey and a black knee brace underneath his sweatpants on a chilly day, Griffin high-stepped and moved laterally with barely a hitch as he stretched, then favored his right leg during throwing drills as the Redskins began on-field preparations for this week's game.

"Sunday night, I thought there was probably no chance that I could play the next week," Griffin said. "And then Monday morning, I felt better about it. Yesterday, I felt better about it. And today I feel really good about it, so it just depends on if I continue to progress the way I am."

So, to cut to the case, Griffin was asked if he expects to play Sunday.

"I can't tell you all that," he answered. "First, I don't want to give the Cleveland Browns a competitive advantage. And I don't want to let anybody down, so I don't want to say that I'll be playing and end up not playing."

Griffin has a mild sprain of the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee, a favorable diagnosis considering the scary hit to his leg from defensive tackle Haloti Ngata at the end of a scramble late in regulation in Washington's 31-28 overtime victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

"I was the happiest guy in the world on Monday to be blessed with the injury that I did have," Griffin said, "after looking at it so many times."

Still, the Redskins (7-6), who have won four straight to move within a game of the first-place New York Giants in the NFC East, are trying their best to keep Griffin's status shrouded in mystery. They closed practice to the media after 20 minutes, in compliance with NFL rules. And even Griffin ? who at one point waved to reporters watching his every move ? admitted that there was a public relations aspect to his participation.

"Coming out here and doing what I did in practice, it's kind of a showcase for you guys to see me move around, and that I'm not on crutches or limping or anything like that," Griffin said. "But it's also for (my teammates) to see that I'm OK, and if I do step out there between those lines that they don't have to worry about me."

Griffin was officially listed as "limited" in practice, and neither he nor backup Kirk Cousins would say who took most of the work with the starting offense.

"I was advised not to comment on the rep distribution," Cousins said. "So I'm sorry, but I'm not going to say anything along those lines, just to protect my team and give us the best chance to win on Sunday."

Shanahan was also naturally vague about his No. 2 overall draft pick.

"I was impressed with how he worked and what he did," the coach said. "We'll see at the end of the week if he's full-speed and ready to go. And if he is, he'll play."

Shanahan was asked if he plans to string out the announcement as long as possible, even if he already knows who will start.

"Probably," he said with a smile. "Why did you ask that silly question?"

Griffin did offer some insight into the factors that will help determine whether he will play. He said he wants to be able to make "instinctive moves without thinking about it" and that he was able to accomplish that to some extent Wednesday.

Griffin also said planting and throwing is "not a problem" and that it has become much easier to walk up and down steps as the leg loosens up and the swelling goes down.

"If I can give the team the best chance to win, then I'll play," Griffin said. "And if I can ensure my safety out there and my health and my career, then I'll go out there and play. And if not, then I won't."

Cardozo Students Build House from the Ground Up

Contemporary Dwelling Showcases Students' Skills

Years from now, some of the students currently enrolled in the Academy of Construction and Design (ACAD) at Cardozo High School in Northwest, will be able to cruise by their old stomping ground, and point to a house that they actually built from the ground up.

For the first time in the history of the District, a single-family dwelling, conceived and designed by students has been erected in the Brightwood community at 5734 13thSt. ? a stone's throw away from Cardozo. For most of the one dozen students who participated, it took years of classroom assignments, working with licensed instructors and industry professionals to complete the contemporary three-story building. But when the ribbon was cut Dec. 6, they beamed with pride as the community walked through the house that the students built.

ACAD Director Shelly Karriem said the ribbon-cutting event had been a long time in the making.

"It didn't come without some trials and setbacks," said Karriem. "We had our share of obstacles, but we were bound and determined . . . it [has] been an experience of a lifetime," she said. "Our students really took ownership of this project, they made history. It's going to be an incredible thing for them and others in future generations to drive by and say, 'your mom or your dad helped build that house.'"

In jump-starting the project in 2010, the District's Department of Housing and Community Development donated the vacant lot to the nonprofit D.C. Students Construction Trades Foundation ? which works in partnership with District of Columbia Public Schools ? and provided the primary funding for the house's construction.

Bethesda-based Miller & Long Concrete Construction signed on as one of the mentor companies, and its chairman John McMahon, explained their involvement. In doing so, McMahon, 72, recalled how the business sector had been criticized for years for not hiring District residents.

"Eight years ago, we looked at the D.C. public school system, which had no practical vocational training or programs for students," McMahon said in reference to ACAD's formation. "We believed the unemployment problem [was related to] the school system, because so many students were graduating with no pragmatic skills."

McMahon, who enrolled in vocational classes at Woodrow Wilson High School in Northwest, where he is a graduate, said he and others at Miller & Long realized that many of their peers in the construction trade launched their careers based on vocational training.

"We decided that students in District public schools should have the same opportunities, and we created the academy at Cardozo," he said. As ACAD evolved, he said they looked at a similar program in the Montgomery County public schools system where the students had built a house. It wasn't long after, that ACAD's house construction program got underway. "This house is a good example of what kids can do ? and they're going to go out into the world knowing it can be done," McMahon said.

Almost every day during the school year from November 2010 until just a couple weeks ago, the students donned hard hats and safety gear, working on the house. From reading blueprints and ordering supplies, to pounding nails and toting beams ? the students did it all, with their efforts that resulted in a beautifully crafted, spacious single-family home that boasts three bedrooms and 3 ? baths.

While neither Karriem nor McMahon could provide a market-rate price, a realtor has already been selected to show the home.

The house, which features marble-top counters, stainless steel appliances, French doors and ceramic flooring in the kitchen, includes a dining area and basement laundry room. It's complemented throughout with hardwood or carpeted floors and ample natural lighting throughout the home.

Chester Broadway, 16, who enrolled at ACAD to become an electrician, said he learned a lot about wiring switches and outlets while working on the house. He added that he's still in awe of how light and airy the house appears.

"It was a fun experience to have been a part of the project and to see it through to completion," Chester said. "It's exciting to know that I was one of the students who helped build this house."

Starkeem Dixon, 14, agreed.

"At first I was thinking it wasn't going to be much fun when there was so much work to do," said Starkeem, whose lofty future plans include attending culinary school and building his own restaurant. "But it was a fun experience and I learned the value of [teamwork]. I loved working on this project and I'm looking forward to the next one."

Three killed in riots in southern Guinea

CONAKRY (Reuters) - At least three people died and several more were injured in clashes that broke out late on Monday in southern Guinea between opposition militants and government supporters, witnesses said.

The violence in the town of Gueckedou near the border with Liberia, around 700 km (420 miles) from the capital Conakry, followed days of protests against the town's military prefect, whom the opposition accuses of abuse of power.

A police official said vehicles carrying reinforcements of police, soldiers and gendarmes left Conakry on Tuesday and were on their way to Gueckedou to try to end the violence.

"The demonstrations and counter-demonstrations led to bloody clashes last night... These people were armed with machetes, clubs, sticks and other weapons. It was very violent," another senior police officer said, asking not to be named.

Government authorities said two people were killed during the night, and several others were injured. Witnesses said the death toll was higher after the clashes continued into Tuesday.

"I personally saw three bodies. But I was told there were at least five killed," Gueckedou resident Mohamed Barry told Reuters by telephone, adding that the violence had continued into the afternoon.

"The security forces intervened, shooting in the air and throwing teargas... The city is deserted. Everyone's gone home, afraid they'll get caught up in it," he said.

Gueckedou is the hometown and stronghold of support for Jean-Marc Telliano, who was sacked as agriculture minister by President Alpha Conde in October amid public accusations of corruption in the West African country.

Following his dismissal, Telliano joined the opposition and announced his intention to return home and help defeat Conde's ruling RPG party in the next legislative elections.

"I'll go to Gueckedou whether the prefect likes it or not. If he wants a new civil war in Gueckedou, he should stop me from going," Telliano said in a radio interview on November 28.

Conde was elected president of Guinea, the world's top supplier of the aluminum ore bauxite, in late 2010. The vote ended military rule but was tainted by deadly riots and opposition complaints of fraud.

His government has been trying to organize legislative elections, the last major step in a transition back to civilian rule and a prerequisite to unlock millions of dollars in frozen aid. But progress has been slowed by opposition worries that the electoral body is biased.

A Freelancers Journey, Part Two | Writing and Speaking Tips

Are we there yet?

Are we there yet?

Are we there yet?

Don?t make me turn this career around and go home.

I?ve only started on this journey and already it feels as though I?m ten years old on a trip up the California coast. Impatient for the destination.

What is the destination?

Every writer has the same destination in mind: Fame. Wealth. Validation. Security. Importance.

A side trip to Hollywood/Nobel Peace Prize/New York agents? office would be welcome too.

In a freelance career, you make many side trips.

Sometimes I feel as if this year?s Academy Award-nominated films (which depress me because I?m not nominated or even writer of a film that I could cheerfully say got snubbed) express the freelancer?s journey.

There?s ?Million Dollar Baby,? which echoes what we hope a producer/publisher will say: ?How about a million dollars, baby?? But in the story of a plucky female boxer (with Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood in her corner, yowza) who won?t give up and gets no respect (sort of like being published with PublishAmerica or iUniverse), we find a spark of determination.

There?s ?Kinsey,? which wasn?t a best picture nom but perfectily expresses the writer?s obsessive drive as well as the tendency to drive all our loved ones insane.

?The Aviator??ahhh. What freelance writer hasn?t locked themselves in a room with a big screen TV and not shaved for several days? And we all say, ?Don?t tell me we can?t do it. Don?t tell me it can?t be done.?

?Ray??we should all get on our knees and pray for a story like Ray Charles? life. The music is fabulous too, which means you can listen to the soundtrack over and over while writing. Don?t be afraid to set your own freelance standards, your own style, and your own assignments.

?Sideways??it?s the story of a writer who goes to the wine country and has a great affair with a beautiful person. That?s why we?re in this business.

?Finding Neverland.? Don?t forget to play and celebrate the power of the imagination.

While we?re at it, learning from these powerhouse emotional stories, let?s not forget to celebrate our fellow scribes? success. After all, we?ll get there someday.

We may even be there right now.

To be continued?the journey that is. Not the article series. Too many freelance leads!

Report: Roughly 20 Percent Of Pinterest?s Top 10 Users? Followers Were Spammers And Fake Accounts

pinterest-logo6Last week, Pinterest began curtailing the number of spammers and fake accounts on its system, in an effort to clear its platform off unwanted elements. At the time, the company noted that this latest big sweep would mainly affect those with larger follower counts, or those who had purchased fake followers. The majority (99 percent) of users would lose fewer than 10 followers, Pinterest said. Today, we have some figures on what those drops looked like, at least in terms of their affect on top Pinterest accounts.

Chart shows estimated average tax increase in

(AP) ? Debate over the "fiscal cliff" has money pouring into television, print, radio and online ads, picking up where the wall-to-wall election campaign left off.

As Republicans and the White House joust over a way around big year-end tax increases and spending cuts, outside groups on both sides are weighing in with major ad campaigns aimed at politicians and voters alike.

The latest is Crossroads GPS, the Karl Rove-backed conservative group last seen dropping more than $80 million on ads assailing President Barack Obama in his re-election campaign.

Its new $500,000 buy, announced Wednesday, has attributes familiar to viewers acquainted with the political attack-ad genre. It features dreary, dread-inducing music, foreboding narration and grainy footage. All that's changed is its aim. Instead of denying Obama re-election, the intent is to defeat his policy.

"So far, a huge tax increase is his solution," a narrator says, before imploring viewers to personally call the president.

If anything, Crossroads is slow to enter the fiscal cliff fray.

Within days of Obama's Nov. 6 victory over Republican Mitt Romney, outside groups were keying up ad campaigns designed to shape the fiscal debate. The range of participants ? from business interests opposing higher tax rates on the wealthy to unions that want to raise them and advocates for the elderly opposed to cutting benefits ? reflects the messy tangle of issues that Congress and the White House are dealing with.

In general, the ads are less sharp-edged than the most caustic 2012 election spots. In many cases, the intent is to bring pressure to bear on the whole of Congress, not just a particular member or group of members. But combined, the ads reflect the high stakes involved and intense competition to shape the outcome.

AARP, the 37-million-member group that lobbies for the elderly, is running ads nationally that home in on two key aspects of the debate: potential changes to Medicare and Social Security. They lambaste Washington politicians as a whole for even talking about Medicare and Social Security changes "behind closed doors."

In one of the TV ads, a narrator speaks as images of seniors hugging grandchildren, mulling drug choices at a pharmacy and looking forlornly at the camera flash across the screen. "We'll all pay the price" if hasty cuts are included in a year-end deal, the narrator says.

Labor unions that traditionally support Democrats are producing more explicitly political advertising. Three of them ? The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the Service Employees International Union and the National Education Association ? joined to buy TV and radio ads targeting specific lawmakers in both parties in Colorado, Missouri, Virginia, Alaska and Pennsylvania. The ads ask voters to call their senators and congressman and push for a deal that protects the "middle class."

"We shouldn't raise taxes on the middle class," the narrator says in one radio ad. "But if Congress fails to act soon, that's exactly what will happen."

Other ads hammer home the stakes of the debate, something all of the groups that have invested money in "cliff" ads seem to agree on.

An online ad from The Business Roundtable features a gloomy narrator making that case that Congress will be to blame for an economic slowdown and sharply higher taxes if no deal is made. It includes foggy images of two key players in the debate, Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

"If Congress does not act, growth will stall, jobs will be lost and our nation's credit will be harmed. If Congress does not act, America's entire economy will be put at risk," the narrator says over images of Reid, Boehner and the Capitol dome.
