New jobs disproportionately low-pay or part-time

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The 162,000 jobs the economy added in July were a disappointment. The quality of the jobs was even worse.

A disproportionate number of the added jobs were part-time or low-paying ? or both.

Part-time work accounted for more than 65 percent of the positions employers added in July. Low-paying retailers, restaurants and bars supplied more than half July's job gain.

"You're getting jobs added, but they might not be the best-quality job," says John Canally, an economist with LPL Financial in Boston.

So far this year, low-paying industries have provided 61 percent of the nation's job growth, even though these industries represent just 39 percent of overall U.S. jobs, according to Labor Department numbers analyzed by Moody's Analytics. Mid-paying industries have contributed just 22 percent of this year's job gain.

"The jobs that are being created are not generating much income," Steven Ricchiuto, chief economist at Mizuho Securities USA, wrote in a note to clients.

That's one reason Americans' pay hasn't kept up with even historically low inflation since the Great Recession ended in June 2009. Average hourly pay fell 2 cents in July to $23.98 an hour.

Among those feeling the squeeze is Elizabeth Wilkinson, 28, of Houston. After losing a $39,000-a-year administrative job at Rice University in January, Wilkinson found work at an employment agency for $15 an hour. Yet she's had to supplement that job with part-time work as a waitress.

"This morning I put $1.35 worth of gas in my car because that is all the money that I had," Wilkinson said via email. "It's very difficult to survive on $30,000 (a year), and I am living paycheck to paycheck."

Part-time work has made up 77 percent of the job growth so far this year. The government defines part-time work as being less than 35 hours a week.

Analysts say some employers are offering part-time over full-time work to sidestep the new health care law's rule that they provide medical coverage for permanent workers. (The Obama administration has delayed that provision for a year.)

Weak economies overseas have also reduced demand for U.S. goods and, as a result, for better-paying U.S. jobs in manufacturing. Government spending cuts have taken a toll on some middle-class jobs, too.

Many employers have also discovered that they can use technology to do tasks more cheaply and efficiently than office workers used to do. And some have found that they can shift middle-class jobs to low-wage countries such as China.

By contrast, most lower-paying jobs ? from waiters and hotel maids to store clerks, bartenders and home health care aides ? can't be automated or shipped abroad.

"You're always going to have jobs in the retail sector," says Michael Evangelist, a policy analyst with the liberal National Employment Law Project, which advocates on behalf of low-wage workers.

Consider Mike Ulrich, 30, who earned a master's degree in public administration in May from the University of Colorado. Ulrich hasn't been able to find work that requires a college degree. Instead, he works at a hardware store in Spokane, Wash., earning the state's minimum wage: $9.19 an hour.

Not all July's new jobs were low-paying. Local schools hired more than 10,000 teachers and other employees. Financial firms added 15,000.

And Scott Anderson, chief economist at Bank of the West, thinks concerns about the surge in part-time work might be overblown. The government's figures on part-time jobs are highly volatile, Anderson notes. The big gain this year could quickly reverse, he says.

Yet for the most part, Daniel Alpert, managing partner of Westwood Capital, wrote in a report last month, "the only folks engaging in meaningful hiring are doing so because labor is cheap."

The low quality of the added jobs could help explain something that has puzzled economists: How has the U.S. economy managed to add an average of roughly 200,000 jobs a month this year even though it grew at a tepid annual rate below 2 percent in the first half of the year?

Some are proposing an answer: Perhaps a chronically slow-growth economy can't generate many good-paying jobs ? but can produce lots of part-time or lower-wage retail and restaurant work.

Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial, recalls that the robust economic growth of the late '90s generated millions of middle-class jobs. And it pushed unemployment so low that short-staffed companies were forced to convert part-time jobs into full-time ones.

"Faster growth would fix things," Swonk says. "That's the magic fairy dust."

Ohio AG warns of scams targeting military

COLUMBUS, OHIO ? Ohio?s attorney general has warned members of the U.S. military and their families to be alert to consumer scams, including some specifically targeting military personnel.

Attorney General Mike DeWine says some of the military-specific scams include targeting grandparents of military personnel. The scammers claim the consumer?s grandchild in the military has been arrested and detained overseas and the grandparents must wire money.

Other scams involve family members of deployed service members being asked to send money so the service members can go on early leave.

DeWine encourages active-duty military members and their families to report any consumer complaints to his office. DeWine says his office offers a fast-track complaint process and some free legal services to military personnel.

Police shoot dead armed 14-year-old boy in New York City

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A police officer shot an armed 14-year-old boy in New York City early on Sunday after he did not drop his gun when ordered, police said.

After hearing gunshots, two officers came across the boy, whom police identified as Shaaliver Douse, chasing another male down a street in the South Bronx, shooting after him with a 9-millimeter semi-automatic handgun as he ran, police said.

The uniformed officers identified themselves as police and ordered Douse to drop his gun, police said. He did not do so, and one of the officers shot a single round, hitting Douse in his lower left jaw, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both police officers, who joined the force in January, were taken to a hospital to be treated for tinnitus and trauma.

Dean to challenge Hurst in GOP race for House District 35

Election season next year will again find Munford businessman Steve Dean challenging state Rep. Steve Hurst, but in this case the contest will be the June 3 Republican party primary.

In 2010, Dean and Hurst both ran to represent House District 35, which includes parts of Talladega, Clay, Calhoun and Coosa counties, but Hurst ran as a Democrat.

Hurst, now serving his fourth term, was part of a wave of Democrats who switched to the Republican party after the 2010 elections, which put control of the Alabama Legislature in the hands of the GOP for the first time since Reconstruction.

In a press release announcing his candidacy Friday, Dean said the district needs a strong pro-business advocate who will recruit new companies and strengthen the ones the area already has. He said because he started a manufacturing business that now employs 39 people, he knows how to do that.

?I know firsthand what it takes to build a business from the ground up, to create good-paying jobs and to grow our local economy,? he said in the release.

Asked about his challenger, Hurst said Dean is a nice man from a great family.

?I wish he wouldn?t, but if he chooses to run, we?ll let the voters make the decision,? he said.

Dean will have the support of one of the state?s most powerful Republican leaders.

Alabama Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh said he?ll back the challenger in the race.

Marsh, of Anniston, said he believes Dean, who?s owned BD Precision Manufacturing in Oxford since 2001, is a great businessman and understands economic development.

?I consider him a friend and truly think he would make a great legislator,? Marsh said.

State campaign finance records show Marsh's campaign contributed $10,000 to Dean?s campaign in 2010.

Dean said that if he?s elected, he hopes to focus on legislation that helps small businesses. He pointed to bills like one sponsored by Rep. Bill Roberts, R-Jasper, that would require municipalities to pay contractors within 45 days from the completion of a project.

?When they?re waiting to get their grant money, they really hold the contractors up,? he said.

Dean also said he would work to expand the Alabama Math Science and Technology Initiative and to promote more career technical training and schools.

?We need people to build stuff and to make things,? he said.

If re-elected, Hurst said, he plans on reintroducing a bill he filed during the last legislative session that would change the state?s law on sexual abuse crimes. This proposal would require offenders 21 or older who are convicted of sexaully abusing a child under 12 to agree to surgical castration before being considered for release.

?I?ll introduce it every year until it gets passed,? he said.

Hurst is also known for sponsoring the Castle Doctrine Bill, which strengthened home self-defense rights for Alabamians. The bill, signed into law, authorized citizens to shoot an intruder if the homeowner believes his life is at risk. Before the law, residents were required to retreat to the farthest room in their home.

Hurst was appointed to the Talladega County Commission in 1985 by then-governor George Wallace. Hurst served as a commissioner for eight years.

Dean is a member of both the Talladega County Republican Executive Committee and the Alabama Republican Party State Executive Committee. He?s also vice chairman for the Alabama GOP?s third congressional district.

Total War: Rome II Has Special Siege Focused Artificial Intelligence, Says Developer

The Creative Assembly has launched many Total War games where the Artificial Intelligence was a not always able to keep up with the player on a strategic level but the team promises that the situation will improve with the launch of Rome II.

Pawel Wojs, a lead battlefield artist, tells VG247 that the studio is making sure that the A.I. has a clear way of dealing with all potential situations.

He states, ?For cities it?s a real big challenge, so much so that we?ve designed a new AI for sieges. All the streets and squares and points are highlighted to the AI and they use them to flank, block and establish defense points.?

The developer says that for the Total War series the challenge to create a capable computer opponent is bigger than for other titles because the team cannot rely on scripting and on set missions.

Total War: Rome II will be launched on September 3.

U.S. factory means buyers can customize Google phone

NEW YORK (AP) - With its first smartphone designed completely in-house, Google is demonstrating one of the benefits of moving production from Asia to the U.S.: It's letting buyers customize phones to give them their own style.

Workers at the factory in Fort Worth, Texas, assemble the custom phone and Google ship it to the buyer's door within four days.

The Moto X is going on sale in about a month at all four national wireless carriers - Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile - starting at $200.

Initially, only AT&T will offer the customization option, but Google said it hopes to make it available across all carriers soon. The company will offer 18 different back covers ranging in color from "spearmint" to "cabernet," a choice of black or white fronts and seven different metallic accents for details like the volume button. That makes for 252 possible style variations of the phone.

In the fall, Google plans to offer four variants of wood for the back cover.

The Moto X is the first smartphone to be assembled in the U.S. Even though the concept of the smartphone was pioneered here and many phones have been designed in the U.S., the vast majority of phones are assembled in Asia.

With labor costs rising in China, some electronics manufacturers are looking to move manufacturing back to the U.S. Apple is moving production of its Mac Pro desktop computers to the U.S. this year.

The Fort Worth factory will let Google stamp the phone as "Made in the U.S.," but assembly is just the last step in the manufacturing process, and accounts for relatively little of the cost of a smartphone. The cost largely lies in the chips, battery and display, most of which come from Asian factories. For instance, research firm iSuppli estimates that the components of Samsung's latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S4, cost $229, while the assembly costs $8.

Google sees other value in a U.S. factory.

"Over time, by having the engineers closer to the factory floor, we'll be able to innovate faster and develop products that actually are quite interesting down the road," said Dennis Woodside, head of Google's Motorola division.

The factory is owned and run by Flextronics International Ltd., a Singapore-based contract electronics manufacturer. It's set to employ 2,000 people.

Google bought cellphone pioneer Motorola Mobility for $12.4 billion last year. While it launched some phones last year after the acquisition, those were designed while Motorola was still independent. The Moto X is the first phone that "gives you some indication of how Google is thinking of hardware," Woodside said in an interview.

Google has previously worked with other phone manufacturers to create Google-branded "Nexus" phones as launch platforms for new versions of Android.

The Moto X looks much like other smartphones, with a 4.7-inch touch screen. It comes with a no-frills implementation of Google's Android operating system, a contrast to recent phones from Samsung and HTC, which put their own stamp on the software with various add-ons.

The most unusual feature of the Moto X, apart from the customization option, is that it's always listening for its owner's voice. When it hears the phrase, "Ok, Google Now..." followed by a command like "call Bob," it will wake up from standby and execute the command -provided it understands it. Most smartphones offer voice control, but it's usually activated by pressing a button.

Rick Osterloh, the head of product management at Motorola, said the Moto X has a special chip devoted to listening, which means it doesn't have the drain the battery by keeping the main processor running all the time. It should be able to pick up the owner's voice even in the noise of a car, he said.

Google is backing the launch with a big marketing campaign, including TV ads. The Moto X represents its best chance this year to make back some of the money it spent on buying Motorola, and the $1.7 billion the division has accumulated in operating losses since the acquisition.

Motorola has become marginalized in the global smartphone market, taking just 1 percent of recent sales, according to research firm IDC. Google has slashed Motorola's workforce to 4,600 people, down from 20,300 last year.

The acquisition was motivated mainly by Google's desire to own Motorola's patent portfolio, which provides it with ammunition to defend fellow makers of Android phones from Apple's and Microsoft's patent claims. Motorola's patents haven't proved very useful so far, and the division puts Google in the uncomfortable position of competing with other companies that make Android phones.

Analysts see another value in Motorola: it gives Google a toehold in smartphones, acting as insurance against the possibility that Samsung, the dominant maker of Android phones, could jump ship to another operating system or create its own version of Android.

Virginia congressman Jim Moran, who was part of a group of members of Congress who recently toured the high-security section of Guantanamo known as Camp 7, said that the most-requested books for prisoners in that area are the ?Fifty Shades of Grey? novels.

?Rather than the Koran, the book that is requested most by the (Camp 7 detainees) is 'Fifty Shades of Grey,?? Moran said, according to the Huffington Post. ?They've read the entire series. I guess there's not much going on, these guys are going nowhere, so what the hell.?

The Camp 7 area holds prisoners known as ?high-value? detainees, which includes several men who have been charged with planning 9/11.

The military does not acknowledge Camp 7 in any way and so would not talk about Moran?s comments.

?We don't discuss our high-value detainees except in the most generic terms,? Lieutenant Colonel Samuel House told Reuters. ?Further, we do not discuss the assertions made by members of Congress.?

Before now, those in charge at Guantanamo have stated they check books or magazines for sexual content before giving them to the prisoners.?

A Reuters reporter who toured the library which provides books to the prisoners also noted the availability of ?Star Trek? novels, instructional books for getting rid of stress, ?The Hunger Games? by Suzanne Collins, and ?The Odyssey? by Homer.

How To Manage Domestic Violence In A Relationship

Not all terrible men want to remain terrible. Not all abusive men like what they do. Many can?t just control themselves at the climax of anger but you wouldn?t blame them since you have no slightest knowledge of their growing up. You don?t know their experiences; what made them who you have as a partner. Dear readers, permit me to be the advocate. In just 5 different cases I?ve witnessed, the larger ratio tells that ladies are mostly victims of the menace though there are cases of ladies hitting their men. One thing is clear ? everything that makes us who we are is a combination of too many factors or influences. After the processes are done and we are made, we get to meet another kind of us; that underwent different processes and now made. Then we seek to form a relationship. For instance, I particularly don?t like nagging: I?d prefer to be calm and work out my solutions. Then, if somewhere, a lady was raised in a home where her mother nags and rants to her father and she probably got affected by the ?virus?, and after several years we get to meet, we just might not have a balanced relationship except we help ourselves. In my write-up,?How to Save a Dying Relationship?, I made it clear that leaving our partners because of certain imperfection and making new ones isn?t the easiest way to comfort. Change, though sometimes almost impossible but inevitable if it?s sponsored by the right person. There is always a right person to make people change! The person may or may not be you. Negative habits or certain character came to be via contrary influence and with the right person; these things can still change via positive influence. If you are experiencing abuse in your relationship and at some point your partner does feel remorse for his or her action, that?s a platform for change. Now, how do you get at it?

    KNOW THE MINUS
The minus is what makes him or her incomplete to you. It?s your partner?s dark-side that makes you sad. It?s what he does that hurts you all the time ? what you think you can?t accept her doing. It?s still what we are about to address; what I believe can be influenced. You have to identify this though it?s nothing hidden. Make a target and desire to effect a gradual change in that area. Just as I always say, for everyone you meet out there, there is always something wrong with them ? something you?d easily say ?I just can?t take that? . . . but there?s someone ready to manage it and see it fade away. If what get him angry are your late hours, try to be on time. If what always gets her mad is your lack of communication, identify the minus and help it.

    AVOID THE MINUS
At this, you need to be careful of what powers the situation. What propels domestic violence in a relationship is always uncontrolled anger. Maybe he get pissed off easily, maybe she gets irritated at everything, identify it. Avoid what sponsors the situation. While you?re on the change process, try avoiding makes your partner angry. He might not like placing things on his TV set; it just might be a particular place or something not to place somewhere. He beats you, well that?s wrong, but you talk too much. Watch it! There are certain things you have identified as the cause, avoid it. Is it a kind of dress he doesn?t like you wearing? Must his dinner be ready at 7pm? Should you worship at the same place with him? These things, though little but not avoided, does gravitate into violence since each person would claim to be right. 2 years ago, I counseled a couple on a silly case that resulted into a slap on the woman?s face. Don?t be too quick to tagged fighting couples as immature, the fact is, at the face of anger, no one is matured. It just has to be restrained yet it still doesn?t make you matured until it becomes a part of you. The case of this couple looks silly but the outcome was not. In brief, what sponsored the ugly situation was a toothpaste. The man wants it pressed from the bottom, the woman have always been pressing her toothpaste from the top. That was how it started! These are little things that mean a lot.

    AVOID EXTENSIVE ARGUMENT
So many ladies find it difficult to do this. Your continuous argument does not make you right neither will it pass your message across to him. In fact, at the point of intense argument, nothing is learnt! Everyone is wrong! Try and avoid it. The endpoint of extensive argument in a relationship is always nothing-good. It could power the unexpected. You actually don?t have to take it that far before you keep quiet. When misunderstanding turns into argument, keep it short and free yourself of the unexpected. Remember, it doesn?t make you the right person. Silence is wisdom!

WITH THE RIGHT PERSON, EITHER A MAN OR A WOMAN CAN BE INFLUENCED
You could make yourself the right person or get out of his/her life. It?s just a decision! Everyone could succumb to positive influence. If you make yourself the right person, things wouldn?t be as difficult as you make it. It?s good you have a choice at this point and if you?ve got the courage to stand and change your partner, it?s possible ? just position yourself to be the right person. Sometimes, we need to carefully consider our quick judgment to present situations. How did they come about? Who made them? Your friends that is silent about their relationship problems and not telling you so that you can assume they?re having a good time? Your mother that?s probably out of her own marriage? Your father that married four wives? Who is telling you what to do? Friend, you can choose to be the right person and consider managing the situation if you?ve got the courage.

    BE PATIENT
Well, if you see this as a lost virtue, try and buy it back. The whole process of getting into a new relationship might just be equivalent to the years of your impatience. At the same time, don?t endure domestic violence because of certain benefits or gains, read?16 Raw Truth Ladies Must Know?it could be dangerous except you choose to be the right person ? it?s a sensitive and possible mission! Not every situation of domestic violence result to break-up or divorce. Some of these people actually want to change ? they were not made to be aggressive! A part in them needs to be connected to; a part that can affect their whole ? it needs to be influenced. We all got our soft spots, be patient and connect to it. Wait for or create a blissful atmosphere to discuss your worries with your partner. Make them know your pains. It?s unfortunate that feminism has brought so many troubles into relationships. A situation where a woman believes she?s equal to her man has made submission absent in relationships. Patient still works and it can as well work for you. Remember, everyone is terrible at something; it takes only the right person to make them look perfect.

Branch Campaign Web Video Yanked by Facebook

State Rep. Dan Branch, R-Dallas, has released his first web video in his campaign to become the next attorney general. Titled "Come and Take It," it highlights his desire to challenge what he calls "an overreaching federal government."

Republican attorney general candidate Dan Branch's campaign posted its first web video to Facebook on Wednesday. By Thursday, the video had been removed by Facebook administrators for allegedly violating the company's community standards.

The campaign speculates that the removal stems from objections to a part of the video in which Branch says, "I will fight for our state?s right to protect the unborn and our right to define a marriage as between one man and one woman."

The video was posted by the campaign along with a message encouraging supporters to watch it: "Please take a minute from your day to watch our debut video on why Texas must stand up and fight President Obama and those in his Administration who are trampling on our sacred Constitution."

According to Facebook's community standards, content may be removed if it is perceived as an attack on an individual or group "based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition." Content may also be removed if it is perceived as a credible threat to others.

Such standards apparently do not prevent anti-gay marriage groups like "1,000,000 Supporting Traditional Marriage" ? which, with fewer than 45,000 "likes" as of this posting, is currently a bit short of its goal ? from existing.

Facebook representatives did not respond immediately to requests for comment from the Tribune or Branch's campaign.

"Our campaign has yet to receive an explanation as to why our video was deleted," campaign manager Enrique Marquez told the Tribune via email. "We sincerely hope that Facebook did not remove based on a political bias against Texans who want to fight the Obama?Administration and who respect conservative values."

Golf roundup: Webb Simpson makes most of his first Bridgestone round

Akron, Ohio ? So much for course knowledge.

Webb Simpson, playing his first competitive round at Firestone Country Club, shot a 6-under 64 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead in the Bridgestone Invitational.

It all came down to trust.

"Well, I knew it all through my caddie [Paul Tesori], who?s been here so many years," Simpson said. "I just kind of had to listen to him."

Tesori has caddied for years on tour, for Vijay Singh and Jerry Kelly, in addition to being a pro himself.

"It?s hard for us players to listen to our caddies, but he basically showed me where to go yesterday and told me where to hit it, where the lines were, what clubs to hit," said Simpson, the 2012 U.S. Open champion. "I didn?t feel like it was my first time because he has so much experience here."

Seven-time Bridgestone winner Tiger Woods did not have to rely so much on the man on his bag, Joe LaCava, while shooting a 66. Woods has 11 top-10 finishes in his 13 starts at the course, so he clearly knows where to go.

Still, he needed his counsel from time to time.

"I hit a lot of good shots. I had a really good feel for the distance today, and Joey and I really read the wind right today," Woods said after his best opening round at the course since another 66 spurred him to a one-shot victory in 2005. "We changed a lot of shots out there, and we both had a really good handle on what we were doing feel-wise with the wind."

Henrik Stenson was alone in second with a 65. Defending champion Keegan Bradley, Ryan Moore and Chris Wood, another first-time entrant, matched Woods at 66.

Women?s British Open ? Wearing a black rain suit and a soft smile, Inbee Park looked calm as ever standing before the imposing Royal & Ancient clubhouse before she teed off.

Only after her unsteady round of 3-under 69 did Park reveal perhaps the biggest surprise at St. Andrews.

Park wound up three shots behind Morgan Pressel and Camilla Lennarth of Sweden, a solid start to what should be a fascinating week at the home of golf.

Her pursuit of history looked more like a high-speed chase when the 25-year-old South Korean made six birdies in 10 holes. Three poor tee shots, two three-putt bogeys and one double bogey from a pot bunker on the back nine made her realize there?s a reason no golfer has ever won four majors in a single year.

Threat closes US embassies in Muslim world for day

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The United States is shuttering its embassies and consulates throughout the Muslim world on Sunday after receiving an unspecified threat, officials said.

State Department officials said Thursday that they were taking action out of an "abundance of caution."

Spokeswoman Marie Harf cited information indicating a threat to U.S. facilities overseas and said some diplomatic facilities may stay closed for more than a day.

Other U.S. officials said the threat was in the Muslim world, where Sunday is a workday. American diplomatic missions in Europe, Latin America and many other places are closed on Sunday.

Those officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

The State Department issued a major warning last year informing American diplomatic facilities across the Muslim world about potential violence connected to the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Dozens of American installations were besieged by protest over an anti-Islam video made by an American resident.

In Benghazi, Libya, the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed when militants assaulted a diplomatic post. The administration no longer says that attack was related to the demonstrations.

Arcadia School Board takes 'no action' to reinstate fired coach

ARCADIA - The Arcadia Unified School District's Board of Education on Wednesday took no action after reviewing the school district's decision to fire James O'Brien as head cross country coach of Arcadia High School.

The board called a special meeting for 7:30 a.m. Wednesday to discuss "employee discipline/dismissal/release and appointment" in closed session.

O'Brien and a few other supporters were given 15 minutes to address the board before it went into closed session.

"After reviewing the facts, we have decided to take no action," said board President Cung Nguyen, when the board reconvened in public session at 10:41 a.m.

Superintendent Joel Shawn will release a statement describing what the board's decision means within 24 hours, Nguyen said. That statement had not been posted as of Wednesday afternoon.

"We clearly heard what you said this morning as well as all the members of the public that addressed the board at the July 23 meeting," said Nguyen, referring to the meeting where more than 50 people spoke about the coach and

urged the board to overturn the district's decision to fire O'Brien.

O'Brien engaged Nguyen in discussion at the meeting as to what "no action" means, but did not get clarification.

"Does no action mean that you are leaving put what you've already done, in other words, you have Coach Michael Feraco as head coach of the boys' cross country for this upcoming season?" O'Brien asked.

"I'm sorry, I can't speak to items that aren't specifically on the agenda," Nguyen said.

The board members declined to address the media after the meeting.

Coaches are appointed on a yearly basis. O'Brien was told the day after school ended in June he would not be returning for his 18th year as the cross-country team's head coach.

"It makes me feel terrible," said O'Brien. "It makes me feel like they just cut my guts out. I'm so saddened by it. I thought that maybe they would show a little courage, but they showed they don't have the gravitas to do that."

The only reason the district has made publicly as to why O'Brien was let go was it wanted to "move in a different direction."

O'Brien has said the superintendent told him in a private meeting he was let go because he spray painted Xs on broken lockers so students wouldn't use them because students were having items stolen from the lockers, thereby vandalizing school property.

He also has said he believes the school district's administration begrudges him for winning a grievance he filed against the district. The district had reprimanded O'Brien in 2010 for bringing female runners along with the boys' team to a summer training camp program in Mammoth Lakes. O'Brien filed a grievance and won in 2011.

The fired coach said he will look into taking legal action against the district.

"I will fight for these kids every step of the way," O'Brien said. "I'm not laying down and I'm not going away."

O'Brien, 60, remains a physical education teacher at Arcadia High School. He has led the team to two state and two national championships in the past three years.

The feeling among O'Brien's supporters Wednesday was subdued.

Sergio Gonzalez, 19, who graduated from Arcadia High in 2012, said there are plans to start a recall of some of the school board members, but they are waiting to begin the effort until the public statement is released.

"It was expected, but, at the same time, maybe people can be humane and understand there is more to a program than just these personal feelings as to some things that have happened," said Gonzalez. "It's really a shame."

"I'm really devastated," said Bryan Ngo, 17, who is going into his senior year at Arcadia High. "I want my coach back because he's helped get me and my team so far. We're trying to fight as hard as we can to get him back."

O'Brien's supporters noted that the early morning meeting, where one member teleconferenced in from Vancouver, Canada, was posted late Tuesday afternoon.

"We just can't get any information out of these folks," said parent Michael Wenslow. "They keep saying the decision is in the best interest of the student body, but they haven't yet been able to give us any specific example of how any member of the student body benefits."

Yankees beat Dodgers 3-0 helped by Ellis' error

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? With two strikes against him, pinch-hitter Lyle Overbay wanted to make sure he wasn't getting a fastball on the next pitch.

Having abandoned his game plan by being overly aggressive on those first two pitches, Overbay got what he was looking for with two outs in the ninth inning.

He singled on a 1-2 pitch from Paco Rodriguez to help the New York Yankees beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0 Wednesday night.

Overbay, who drove in both New York runs in a 3-2 loss on Tuesday, scored Robinson Cano, who reached on a fielder's choice groundout.

"My game plan was to make sure the slider stayed up in the zone and I didn't do that," Overbay said. "He finally hung one with that last pitch. Hopefully he makes a mistake and he did."

The Yankees added two more runs on an error by Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis, whose two-out RBI single drove in the winning run Tuesday.

Ronald Belisario (4-6) got two outs in the ninth inning, but took the loss. He walked Derek Jeter and pinch-hitter Ichiro Suzuki, who both scored after Belisario was relieved by Rodriguez.

Suzuki and Overbay scored when Ellis dropped a fly ball by Jayson Nix in shallow right field. Yasiel Puig came running in as Ellis was tracking the ball with his back to the rookie, whose left hand struck Ellis' glove as the ball dropped.

"It was just a popup in a weird spot and I dropped it," Ellis said. "I heard him at the last minute, but it was too late to get out of the way. It's a play that we have all the time. It's hard to hear out there."

Boone Logan (3-2) got the win in relief.

Mariano Rivera retired the side in order while striking out two in the ninth to earn his 34th save in 36 chances in his farewell season.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly was ejected in the ninth for arguing a checked swing call on Overbay.

Former Dodgers pitcher Hiroki Kuroda and current Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw dueled for much of the game, with neither allowing a run. Both gave up five hits ? all singles.

Kuroda struck out eight and walked one in seven innings in returning to Dodger Stadium for the first time since 2011.

"It was a little bit strange, but once the game started I was able to get into a rhythm," Kuroda said through a Japanese translator. "The Dodgers have a great lineup and I needed to be on my 'A' game."

Kershaw struck out five and walked none in eight innings to lower his major league-leading ERA to 1.87.

Jeter went 0 for 7 with a walk as the Yankees gained a split in the two-game series.

"We've been battling since I've been here," he said. "Hopefully we can build on this."

Both teams had scoring chances in the seventh and eighth innings.

The Yankees had runners on first and second with two outs in the eighth when Brett Gardner flied out to left field for the third out.

The Dodgers had runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh before Skip Schumaker struck out swinging to end the inning.

NOTES: Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez was scheduled to play a minor league rehab game in Tampa, Fla., on Thursday, but Yankees manager Joe Girardi had no timetable for his return to the team. ... Yankees OF Curtis Granderson was expected to travel to San Diego on Thursday and be activated for Friday night's series opener against the Padres. ... The Dodgers gifted Rivera with a custom fishing pole and a $10,000 donation to his planned church in New York. Rivera met with a select group of Dodgers employees to talk baseball as part of his farewell tour. ... The Dodgers acquired C Drew Butera from Minnesota for either a player to be named or cash considerations. Butera was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque. ... Celebrities at the game included Kobe Bryant and LL Cool J in Magic Johnson's box, Christina Aguilera, Samuel L. Jackson, Billy Crystal, Penny Marshall, Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid, and Dallas Cowboys teammates Jason Whitten and DeMarcus Ware. ... The two games against the Yankees drew combined sellout crowds of 105,460, making it the highest attended two-game set at Dodger Stadium since 107,851 saw two games against Seattle on Aug. 30-31, 1997.

    Featurepics.com / Featurepics.com

Beware the Obamacare cliff! Working more could ultimately mean thousands of dollars less for you under a quirk in the new health-care law going into effect this fall. This could prompt some people to cut back on their hours to avoid losing money.

Be careful you don't fall off the Obamacare "cliff" when the boss asks you to put in some overtime.

Working more could ultimately mean thousands of dollars less for you under a quirk in the new health-care law going into effect this fall. This could prompt some people to cut back on their hours to avoid losing money.

"Working more can actually leave you worse off," the price-comparison site ValuePenguin.com notes in a new analysis.

"It's sort of an absurd scenario," said Jonathan Wu, ValuePenguin.com's co-founder. "It's something for people to be aware of."

In that scenario, an individual or family whose annual income surpasses maximums set by the federal government?if only by $1?will totally lose subsidies available to buy health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

    (Read more: Obamacare fraud?)

The loss of those subsidies in some cases will mean that people potentially would have been better off financially if they had worked less during the year, Wu said. And they then would have to work significantly more to make up for the lost subsidy.

"I think they'd be surprised to see how drastic it is," said Wu. "I'd be kind of shocked to see if I make $100 less (in total income each year), I get all these benefits, but if I make $100 more, I get nothing."

"You basically don't want to fall in that hole," said Wu, adding that he believed contractors and others with more control over their incomes would be apt to adjust their hours worked to avoid the subsidy cliff.

He also said that because of lower insurance premiums often offered to younger people, the effect will more likely be seen by older people. But "you will see it across all age groups" in the seven states including New York and Vermont where insurance premiums are either barred from being affected by age, or restricted from being dramatically affected, he said.

Under the ACA, federal subsidies in the form of tax credits to buy insurance on new state health insurance exchanges will be available to millions of people who can start enrolling on those exchanges Oct. 1. The subsidies are available to people or families whose incomes total 400 percent above the federal poverty level or less, and are designed to cap their insurance premiums at 9.5 percent of their total income.

For a single person, that FPL income maximum is $45,960 per year. The maximums are adjusted upward for couples and families until maxing out at $94,200 for a family of four.

(Read more: Doctors skeptical, confused about Obamacare)

Under a scenario that ValuePenguin.com identified, a couple in Ohio, both age 50, would be eligible for subsidies worth $3,452 to purchase a so-called silver insurance plan?a moderately priced level of benefits under the ACA's scheme?that costs $9,346 annually if they made up to $62,040 per year.

But if they made just $1 more than that, they would lose the subsidy. Wu noted that the couple then would have to earn at least $65,492 to make up for the lost subsidy.

In New York, a family of three whose annual income totals $78,120, would pay $12,784 for the second-lower-priced silver plan on that state's insurance exchange. After getting a $5,363 tax credit, the family's net cost for the insurance would be $7,421.

But if the family earned even slightly more than $78,120, they would have to pay the entire $12,784 for the insurance because they then wouldn't qualify for the subsidy.

To make up for that, the family's annual income would have to reach $83,483, Wu said.

The stark effect of peoples' age in determining their risk from the subsidy cliff is seen in two examples from Connecticut.

(Read more: This could put Obamacare in the ER)

There, Wu said, a 27-year-old single man would pay $3,636 annually for the second-cheapest silver plan?less than the $4,366 cap on insurance premiums for individuals earning $45,960 or less annually. That person would not be eligible for subsidies, and thus would see no disincentive in working more hours.

But the annual premiums for a 50-year-old Connecticut couple buying that plan would be $12,468. If their combined incomes were $62,040 or less, they would receive $6,575 in subsidies to offset the cost.

However, if their income was more than that, they would lose the subsidies, leaving them out of pocket $6,575. They then would have to earn at least $68,615 to make up for that lost subsidy, Wu said.

No word yet if Bulger will testify at own trial

BOSTON (AP) ? A retired FBI agent told jurors in James "Whitey" Bulger's racketeering trial that the mother of one of defendant's alleged victims suspected his longtime partner in crime, not Bulger, may have killed her daughter.

Wednesday's testimony came as prosecutors pushed for an answer about whether 83-year-old Bulger would take the stand himself.

Bulger faces charges connected to allegations that he participated in 19 slayings in the 1970s and 80s while leading the Winter Hill Gang, Boston's Irish mob.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Fred Wyshak told U.S. District Judge Denise Casper the government "deserves to know" if Bulger will take the stand, and that his lawyers haven't revealed their plans.

The judge said she'd take up the issue at the end of the day. When testimony wrapped up in the afternoon, she held a private sidebar with the attorneys and then adjourned for the day without any sign of a resolution on the matter.

Some family members of Bulger's alleged victims said they're eager to see him take the stand.

Tommy Donahue, whose late father Michael prosecutors count among Bulger's victims, said Bulger could salvage some of his reputation if he exposed corruption in law enforcement.

"He's going to get 'guilty' on probably every single charge that's on him. He doesn't have any choice if he wants to try to save any name he has left. He has to take the stand," Donahue said.

Steve Davis, whose late sister Debra is among those whom prosecutors claim Bulger killed, also suggested the defendant could give an insider's view of law enforcement corruption.

"If he chooses to bring down the corruption of the law enforcement locals, the state, the feds, I'd like to hear that," Davis said.

Testimony Wednesday from retired FBI agent James Crawford touched on Debra Davis' slaying.

He said Davis' mother asked him to look into Debra's disappearance and suspected Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi ? whom her 26-year-old daughter had been dating ? may have killed her.

Flemmi is Bulger's former partner and previously testified that Bulger killed Debra Davis. Outside the courtroom, Steve Davis said he believed Bulger and Flemmi "were tied into it together" when it came to his sister's 1981 death.

Crawford also testified that a female informant told him before Edward "Brian" Halloran's slaying in 1982 that Bulger and Flemmi knew he was snitching on them to the FBI and Flemmi planned to kill Halloran.

Crawford said he didn't write up a report on the informant's tip because he promised confidentiality, but passed her information to a supervisor and a fellow agent. He said he learned days later about the shooting deaths of Halloran and bystander Michael Donahue and sought out a different boss to talk about it.

Under cross-examination, Crawford identified that boss as Robert Fitzpatrick, the former FBI supervisor whom prosecutors tried to discredit Tuesday citing inconsistencies in testimony from other trials and accusing him of embellishing to sell copies of his book about Bulger.

Also Wednesday, Patrick Nee, a former Bulger associate whom Flemmi linked to the deaths of Halloran and Donahue, came to court as a would-be defense witness. He left without testifying after his lawyer conferred with the judge. Prosecutors previously said Nee would probably invoke his right against self-incrimination if called.

The defense did call retired FBI supervisor Fred Davis Jr., who described inspecting Bulger's thin informant file in 1979 and recommending its closure.

"My opinion was that it was worthless," he said.

Davis also spoke of a culture of paranoia within the Boston FBI office, where agents were nervous that other agents were leaking information from files.

The witness agreed during cross-examination that Bulger's informant file could have been thin if the FBI closed it while investigating him for a crime, before reopening it later.

The defense insists Bulger wasn't an informant and that a FBI corrupt agent attributed informant information to him.
