Fossil study helps pinpoint extinction risks for ocean animals

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

What makes some ocean animals more prone to extinction than others? A new study of marine fossils provides a clue.

An analysis of roughly 500 million years of fossil data for marine invertebrates reveals that ocean animals with small geographic ranges have been consistently hard hit ? even when populations are large, the authors report.

The oceans represent more than 70% of the Earth's surface. But because monitoring data are harder to collect at sea than on land, we know surprisingly little about the conservation status of most marine animals. By using the fossil record to study how ocean extinctions occurred in the past, we may be better able to predict species' vulnerability in the future.

"If the patterns we observed in the fossil record hold for species living today, our results suggest that species with large populations but small ranges are at greater risk of extinction than we might have expected," said study co-author Paul Harnik of the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center.

Researchers have long assumed that rare animals are more likely to die out. But "rare" could mean multiple things.

The word "rare" could be applied to species that have restricted geographic ranges, or small populations, or that tolerate a narrow range of habitats, or any combination thereof, the authors say.

False killer whales, for example, are considered rare because they occur in small numbers, even though they're found in oceans throughout the world.

Erect-crested penguins, on the other hand, are considered rare because they're geographically restricted to remote islands off the coast of New Zealand ? even though they're fairly abundant where they occur.

Harnik and colleagues Jonathan Payne of Stanford University and Carl Simpson of the Museum f?r Naturkunde in Berlin wanted to know which aspects of rarity best predict why some species survive and others die out.

"It's only through the fossil record where we have a long-term record of extinction where we can really see whether those relationships hold up," Harnik said.

To find out, the team scoured a fossil database for marine invertebrates that inhabited the world's oceans from 500 million years ago to the present ? a dataset that included 6500 genera of sea urchins, sand dollars, corals, snails, clams, oysters, scallops, brachiopods and other animals.

When the researchers looked for links between extinction rate and measures of rarity, they found that the key predictor of extinction risk for ocean animals was small geographic range size.

Habitat breadth played a secondary role, whereas population size had little effect. The result: Ocean animals that both had small geographic ranges and tolerated a narrow suite of habitats were six times more likely to go extinct than common animals were.

"Environmental changes are unlikely to affect all areas equally, or all individuals at the same time in the same way. If something terrible happens to some part of a species' range, then at least some populations will still survive," Harnik explained.

Life in the sea was once thought to be less prone to extinction than life on land. But with global warming, overfishing, and ocean acidification pushing sea life to its limits, growing evidence suggests otherwise.

"The findings don't mean that when populations dwindle we shouldn't worry about them," Harnik said.

"But the take home message is that reductions in range size ? such as when a species' habitat is destroyed or degraded ? could mean a big increase in long-term extinction risk, even if population sizes in the remaining portions of the species' range are still relatively large."

The results will be published this week in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Mika Salo thinks Fernando Alonso still favourite for title ? Formula 1 news

Former Ferrari and Sauber driver, Mika Salo has said that Fernando Alonso is still one of the most favourite drivers in the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship.

Salo said that Alonso has performed tremendously well, in the season until now, even with the car which is not competitive enough relatively to his rivals.

Moreover, he said that the Spaniard has scored points with admirable consistency and has not made any mistakes as compared to his major opponent, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing who is presently leading the drivers? championship.

?There is a common perception among the drivers that Alonso will win the championship this year. Keep in mind that Ferrari was not competitive at the beginning of the year, but Alonso has led almost the entire way until now,? Salo said. ?He hasn?t made any mistakes throughout the year, which is different to Vettel.?

In addition, he said that Vettel has performed well in the races in which he has started from the front of the grid. Conversely, the 31-year-old has shown excellent pace in the season so far even starting from behind.

?Vettel gets the job done when he is driving alone at the front, but he is not as rational as Alonso in racing situations,? he said.

?Alonso on the other hand would prefer 18 points to none,? he added.

The defending champion has become very strong after claiming his third consecutive victory in the Korean Grand Prix and has a lead of 6 points over Alonso. However, it will be important to note that the Ex-F1 driver, Niki Lauda has said that Vettel has not yet won the title and anything can happen as there are still four races to go.

On the other hand, Romain Grosjean of Lotus has said that the 25-year-old is surely in a stronger position to win the championship and has become almost unbeatable now.

Red Bull and Ferrari are planning to come up stronger in the forthcoming races. It will be thrilling to see how the top two contenders perform in the remainder of the season and who takes the title in the end.

8 Preventive Health Care Services Women Can Get For Free 2 5 7

preventive health care services available free for women MonkeyBusiness Images/PhotoSpin

When a new provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), sometimes referred to as ?Obamacare? kicked in Aug. 1, 2012, about 47 million American women became eligible to receive additional preventative health care services without a co-payment or any patient cost sharing.

The eight free services are offered to privately insured women or Medicare recipients enrolling in new health insurance plans or renewing existing policies on or after Aug. 1, 2012.

ACA states any new private health plans obtained in plan years starting on or after Aug. 1, must cover the law?s guidelines on women?s preventive services with no cost sharing.

One big change is women can visit their OB/GYN physician without a referral. Insurance companies can no longer require a woman to obtain prior approval before seeking obstetrical and gynecological care.

Here?s a breakdown of the new services courtesy of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Well-woman Visits:

An annual well-woman preventative care visit for adult women to obtain the recommended preventive services, and any additional visits if women and their health care providers determine are necessary. These visits will help women and their health care providers determine what preventive services are appropriate, and set up an action plan to help women stay or get healthy.

HPV DNA Testing:

Women who are age 30 or older will have access to high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing every three years, regardless of their Pap smear results. Early screening, detection, and treatment have been shown to help reduce the prevalence of cervical cancer.

Gestational Diabetes Screening:

Women who are 24 to 28 weeks pregnant and those at high risk of developing gestational diabetes now have free access to this screening. It will help improve the health of mothers and babies because women who have gestational diabetes have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.

Savile victims allege paedophile ring existed at BBC

LONDON (Reuters) - A sex scandal gripping BBC deepened on Wednesday with claims that a paedophile ring had existed involving some of its stars, as its former director general said his handling of the case shouldn't stop him becoming the boss of the New York Times.

The BBC has been thrown into disarray by accusations it helped cover up sexual abuse by one of its most celebrated former presenters, Jimmy Savile, and has struggled to explain why one of its own shows killed an investigation into it.

The broadcaster's current Director General George Entwistle has been condemned for his handling of one of the worst crises in the corporation's 90-year history and questions have also been raised about his predecessor Mark Thompson, who is set to take over at the New York Times Co next month.

The government warned the BBC on Wednesday that the scandal was raising "very real concerns" about public trust.

"These allegations do leave many institutions, perhaps particularly the BBC, with serious questions to answer," Prime Minister David Cameron told parliament.

Police and the BBC, which is funded by the public through an annual licence fee, are looking into allegations that the eccentric, cigar-chomping Savile, who died last year, abused young girls over six decades.

Some of the attacks were alleged to have taken place on BBC premises.

Lawyers representing some of the male and female victims, some of whom were as young as eight when the abuse occurred, said their clients had indicated an organised paedophile ring involving other celebrities had existed at the BBC during the height of Savile's fame in the 1970s and 80s.

"There is information of a possible paedophile ring and we have people who have approached us with that information," Alicia Alinia, one of the lead lawyers involved in the cases for the Slater and Gordon law firm told Reuters.

"It seems to be a number of people who were involved other than Jimmy Savile, I can't reveal any specific names of celebrities involved, but it seems as though it wasn't just limited to unknowns."

Earlier, the BBC said new allegations had been made against nine current BBC staff or contributors since revelations about Savile were first broadcast by rival channel ITV.

These ranged from inappropriate language or behaviour to harassment and serious claims of sexual assault.

"Where appropriate action needs to be taken and people would need to be suspended, that will happen," a BBC spokeswoman said.

In a sign the scandal could spread further, lawmaker Tom Watson told parliament a senior aide to an unnamed former prime minister might have been involved in a suspected paedophile ring.

"I want to ensure that the Metropolitan Police secure the evidence, re-examine it, and investigate clear intelligence suggesting a powerful paedophile network linked to parliament and Number 10 (prime minister's office)," he said.

"REAL CONCERNS"

The developments come at a time when politicians are increasingly voicing disquiet about the BBC's broader management structure.

Culture Secretary Maria Miller wrote to the broadcaster's independent governing body to say "very real concerns are being raised about public trust and confidence in the BBC".

Lawmakers and the media heavily criticised Entwistle for his unconvincing appearance before parliament on Tuesday to answer questions over the scandal.

Thompson, his predecessor, is also facing scrutiny over his handling of the case. The public editor of the New York Times openly questioned whether the Briton was now fit to serve in his new role with such a scandal hanging over him.

"I do not believe there is anything that I've done in relation to this matter which should in anyway impinge on my abilities to fully discharge the responsibilities I'll have at the New York Times," Thompson told Reuters.

He said he was not briefed on the high-profile investigative programme that was looking into allegations against Savile, who hosted prime-time children's shows on the BBC, and that he was not involved in the decision to kill its report.

Entwistle, who replaced him as BBC director general in September, told hostile lawmakers on Tuesday that failures at the corporation had allowed Savile to prey on young girls, but he too denied he had helped suppress the report.

Damian Collins, a lawmaker from the ruling Conservative Party and a member of the parliamentary committee which questioned Entwistle, said it still wanted answers.

"I don't think the director general gave a very convincing performance yesterday and I think there were a lot of questions about the decisions he's taken," he told Reuters.

In reference to Thompson, who was director general when the decision was taken to drop the investigative Newsnight programme into the subject, he said:

"I find it extraordinary that the decision to close down the Jimmy Savile investigation could have been taken without the knowledge of the director general, who is the editor-in-chief, because this was not any run-of-the-mill investigation.

"It was one of the highest importance, involving some very grave criminal allegations about someone who had been a BBC employee for decades."

LFCHS tennis courts to be used by Little Falls Youth Hockey | The ...

Posted on October 24, 2012 at 8:16 am

By Tina Snell,?Staff Writer

Five Little Falls School Board members (Jay Spillum was not present) voted to permit the Little Falls Youth Hockey Association to use the high school tennis courts for a portable hockey arena.

The Little Falls Community High School (LFCHS) tennis courts are in such disrepair, they are unable to be used for competition purposes. While practice is still scheduled on the high school courts, competition is played on the courts at the Little Falls Community Middle School.

?I am not willing to spend the $250,000 it would cost to repair the courts at the high school,? said Little Falls School Board Member Brad Laager at the Monday night meeting.

Tom McQuillan from the Little Falls Youth Hockey Association told the Board his group is willing to rent the tennis court area, next to the Exchange Arena for $2,500 annually.

The Youth Hockey Association is proposing to modify the net posts so they may be removed during hockey season and repairing the lighting around the courts. It would install a large, locking gate to accommodate the Zamboni plus a locking gate for player access.

The cracks in the tennis court surface will be repaired and a heavy-duty hockey liner from Blue Lake Plastics will be laid to protect the tennis court surfaces.

Portable hockey boards will be erected and netting installed as required to keep pucks in the arena.

?The rent from the Hockey Association will help pay for the repairs ($30,000) to the middle school courts,? said Laager. ?This is the best use of our facilities.?

The ice arena will be available for open skating and school activities such as broomball.

?We (the Youth Hockey players) have to cram a lot of ice time into a short period (using only the Exchange Arena). This gives us more ice time,? said McQuillan. ?We will post practice schedules so people know when there is open ice time.?

Little Falls School Board briefs

Other business conducted by the Little Falls School Board Monday night included:

? Voting to temporarily add 1.5 elementary teachers for the Title I program for the remainder of the school year with money carried over from the Title I fund. The positions will be reviewed in the spring, along with Title I funding, regarding continuation or additional staffing changes;

? Learning the city of Randall said, ?No problem,? to reducing the speed limit to 20 miles per hour on Minnesota Avenue which runs along the front of Dr. S.G. Knight Elementary School;

? Approving the 2011-12 and 2012-15 confidential employees contracts;

? Passing a resolution to apply for a grant from the Minnesota State High School League to offset the costs of student activities fees and to help with the annual activities banquet. Activities Director Aaron Sinclair said the money available is split by the schools who apply and usually comes to an amount between $1,000 and $2,000;

? Voting to allow the annual District Fitness Challenge to spend $3,200 for gifts and prizes for four separate challenges, along with $1,000 for snacks. The money will come from the tobacco settlement which currently has a $40,000 balance;

? Approving the agreement with St. Francis for the district?s rental of classroom space for the CEC program and the use of the St. Francis Health and recreation Center gymnasium. The cost for the 2012-13 school year comes to $2,700 which did not increase from last year;

? Voting to sign the Assurance of Compliance with State and Federal Law Prohibiting Discrimination form;

? Voting to hire Kaia Flom as an ECFE teacher both Debra Yliniemi-Ahlin and Sally Heier as varsity co-head softball coaches and both Jean Repulski and Cindy Tenney as Early Childhood Family Education paraprofessionals;

? Accepting the resignations of Scott Endres as a teacher of students with learning disabilities at Lincoln Elementary School; Sarah Mueller as a cleaner at the high school, Jean Repulski as a transportation aide; and Victoria Wendland as a cook?s assistant at Lincoln Elementary School; and

? Accepting donations from Joyce Locks ($100) for the scholarship fund; city of Little Falls ($28,000) to the Youth Recreation Program; Kemps ?Nickels for Schools? ($92.95) to the Little Falls Community Middle School (LFCMS); Ride against Cancer ($8,000) to the scholarship fund; Zion Lutheran Women ($65) to Lincoln and Lindbergh elementary schools for the social work fund; Tractor Supply Company ($2,000 worth of hand tools) to the industrial technology department and Target ?Take Charge of Education? ($81.65) to the LFCMS.

The next School Board meeting will be held at the Morrison County Government Center Monday, Nov. 19, at 5:30 p.m.

Mayor Daryl Bennett to host city's first Twitter town hall next Monday

Peterborough residents will have an opportunity to Tweet Mayor Daryl Bennett as he takes to Twitter live during an online town hall meeting Monday morning.

In what the city is dubbing the first town hall meeting of its kind, Bennett will spend an hour answering questions about his two years in the mayor?s seat.

?In one hour, we will answer as many questions as we can. We can rattle off quite a few in that length of time,? Bennett said. ?It?s an indication of the modernization of how we make contact with people. I?m a major proponent of communications. This is just an extension of that.?

On Thursday at 11 a.m. Bennett?s staff will release a mid-term report online detailing the 45 election proposals he made during the 2010 election campaign and the progress he has made on them, a release from his office states.

(The report can be found here: www.peterborough.ca/City_Hall/Mayor_s_Office/Mid_Term_Report.htm).

At 11 a.m. the following Monday (Oct. 29), residents can Tweet Bennett live at his Twitter handle @MayorBennett with their thoughts and concerns about the report. The discussion can be followed by searching the Twitter hashtag ?#45Proposals.

Bennett, who began a Twitter account during his election campaign and set up his mayoral handle shortly after winning, said it has been an invaluable tool to keep in touch with his constituents.

?We engage on a regular basis and I think that makes me and them feel more connected,? said Bennett, who currently has about 1,200 Twitter followers. ?It?s a great way to make contact. You get 140 (characters) that you can put into your message. That doesn?t give you a whole bunch so that has led to further correspondence by more traditional means.?

The mayor didn?t hold a public dialogue after his first year in office, but said the mid-term report will give residents a good indication of the direction the city has gone with him at the helm.

?I didn?t have much to say after one year. There is a report that is coming out (Thursday) that I think people will find very enlightening,? he said.

Facebook?s Payments Revenue Feels Some Heat, Declines 9% From Last Quarter

Screen Shot 2012-10-23 at 1.17.36 PMMirroring the pain that we're seeing across the entire social gaming industry as players shift toward mobile devices, Facebook's payments and fees revenue declined 9 percent quarter over quarter to $176 million from $192 million. The company may be up 13 percent year-over-year in payments revenue, but you can see a clear peak in this revenue stream happening over the first half of the year. Facebook says this figure may rebound this quarter because it's changing the way it recognizes payments revenue. Before, consumers had a month to dispute charges so payments revenue would actually be recording transactions that were at least a month old. This quarter, the company will record payments revenue as it happens, so there might be an artificial bump this quarter.

Reddit's Internet 2012 bus campaigns for Web freedom

19 hrs.

Entering this enormous bus???draped like an American flag in red, white, and blue???is like going through rooms of a house. First you enter the cramped living room, then a small kitchen, with a sink and fridge on your right and a full bath on your left. The back dining room?s furnished with cushioned seats that wrap around a large, fold-up table.

Most importantly, there?s Wi-Fi and plenty of outlets, because people are using their laptops on that table. This isn?t an ordinary vehicle. It?s the Internet 2012 Bus, driving nearly 2,000 miles across America?s heartland during election season.

In 2008, the same vehicle was used by John McCain for his presidential run, dubbed the ?Straight Talk Express.? Now, it's been given a social media update, with crowdsourced support from the likes of Craigslist founder Craig Newmark, whose name, along with seven other prominent donors, is displayed on the side of the bus. And it?s being?escorted by a?Rally Fighter, a real-life Batmobile that holds the distinction of being the?first car with Creative Commons-licensed designs openly available on the Internet.

They?re coming, perhaps to your hometown, to ensure you realize that the Internet is a political issue worth fighting for.

Behind the wheel, at least symbolically, is Alexis Ohanian, the tall, gregarious, and bright-eyed cofounder of Reddit, along with general manager Erik Martin. Their tremendously popular social news site, which hit 3.4 billion pageviews in August, has become a leader and rallying force in the fight for Internet rights. ??

Back in January, when Congress considered the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA)???an anti-piracy bill that would allow sites to be censored if a visitor posted a link to illegal material???Ohanian personally warned members of Congress about the bill, proclaiming it would ?break the Internet.? And Reddit was the first major site to promise to go dark Jan. 19 for what would become a massive, successful ?strike? against SOPA, with thousands of sites following suit.

Noting the site?s reach and importance, President Obama even visited Reddit last month for its version of a digital town hall meeting, becoming the latest in a long line of politicians and celebrities to field questions and address concerns directly from users. With the Internet 2012 Bus, Ohanian and Martin are turning the tables, hitting the campaign trail in real life and bringing Reddit to your doorstep.

The spectre of SOPA looms large over the trip. The eight-day itinerary is packed with talks, panels, and tours of places with varied ties to the Internet and SOPA, which has become shorthand for any kind of bill that would censor or limit the Web.

?There are going to be more threats to the open Internet that are going to look far less obviously sinister than SOPA,? Ohanian told me as the bus geared up for its first stop???largely referring to lobbyists who represent companies that produce intellectual property, like the movie industry, who have influence in Washington and don?thave a greatrecord when it comes to making sure the Internet stays open and free.

?It?s going to be this sort of death by a thousand cuts.?

That, more or less, is the reason why Reddit has hit the road. Unlike the charge against SOPA???a grand stand that included blackouts of major websites and countless calls to representatives in Congress???this campaign aims to inform voters about what?s at stake before it?s too late, and to inspire them not just to fight against a looming threat, but to stand up for Internet rights routinely. ?

?It?s a lot easier to be against something than for something,? Ohanian explained, ?but that?s why we have to do this.??

Internet?rights ignored by Obama, Romney

Before the bus hit the road, TestPAC, a political action committee founded by redditors, tried to spark a movement to get Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to discuss Internet freedom at the first presidential debate at the University of Denver on Oct. 3. It didn?t work.

Small businesses, on the other hand, were mentioned 22 times between the two candidates. ?It?s small business that creates the jobs in America,? Romney said. Obama bragged that he ?lowered taxes for small businesses" 18 times.

That wasn?t lost on Ohanian and Martin, who, just six miles away, at a bar in downtown Denver called Katie Mullen?s, were hosting a debate-watching party for local redditors. The irony, of course, is that you can no longer separate small businesses and startups from the Internet or propose legislation for one without considering the other. That?s a fundamental issue that weighs heavily on the Internet 2012?s tour itinerary.

?Everywhere we?ll stop, we?ll get to have some cool conversations about the Internet, startups, and jobs,? Martin said the next morning, standing outside the bus before it first left Denver.

Indeed, the bus?s two dozen or so destinations are often small businesses, like Modular Robotics, a small factory that creates what?literally is the building blocks for simple robots. Likewise, Martin and Ohanian will pull over several times to host?panels on Internet startup companies and attend talks, most notably Iowa City?s Startup Weekend.

?For a lot of politicians, it?s really hard to grok that a company could start with one or two people, a little bit of money, like literally enough money to put a roof over their heads and food in their bellies, and within a few years could be valued at a billion dollars and be employing hundreds of people and changing the world,? said Ohanian, shown below speaking with activists, a few days later.

?That?s really hard to grok if you don?t understand the Internet startup economy.?If you had laws in place that are impediments to that, all of a sudden you?re stifling so much potential innovation.?

The?Internet and American values

Before going to the first of the trip?s panels, titled ?The Internet + Politics: Why You Should Give A S***,? the bus took a detour to the Foundry Group. A Boulder-based venture capital firm, Foundry invests early and often in the kinds of online startup companies Internet freedom is thought to promote. Ohanian and Martin wanted to meet with Ryan McIntyre, the company?s managing director.

After 11 folks from the bus piled into the Foundry Group?s sterile conference room, Martin asked McIntyre what the Internet had to do with American values.

?[The Web is] a fundamental mirror of core American traits,? he responded, his head covered with a mop of brown hair, giving him the look of an aging pop star.

?We?ve always had a frontier mentality, a pioneer mentality. Obviously we jealously guard our freedom of speech. You can?t argue against the Internet being a massive enabler of that.?

As he spoke, a documentary crew entered with quiet apologies, setting up across from McIntyre.

?See if you can get Erik, around the shoulder,? said one of the documentarians. Later, when McIntyre went long on an answer, that same documentarian interrupted him.

?Can you hold for one second while I switch batteries?? he asked. ?And can you restate that last part?? he grinned, then joked: ?I want this to be as produced as possible.?

McIntyre, though, was unfazed. Ohanian went on to ask about what the Founding Fathers would have thought about the Internet.

?Ben Franklin made one of his businesses as a newspaper,? McIntyre answered. ?He benefited from the printing press. You think of all the handbills passed around during the time of the American revolution; that was a?sneakernet version of the Internet back then. They recognized the power of disseminating information freely and efficiently?...?

?Pseudonymously,? Martin interjected.

?Pseudonymously. To cause a revolution.?

McIntyre paused, looking at the documentary crew before bringing his gaze back to Ohanian and Martin and finishing his point.

?You know, openness and individuality, and the anti-hierarchical aspect of the Internet, have a lot of parallels with what we believe our core cultural values are in America,? he said.

As McIntrye finished his last answer, Martin flashed him a smile and stood to say goodbye. ?We gotta run,? he said.

?Hopefully there?s something useable in that footage,? McIntyre said.

Reddit?co-founder: 'SOPA would have?crushed?startups'

On the bus ride back that night, Ohanian reminded me he?s a self-proclaimed ?startup guy.? He sold Reddit to Conde Nast in 2006 for somewhere?between $10 and $20 million and has since started several smaller Web-related companies. He?s an investor too, not just the founder of Reddit but someone who?s started and a number of other sites since then.

?I?ve got my entrepreneur hat; I?ve got my investor hat,? he said. ?But underneath them I?m just an American citizen,? he said, earnestly.

I mentioned how he often cited Reddit, the site that made him a millionaire, as a prime example of the kind of site that SOPA could have shuttered immediately.

?That was obviously an example that hit home with me,? Ohanian laughed, pausing momentarily and becoming a little more introspective.

?SOPA would have crushed startups,? he continued. ?They would have had to sign on all kinds of legal costs and had lawyers at the ready. More frightening is that so many bright people who would have started the next Facebook or the next Reddit wouldn?t. They?d say, ?Oh that?s not a business I want to get into. I don?t want to invest all that time and energy and hard work into being an entrepreneur. I?m just gonna get a job somewhere else, do some other thing.?

?And that?s the thing that really terrifies me. The things that couldn?t happen if the values of Internet freedom?weren?t nurtured. I just don?t want to see any of those get wasted.?

Tips To Help Make Your Affiliate Marketing Program A Success ...

Tips To Help Make Your Affiliate Marketing Program A Success

Internet marketing is a hot topic today with lots of information out there. You might know some of it, but it is difficult to know everything about the topic. The more you know, the better your own marketing is. The article offers many ways that you can make the most out of your marketing efforts.

A personal touch can go quite a long way in an ad campaign. By adding your real name and photo, your customers feel like they have a connection to you and your company. In addition, you could provide a personally-written welcome for your customers.

Add your website as a link in each signature block you use. If you use a forum then you should put your link in the signature area. Place a link in your signature in all of your emails. This is a passive way to promote your site all over the Internet, and it might even improve your search engine ranking. As well as the URL, include a short call-to-action phrase.

Putting free samples and coupons inside the boxes when you ship customers orders that are related to the product is a great idea. This gives your customers a good reason to return, and also shows that you appreciate their business.

Be sure to include your signature on both personal and business e mails. Think of your signature as a virtual business card. You will generate more traffic, more word of mouth referrals, and more revenue by sharing your website address with every person you e mail.

Know what audience you want to reach, and what sort of content will be most attractive to it. As soon as you know your target audience, you will have no problem giving them the content to make them consistently come to your site.

Keep the information on your site relevant and current. When people come to your website and see information that is dated, they think that the business is not performing and may be leery of initiating contact with you. A site that is up-to-date and running well is inviting and encouraging for readers.

If you are offering certain claims about your product, they must be true. Offer concrete evidence; create videos of yourself demonstrating your products or the skills necessary to providing the services you offer for instance. This illustrates why you need to sell any products you have used if possible.

Consider giving to charity as part of your business plan. Commit to your customers that you will donate a percentage of all profits to a charity that appeals to their interests. Your image will improve and the charity gives you free advertising. Your image will grow and reshape and your customers will want to give you business over many other people.

Most advertisements that are short and sweet get the most attention, and therefore are the most successful. Highlight how easy it is to submit an order, how quickly the order will be shipped, or the short amount of time it will take to notice results from using the product or service you are offering. Back up your promises by offering fast downloads, a speedy and secure checkout procedure and instant confirmation emails for online orders.

Offer something free with your business name and logo on it. Even a free eBook can be a valuable freebie if it gives information that people need and want. There are many different sites that supply freebies, e-zines and articles that you can attempt to submit to.

When writing content for your site, you should use italics and bolding to help get the message across. Emphasize a phrase or a specific word by bolding, underlining, or italicizing the given text. This can improve clarity and direct the focus of the reader.

Try your hand at mobile marketing. When something goes on sale you will be able to tell your customers through a text message. This up-and-coming form of advertising can really help your marketing campaigns.

Your CRM or ?customer relationship management? is a useful database to help you assess and create marketing success. This can identify present and past customers, along with their purchase history. Then you can create customized communications which emphasize accessories, and similar or complementary products to the ones which have been purchased recently by them, from your site.

A great way to advertise on the Internet and get your business noticed is with video marketing. Adding a video to your website or blog is the best way to attract and hold a customer?s interest in your product. Snappy titles and great graphics will hold the interest of a customer.

Consider sending freebie materials you plan to distribute to free online directories. IF you are giving away an e-zine, give it to a lot of different directories. These sites include free site directories, article directories, e-book directories and dictionaries, as well as many others.

People focus on website URLs. Make sure your website is easy to remember so that a customer will be able to quickly and easily access it whenever they desire. Possibly use your business name as the website URL. Of course, your customers could Google you; however, it would be a lot easier for them if you choose a web address that?s easy to remember. Then they will simply type your web address into their browsers.

Your website needs to be as sales-friendly as possible if your Web marketing efforts are going to be successful. This is done by simply using a few color schemes to realize what will catch the eye of your customer. How a website presents itself is a major determining factor as a visitor decides whether to stay or look elsewhere.

When building your website, use a banner with your mission statement or your customized slogan. Doing so gives your website a professional look, and visitors can quickly understand the website?s function and your goals. This will allow you to highlight your products and services.

Hopefully, you have a new idea or have remembered something you want to use in your internet marketing plan from this article. Apply what fits your circumstances. Continue to sharpen your marketing skills

Ensuring Veterinary Care for All Pets - A Humane Nation - Typepad

HSVMA Rural Area Veterinary Services volunteer vet student with puppy
Windi Wojdak/HSVMA

For several decades, local and national animal protection organizations have worked with focus to reduce euthanasia of homeless pets. In the mid-1970s, there were as many as 15 to 20 million cats and dogs euthanized every year in the United States. Though we still have a long way to go, today those numbers have dropped to less than 4 million, thanks particularly to increased access to spay/neuter and vigorous adoption promotions, and new marketing efforts such as our Shelter Pet Project campaign.

For many families, basic veterinary care such as spay/neuter, basic vaccinations, and other services are simply out of reach both geographically and financially. Betsy McFarland, the vice president of The HSUS?s companion animals department, sent this update about a recent victory in Alabama to protect spay/neuter clinics and critical services for local pet owners:

In The Humane Society of the United States' Pets for Life program, we are learning that in the under-served communities where we work, 53 percent of owners of unaltered pets surveyed had never seen a veterinarian before. Nonprofit spay/neuter programs help remove the barriers to veterinary care and increase general pet wellness care. They also introduce many pet owners to the value of veterinary medicine.

So it was a surprise to many when The Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners recently proposed a preposterous rule that would have forced nonprofit, low-cost spay/neuter clinics in the state to close. The rule would have required that the owners of these nonprofit organizations be licensed veterinarians, and it would have restricted ownership of veterinary materials and equipment to licensed veterinarians. Though veterinarians perform the spay/neuter surgeries, it?s unreasonable to require the groups they work for to be composed entirely of vets.

As The HSUS and The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association argued in its?public opposition to this plan, not only would the rule have had a tremendous negative impact on progress to reduce pet homelessness, but it would have contradicted state and federal law, and was submitted in violation of Alabama?s Administrative Procedure Act. After much outcry from the public, local organizations, national organizations, and even veterinarians in the state, on Wednesday evening the board made an about-face and unanimously voted against the measure.

We applaud the veterinary board for getting back on track. Nonprofit spay/neuter clinics have made a tremendous impact on reducing our homeless pet population. Dedicated nonprofits like Humane Alliance have perfected the high-volume-low-cost spay/neuter clinic model, and thousands of nonprofit operations are helping pets across the country?from stationary clinics, MASH-style clinics, programs that use volunteer veterinarians and shuttle services, mobile clinics, voucher programs, and partnerships with veterinary schools and veterinary technical schools.

And The HSUS? own hands-on programs are providing spay/neuter across the globe?from our Pets for Life program in Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta and Los Angeles, to the Rural Area Veterinary Services program of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, and Humane Society International?s Street Dog Program.?

To achieve the goal of a home for every pet, now is the time to increase access to spay/neuter, not reduce it. By removing barriers to veterinary services, we can strengthen the human-animals bond and empower people to provide the best care possible for the animals in our communities.

'What?s worse, another war in the Middle East or a nuclear armed Iran?'

The testy exchanges between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan continued as moderator Martha Raddatz asked the two men what would be worse, another war in the Middle East or a nuclear armed Iran?

"A nuclear armed Iran that leads to a catastrophic nuclear arms race in the Middle East," Ryan said.

Biden continued to scoff and shake his head while Ryan answered, once again interjecting with, "This is a bunch of malarkey." When it was his turn to respond, Biden took the opposite path as Ryan, saying, "War should always be the last resort."

However, before that, Biden said it is? administration policy to stop Iran from getting a nuclear bomb. "We will not allow the Iranians to get a nuclear weapon," Biden insisted. "Unlike when we took office, if we take action, we will have the world behind us. And that matters."

Space shuttle making 12-mile trip to LA museum

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? At its prime, the space shuttle Endeavour circled the globe at 17,500 mph, faster than a speeding bullet.

In retirement, it's crawling along the streets of Los Angeles at a sluggish 2 mph, a pace that rush-hour commuters can sympathize with.

Endeavour's two-day, 12-mile road trip to the California Science Center where it will be put on display kicked off early Friday. Rolled on a 160-wheeled carrier, it left from a hangar at the Los Angeles International Airport, passing diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs, and reached city streets about two hours later.

Hundreds of spectators, some with pajama-clad children in tow, waited in the predawn darkness. In unison, they held up their cameras and cellphones and gaped as the 170,000-pound Endeavour inched by with its tail towering over streetlights and its wings spanning the roadway.

It made stop-and-go progress, with some halts to check its balance and to prune trees in its path as it crept past strip malls and storefronts.

In a massive feat of parallel parking, the shuttle was backed into a shopping center parking lot in the Westchester neighborhood around 5:30 a.m. ? later than expected.

Janet Dion, a family therapist from nearby Manhattan Beach, was in awe as she marveled at Endeavour, its sides weathered by millions of miles in space and two dozen re-entries.

"You can sense the magnitude of where it's been," Dion said, focusing on the heat tiles that protected the shuttle during the return to Earth.

"It's exciting to see the tiles up close, especially the texture of the tiles," she said. "It's amazing. You can almost feel the fabric of it, like a skin. Like our skin."

Everyone it seemed wanted to pose with Endeavour. Firefighters, police officers and construction workers on duty took turns standing in front of it.

Others saw an opportunity to make a buck. Jason Duran and his friend printed up Endeavour T-shirts and hawked them for $30.

"We're entrepreneurs," he said.

Endeavour will remain at the parking lot for a nine-hour layover as crews worked to widen the carrier so that it could straddle the median during the next part of the trip. It was expected to move again in early afternoon then stop for several more hours to transfer to a special dolly for the cross over the busy Interstate 405 at night.

Ushering a shuttle through an urban core is a logistical challenge that took almost a year to plan. Guarded by a security detail reminiscent of a presidential visit, police enforced rolling street and sidewalk closures as early as Thursday night in some locations and discouraged spectators from swarming side streets.

The behemoth transport has caused headaches for shopkeepers along the route who counted on cheering crowds jamming the curbs to boost business.

In the days leading up to Endeavour's move, the owners of Randy's Donuts sold shuttle-shaped pastries emblazoned with the NASA logo and even hung a miniature shuttle replica inside the giant doughnut sign visible from the freeway.

Co-owner Larry Weintraub planned to watch the shuttle creep by the roadside sign, which has been featured in several movies. But the store, which serves up sweets 24-7, will be closed.

"I'm still excited, but I'm disappointed that people aren't going to be able to stand in the streets and shout 'Yay,'" he said.

Saturday is typically the busiest day for James Fugate, who co-owns Eso Won Books in South Los Angeles. But with Endeavour expected to shuffle through, Fugate braced for a ho-hum day in sales.

"We don't close because we're slow. That's when you pull out a book to read," he said.

The baby of the shuttle fleet, Endeavour replaced Challenger, which exploded during liftoff in 1986, killing seven astronauts. It thundered off the launch pad 25 times, orbited Earth nearly 4,700 times and racked up 123 million miles.

Last month, it wowed throngs with a dizzying aerial loop, soaring over the state Capitol, Golden Gate Bridge, Hollywood Sign and other California landmarks while strapped to the back of a modified 747 before finally landing at LAX.

The last leg of Endeavour's retirement journey skips the tourist attractions and instead, winds through blue-collar communities in southern Los Angeles County. While viewing will be severely curtailed due to sidewalk shutdowns, crowds are still expected.

Moving the Endeavour required a specialized carrier typically used to haul oil rigs, bridges and heavy equipment. The wheels can spin in any direction, allowing the shuttle to zigzag past obstacles. An operator walks alongside, controlling the movements via joystick. Several spotters along the wings are on the lookout for hazards.

To make room for the five-story-tall shuttle and its 78-foot wingspan, some 400 trees were chopped down, cable and telephone lines were raised, and steel plates were laid down to protect the streets and underground utilities.

Endeavour will mostly travel on wide boulevards with some boasting as many lanes as a freeway. While there have been advance preparations, there is remaining work to be done during the move, including de-energizing power lines. Southern California Edison warned of outages in the suburb of Inglewood.

One of the trickiest parts involves trundling through a narrow residential street with apartment buildings on both sides. With Endeavour's wings expected to intrude into driveways, residents have been told to stay indoors until the shuttle passes.

The route was selected after ruling out other options. Dismantling the shuttle would have ruined the delicate heat tiles. Helicoptering it to its destination was not feasible. Neither was crossing on freeways since the shuttle is too big to fit through the underpasses. The cost of transporting it cross-town was estimated at over $10 million.

As complex as the latest endeavor is, Southern California is no stranger to moving heavy things.

In 1946, Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose" aircraft was built in sections and hauled from Culver City to Long Beach, 30 miles away. In 1984, an old United Airlines DC-8, with its wings and tail disassembled, was towed from Long Beach to the science center.

Earlier this year, a two-story-tall chunk of granite was hauled 105 miles from a rock quarry to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Basics of Forex Economic Indicators | Forex Crunch

This tutorial highlights some of the Forex economic indicators that will be able to guide the trader?s path in understanding financial and economic data.

Some indicators are very important for certain markets, e.g. Non-farm payroll releases in the US, and others may not be as important.

Guest post by Alexander Collins

Financial Data that Affects Currencies

Economic indicators are signals that provide guidance to the underlying data. This information is critical for traders to make buy and sell decisions. Financial economic indicators also describe the condition of the country?s economy and its impact on currencies.

Various governments and private financial organizations release economic data from time to time. This is part of public policy to keep everyone informed of changes to the country?s economy. These releases adhere to set schedules and traders keep watch for these pieces of data to make decisions.

The release of important indicators often results in increased trading volume and activity that in turn affects currency markets. Analysts will provide reams of information related to these indicators but traders do not need to have great theoretic knowledge to judge their importance.

Schedules of Indicators

Since the release dates and times of economic indicators are known in advance, traders generally track them closely. There are many online and offline media that will have this data instantly updated. Many trading software can automatically alert traders to the new data coming out. Also, many online brokers and dealers highlight them on their websites instantly.

Forex economic indicators represent several underlying economic data such as a country?s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employment statistics such as non-farm payrolls, and other vital information such as Consumer Price Index that is an indicator of inflation in the country. Every indicator is useful in gauging the country?s economic pulse and how it will impact its currency in relation to others.

Traders can be overwhelmed by the barrage of economic data that is continuously being released by all the countries in the world. It is important to learn which of the economic indicators are critical important and which can be ignored. Some of the closely followed indicators that have a known effect on markets are the Non Farm Payroll data from the US, GDP figures and Central Banks? Interest Rate changes.

Analyzing

Economic indicators dealing with inflation data such as CPI are important when related to certain countries but not to others. As the US dollar is a key driver in the Forex markets, any indicator that relates to the US or its Federal Reserve is watched alertly by traders. And known as the market movers in a big way, so it is good to anticipate them.

Forex economic indicators are universally available to traders but each trader may judge them in their own special way. There is always more than one opinion to analyze any of them. If traders feel positively about it, they will buy the underlying currency, or else sell it. This leads to major volatility in the market since traders want to make most of the opportunity generated by the release of an economic indicator.

Anticipating

Many of indicators are anticipated by market analysts and financial gurus. They try to predict these numbers based on their study of the economy. Many traders follow these predictions. When a released is quite different from the anticipated figure then it can cause quite a bit of volatility. Traders try to come to grips with the changed situation and assess their own exposure to the Forex market.

Example

For example, let?s say the prediction was that Non-Farm Payrolls would register a net gain of 10,000 jobs. Traders tend to position themselves in the market for this outcome. However, if the actual data came out as net loss of 25,000 jobs, there would be a wave of shock in the trading community. Such unexpected releases are common. Traders who were exposed to the market would immediately wish to liquidate their positions. This causes a run on the short side for the US dollar, with the exchange rate literally falling to the floor rapidly.

Some of the surprises in Forex economic indicators are related to revisions in data posted earlier. Governments and other organizations frequently revise older data based on any new information they receive. This impacts the current economic indicators, so traders are advised to look at these older revisions to understand the causes for the unexpected changes.

Economic indicators are a very big help for traders to develop their trading strategies. Traders must be aware of the schedule of the releases of financial data as these will have an effect on their already open positions. Traders have to follow Forex economic indicators especially for the countries whose currencies they regularly trade to gauge the outlooks of their respective economies.

The good, the bad, and the guilty: Anticipating feelings of guilt predicts ethical behavior

From politics to finance, government to education, ethics-related scandals seem to crop up with considerable regularity. As whistleblowers and investigative journalists bring these scandals to light, one can't help but wonder: Are there specific character traits that predispose people to unethical behavior?

Converging evidence suggests that the answer could be guilt proneness.

In a new article in Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, researchers Taya Cohen and Nazli Turan of Carnegie Mellon University and A.T. Panter of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill examine the existing research on guilt proneness, exploring how it might influence our behavior in the workplace and beyond.

According to Cohen, Panter, and Turan, guilt proneness isn't the same thing as feeling guilty after you've done something wrong people who are guilt prone actually anticipate having negative feelings before they ever commit a moral transgression. Importantly, these people don't need their mother, their boss, or their significant other looking over their shoulder to prevent them from committing moral transgressions because their conscience does it for them.

Guilt proneness can be measured with four items, drawn from the Guilt and Shame Proneness scale (GASP), which ask people to imagine how they would feel in a given scenario. Although answers to the items vary across different groups of participants, the researchers estimate that about 30% to 40% of the adults they have surveyed are considered low in guilt proneness.

Not surprisingly, guilt proneness seems to be correlated with certain aspects of personality. Research suggests that people who are high in guilt proneness are more likely to be sympathetic, take the perspective of others, consider the future consequences of their behavior, and value having moral traits. Furthermore, women are more guilt prone than men, and older adults are more guilt prone than younger adults.

Across several studies, Cohen, Panter, and Turan have found that people who report higher levels of guilt proneness are less likely to make unethical business decisions, lie for monetary gain, or cheat during negotiations. People who are guilt prone are also less likely to engage in counterproductive work behaviors, like showing up to work late without permission, stealing office supplies, and being rude to clients, even after taking into account other factors like gender, age, and interpersonal conflict at work.

All of this research suggests that it may be wise to keep guilt proneness in mind, whether we are looking for an ethical friend, an ethical lover, or an ethical employee.

The guilt-proneness scale has the potential to be "an important measurement tool for predicting which individuals are likely to behave unethically in their social interactions inside and outside the workplace," Cohen and her colleagues write. The researchers encourage additional research to examine whether GASP might be a useful and valid tool in high-stakes settings such as personnel selection.
