Dashlane 1.0 (for iPhone)

If you're both security-conscious and lazy, Dashlane 1.0 for iPhone (free) is the perfect app for you. This slick mobile complement to the Editors' Choice-winning desktop password manager securely saves all your login names and passwords, which you can then copy and paste into web-based logins in your Safari browser. All you need to remember is a single master password.

In terms of features, Dashlane for the iPhone doesn't beat LastPass Premium for iPhone ($1/month, 3 stars), which comes with a decent, slightly sluggish built-in browser that autofills your login information. Furthermore Dashlane's app is read-only for now, so you can't add new passwords like you can in LastPass's app. However Dashlane for iPhone is far more elegant and polished than LastPass Premium for iPhone, so you're more likely to stick with it.

Setup
Start by creating a free account through Dashlane's desktop application. Dashlane's desktop application uses a novel, foursquare-like points and badges system to sustain and grow its user base, and you earn points by simply using the application. The Dashlane app is free, but you need 25,000 points to unlock it, and the quickest way to do so is by making a successful email referral. As Dashlane adds more features to the app, you may need to earn more points to unlock them.

The first time you open the app you have to pass a two-factor login authentication. Afterwards, you only need to enter your master password each time you log in, with no option to save the password. This is a good thing, and here's why: every time you log in, all the information stored in your vault is immediately decrypted and stored locally?and immediately deleted once the app times out and you're logged out. Unlike LastPass, in which you can choose to never sign out, Dashlane automatically times out every few minutes. This is a tedious but secure practice meant to save you from your own laziness.

Tap into your vault to view stored contact information, login usernames and passwords, and IDs. For now, you can only copy and paste login information to fill out form fields in your Safari browser or in other apps. You can do this in LastPass's iPhone app too, but through the more conventional means of tapping your saved data and holding to open the copy or paste pop-up command.

In Dashlane it's much simpler?you merely need to tap buttons like Copy Login or Copy Password. Alternatively, you can launch saved URLs in Safari which will sign you in automatically. In LastPass, you have to use LastPass's built-in browser?a rather slow-loading version of Safari?to autofill login information.

Not Yet Indispensible
As far as password managers go, Dashlane's first app is intuitively designed, but too limited in scope to be truly indispensible. We're told an upcoming version this summer will likely come with a Safari-like browser to let you autofill form fields, and include a secure click-to-pay option for mobile shoppers (similar to the desktop edition's express checkout feature). Android support is slated for June. If Dashlane can accomplish all this while retaining the elegance of its inaugural app, we may have an Editors' Choice on our hands. ?

Ageing, Health & Envoirnment: Partnerships for Excellence ...

The Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Studies officially launched an MSc. Degree in Ageing, Health and Environment at our Ageing, Health and Environment: Partnerships for Excellence Conference in May. The programme was developed in collaboration with the Netwell Reseach Centre and School of Business and Humanities in Dundalk Institute of Technology and older person service providers in the North East region.

The programme philosophy stems from the beliefs that ageing is a positive life event and that older people benefit when communities and older people services are designed to be age friendly. Older people are affected in may ways by how and where they live. Their ability to participate in the social, economic and cultural life of a community or residential care setting and their physical and psychological health and well being are determined by the environment in which they live. The programme aims, through eclectic teaching and learning methods and work-based learning, to develop and enhance the students knowledge and skills in working with older people. Specifically, the programme aims to develop reflective, knowledgeable and critically thinking professionals who will use a person-centered approach to practice and act as positive change agents in older person care in community and residential care settings. The focus on a practice innovation project for the Masters programme affords the opportunity for students to identify a real issue in their work environment and using skills obtained in the programme to develop an innovation with the potential to elicit change.

Applications are now sought from healthcare professionals and individuals who are involved in the delivery, management and/or planning of services for older people. The closing date for applications for the September 2012 intake is July 13th 2012. Further information on the programme and application process is available at www.learn.ie . Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require any further information.

Travel + Leisure: America's Worst-Dressed People (PHOTOS)

When it comes to dress sense, what's worse: layer upon bulky layer of long underwear and puffy coats? Flashy, barely-there outfits? Or downright sloppiness?

Travel + Leisure readers rated major destinations in categories including style for the annual America's Favorite Cities survey -- and the results confirm that city dwellers fall short of fashionable in myriad ways. But it's Anchorage that earned the dubious honor of No. 1 worst-dressed city in America.

That's no surprise to Dr. Miriam Jones, a paleoclimatologist who has traveled in and out of Anchorage "too many times to count" during a two-year research stint.

"It's not uncommon to see oversized parkas with fur-lined hoods and bunny boots," she says. "And people aren't alarmed when a person wearing a ski mask enters a room." In Alaska, she adds, men sport beards and flannel in the most unironic way possible: to keep frostbite at bay and their appendages attached.

Dressing well certainly has an element of personal taste, and this survey is based on visitors' perceptions, not scientific fact. So, did T+L readers deem your city to be one of America's worst dressed? Read on to find out, and feel free to defend local fashions in the comments.

  • No. 10 Kansas City, MO

America's No. 1 city for barbecue does not a fashionista make. Kansas City residents are among some of our nation's friendliest, and they can school anyone and everyone about the intricacies of grilling, but it looks like they're lost when it comes to putting together an outfit. See More of America's Worst-Dressed People Photo: Ann Shields

  • No. 9 Phoenix/Scottsdale

Here's a hint: if a city has a museum exhibit dedicated to the bolo tie, it's not going to be fashion forward. The official neckwear of Arizona (yes, that's a thing) is enjoying a comeback. But sunny Phoenix made the top 10 for spring break destinations -- when attire is almost beside the point. See More of America's Worst-Dressed People Photo: iStock

  • No. 8 Portland, ME

With some of the most limited shopping options in America and one of its least diverse populations, Portland isn't where you come to try on cutting-edge clothing. But that's just fine because the city slays the competition in other areas, placing first in five survey categories, including best summer destination and best drivers. See More of America's Worst-Dressed People Photo: Courtesy of Greater Portland Convention & Visitors Bureau

  • No. 7 Atlanta

If the flashy reality-TV stars of The Real Housewives of Atlanta are at all indicative of how the rest of Atlanta dresses, it's no wonder our readers ranked it as America's No. 7 least-stylish city. Hotlanta has one of the highest per capita incomes of any southern city, but as the TV show illustrates and the saying goes: money can't buy taste. See More of America's Worst-Dressed People Photo: iStock

  • No. 6 Dallas/Fort Worth

Bigger seems to always be better in the Dallas/Fort Worth area; just take one look at the infamously over-the-top JumboTron at the Cowboys Stadium. And when it comes to getting dressed, big hair, conspicuous designer labels and slick snakeskin boots are the norm. "Less is more" is not a phrase heard round these parts. See More of America's Worst-Dressed People Photo: iStock

  • No. 5 San Antonio, TX

San Antonio is known for rodeos not runways. Take the famous San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, a three-week extravaganza at which you won't feel comfortable unless you're suited up in western attire -- from your head (one of those sweet hats) to your toes (cowboy boots). See More of America's Worst-Dressed People Photo: Carol Barrington/SACVB

  • No. 4 Orlando

Orlando was voted the No. 1 family vacation destination, so visitors were likely focused on people seen around the theme parks, which aren't exactly crowded with fashionistas -- enduring Disney World's winding lines in stilettos would be crazy. The city did win raves for its weather and variety of hotel options. See More of America's Worst-Dressed People Photo: Ian Dagnall / Alamy

  • No. 3 Baltimore

In a city judged to have fairly offbeat residents, there are bound to be questionable fashion choices. Case in point: the Baltimore Hons, a group of people who sport the '50s cat-eye-glasses look with gusto. Some visitors have their sights focused elsewhere, anyway, using Baltimore as a convenient, affordable base for day trips (ranked No. 12). See More of America's Worst-Dressed People Photo: iStock

  • No. 2 Salt Lake City

Voters rated Salt Lake City one of the top 10 quietest cities in the nation and praised it for affordability and cleanliness. But T+L readers didn't equate those squeaky-clean locals with fashion-forward ways -- perhaps because, male or female, there are only so many ways to rock a polo shirt. See More of America's Worst-Dressed People Photo: Danita Delimont / Alamy

  • No. 1 Anchorage

In chilly Anchorage, the dress code leans toward practicality rather than fashion, and many residents teeter through the streets bundled as tightly as Randy, the kid brother in "A Christmas Story." Fashion trends take longer to reach this hinterland, but travelers are happy to make the trek regardless -- especially in summer -- and rated the city No. 4 for peace and quiet. See More of America's Worst-Dressed People Photo: Nigel Hicks / Alamy

AP Exclusive: Calif. 9/11 fund raided for deficits

(AP) ? After the 2001 terrorist attacks, California lawmakers sought a way to channel the patriotic fervor and use it to help victims' families and law enforcement. Their answer: specialty memorial license plates emblazoned with the words, "We Will Never Forget."

Part of the money raised through the sale of the plates was to fund scholarships for the children of California residents who perished in the attacks, while the majority ? 85 percent ? was to help fund anti-terrorism efforts.

But an Associated Press review of the $15 million collected since lawmakers approved the "California Memorial Scholarship Program" shows only a small fraction of the money went to scholarships. While 40 percent has funded anti-terror training programs, $3 million was raided by Gov. Jerry Brown and his predecessor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to plug the state's budget deficit.

Millions more have been spent on budget items with little relation to direct threats of terrorism, including livestock diseases and workplace safety.

Moreover, the California Department of Motor Vehicles has been advertising the plates as helping the children of Sept. 11 victims even though the state stopped funding the scholarship program seven years ago. The specialty plate fund continues to take in $1.5 million a year.

Californians who lost loved ones in the attacks take the raid on the license plate fund as an affront to the memory of those who died.

"I can't believe that they would do that," said Candice Hoglan, who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and bought a plate to commemorate her nephew, Mark Bingham. "We're paying extra for the plate; we're making a point, and it means a lot to us."

Bingham was killed on United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania, and was one of the passengers who led the attempt to wrest control from the hijackers. His mother, Alice Hoagland, also was troubled by the program's apparent drift from its original purpose.

"I'm sorry that as we retreat in time from 9/11, we seem to be retreating in our resolve never to forget," she said in a telephone interview.

The plates, which cost an initial $50 plus a $40 annual renewal fee, feature an American flag partially obscured by clouds and the "never forget" slogan. Residents of California, where all four jetliners were bound when they were hijacked, have bought or renewed the plates more than 200,000 times since 2002.

Of the other states directly associated with the 2001 attacks, only Virginia has established a similar specialty plate program. Yet it did not set up a special fund for the proceeds of its "Fight Terrorism" plate.

For the past decade, the California DMV has said on its website that the money will "fund scholarships for the children of Californians who died in the September 11, 2001, terror attacks and helps California's law enforcement fight threats of terrorism." It advertises the program with the slogan, "Be a patriot."

While the DMV description of the program was not "totally disingenuous," the department should probably remove references to the scholarship program, said Joe DeAnda, a spokesman for the state treasurer's office, which disburses the money.

"It's out of date and it's on DMV to update that," he said.

Late Friday, the department modified the description of the license plate on its website to remove the reference to the scholarship program in response to the investigation by the AP, which began in March. Spokeswoman Jan Mendoza said the reason promotional materials were not updated sooner was "unknown."

The DMV still lists the scholarship program on the online and hardcopy form drivers fill out to buy the license plates, but Mendoza said the department will change this next time the forms are printed.

The legislation establishing the plates had earmarked 15 percent of the revenue for scholarships. Yet only $21,381 has reached the children and spouses of the three dozen California residents killed during the terrorist attacks. The state treasurer's office closed the scholarship program in 2005, the sign-up deadline for potential recipients, and has $60,000 in reserve.

The total amount dedicated to scholarships was 1.5 percent of the $5.5 million raised through the sale of the plates through 2005.

The original legislation said the remainder of the money would go to "law enforcement, fire protection, and public health agencies" to be used "exclusively for purposes directly related to fighting terrorism."

But in 2008, former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, borrowed $2 million to close a budget gap. Last year, Brown, a Democrat, borrowed another $1 million.

Neither loan has been repaid nor are their deadlines to ensure they will be. Elizabeth Ashford, a spokeswoman for Brown, said the loans have done no harm.

"We're trying to simultaneously balance the budget and fund important programs," she said. "If there was an indication that borrowing this money was going to negatively impact this program, we wouldn't borrow the money."

The rest of the money has gone to a wide array of budgets and programs.

The Legislature sent $3.7 million to the California Department of Food and Agriculture, according to the Department of Finance, to establish an online food monitoring database and implement a variety of worker safety programs, including hiring industrial hygienists to tend to worker health.

But it is difficult to say precisely where the money has gone. Late Friday, the agriculture department delivered documents it said were in response to a California Public Records Act request the AP filed eight weeks earlier.

The response contained itemized budget reports going back six years and listing payments for all types of government functions, ranging from salaries and benefits, to printing costs and communication equipment. Among the details: $18,163 for furniture in 2006 and $11,492 for auto inspection in 2009.

The response also included a legislative report on the threats the agriculture department is targeting with an online database the license plate program helps fund . A similar report from 2006, when the license plate money was first authorized, lists bioterrorism as a potential danger. But the 2011 report focuses on food safety and livestock concerns, including foot-and-mouth disease and meat and poultry monitoring.

Director of Animal Health and Food Safety Services Annette Whiteford said the department does not track license plate money separately from other funds.

She said it would be wasteful to reserve the money exclusively for anti-terrorism work. For example, the department uses some of the money to buy safety suits that would be essential during an anthrax attack but also are useful for routine food investigations.

"The things that I worry about in the animal food safety division are very high consequence events, but very infrequent. So I always try to leverage those resources," she said.

Another $2 million has gone to programs that aim to protect Californians from all manner of potential threats, not just those related to terrorism.

The California Emergency Management Agency used nearly $1 million in memorial license plate money for general operations, including administrative costs, buying and fueling cars, and hiring a person from 2007 to 2009 to coordinate five so-called "fusion centers," according to documents obtained through a Public Records Act request.

The other $1 million went directly to the fusion centers, which were founded after the 2001 attacks to focus on terrorist threats but have since switched to an "all crimes" approach that includes gang activity and natural disasters.

Herb Wesson, who wrote the license plate bill when he was speaker of the California Assembly, said he was saddened to hear how the money had been spent.

"I understand the financial climate they find themselves in, but they are not following the spirit and intent of the legislation," said Wesson, now president of the Los Angeles City Council. "The lion's share of the money was supposed to be given to local law enforcement so that they could beef up their anti-terrorism operations."

About 40 percent of the total raised to date, or $6 million, has gone to anti-terrorism training programs for firefighters and law enforcement officers. There is a slight discrepancy between the DMV's revenue figures and the Department of Finance's expenditure figures that neither agency could explain.

Patricia Anderson, who paid $98 for a personalized memorial plate reading "WE R 4US," said she signed up for the program primarily to show respect for victims of the 9/11 attacks. Anderson said she was disheartened but not surprised to learn that much of the money has gone to fill the state deficit or used for general purposes.

"That's California," said Anderson, who now lives near Austin, Texas. "It's kind of a given these days ? nothing is spent on what it's supposed to be."

Common Painkillers May Help Prevent Skin Cancer: Study

TUESDAY, May 29 (HealthDay News) -- Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) -- which include medicine cabinet staples such as aspirin, Motrin and Aleve -- appears to significantly lower the risk for developing several major forms of skin cancer, a new Danish study reveals.

What's more, the apparent protective impact of both prescription and nonprescription NSAIDs on skin cancer risk seems to be stronger the longer someone takes them.

Over-the-counter NSAIDs are used to control pain, fever and swelling. NSAIDs also include prescription medicines called COX-2 enzyme inhibitors, such as Celebrex (celecoxib).

"Our study showed that users of common painkillers, known as NSAIDs, have a lower risk of the three major types of skin cancer, [including] malignant melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma," said study lead author, Sigrun Alba Johannesdottir, at the department of clinical epidemiology at Aarhus University Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark.

"The greatest effect," she noted, "was found for squamous cell carcinomas and malignant melanoma, especially when [these painkillers were] taken frequently and over a long time period."

The study appears in the May 29 online issue of the journal Cancer.

The authors noted that prior work supported the notion that NSAIDs may offer some measure of protection against cancer (most notably colorectal cancer), by specifically impeding the cancer-causing activities of COX-2 (cyclooxygenase) enzymes.

However, the team suggested that past investigations into how NSAIDs may affect skin cancer risk, in particular, had key design problems that undercut efforts to nail down any NSAID-skin cancer connection.

For the new study, the researchers analyzed prescription databases and health information registries including the Danish Cancer Registry and the Danish Civil Registration System.

The team focused on diagnostic and death records concerning nearly 2,000 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, about 13,300 cases of basal cell carcinoma and nearly 3,250 cases of malignant melanoma diagnosed between 1991 and 2009 when the patients were at least 20 years old.

In turn, prescription histories were gathered for both the cancer patient group and almost 179,000 healthy Danes. Records covered the use of both low- and high-dose aspirin (ranging from 75 milligrams to 500 milligrams), so-called "nonselective" NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen [Advil] and naproxen [Aleve], and both older and newer types of COX-2 inhibitors. Researchers noted the number of prescriptions issued per patient and their length of use, with short-term use defined as fewer than seven years.

The result: The relative risk for squamous cell carcinoma was found to have dropped by 15 percent among those Danes who had filled more than two NSAID prescriptions, compared to those who had filled two or less.

Similarly, malignant melanoma risk fell by nearly as much (13 percent) among those filling more than two NSAID prescriptions.

However, the same dynamic was generally not seen with regards to basal cell carcinoma. But taking NSAIDs for long periods of time, and at relatively high doses, was associated with a reduced risk (between 15 and 21 percent), specifically for basal cell cases that manifested in skin regions that typically experience relatively little sun exposure (areas other than the neck or head).

On that front, long-term users and those who took NSAIDs at relatively higher doses appeared to benefit from the strongest protective effect, suggesting that when it comes to skin cancer risk reduction, more NSAID use is better.

The researchers pointed out that the NSAID-cancer connection could be affected by a range of lifestyle factors they did not account for, such as an individual's specific skin type or sun exposure patterns.

But Johannesdottir added that "we hope that our finding will inspire more research on skin cancer prevention. Also, the potential cancer-protective effect should be taken into account when discussing benefits and harms of NSAID use," she noted.

However, "other studies need to detail the association further and to examine benefits versus risks," she cautioned. "Meanwhile, the most important prevention against skin cancer remains sun protection."

Meanwhile, Dr. William Ting, a private practice dermatologist in San Ramon, Calif., praised the study despite agreeing that many factors are at play when it comes to skin cancer formation.

"Now we have a better understanding that inflammation also plays a significant role in cancer formation and even skin cancers," he said.

And, "this exciting article gives physicians and consumers a relatively simple way of diminishing one's risk of skin cancer by doing what most of us are doing already for heart health," Ting added. Ting also advised that people consult with their doctor before starting on any blood thinner.

While the study found an association between skin cancer risk and NSAIDs, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

In weekly address, GOP says Obama "demonizes" domestic energy

(CBS News) This Memorial Day, both President Obama and the Republicans dedicated their weekly address to American service members; however, the Republican address focused mostly on their plan for the economy.

Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-Kan.), who represents Fort Leavenworth and Fort Riley, said the "blessing of liberty" should be honored, "that is why helping to create jobs and grow our economy will continue to be Republicans' focus in the weeks and months ahead."

The two-term member of Congress said the Republican plan for economic growth "emphasizes long-term growth" and not "short-term stimulus."

Central to the Republican's economic plan is developing American oil and gas production, including the construction of the XL Keystone pipeline.

"The President demonizes home grown energy and pursues tax policies that advantage foreign energy over domestic," Jenkins said.

Meanwhile in his short weekly address,?President Obama said the U.S. needs to "serve" service members who return home with healthcare and access to education.

"We have to serve them and their families as well as they have served us: by making sure that they get the healthcare and benefits they need; by caring for our wounded warriors and supporting our military families; and by giving veterans the chance to go to college, find a good job, and enjoy the freedom that they risked everything to protect," the president said.

The president and first lady Michelle Obama are spending Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery and with Vietnam veterans at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to mark the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.
