Crucial outs v4 SSD for solid-state storage on a budget

Crucial outs v4 SSD for solidstate storage on a budget

Solid-state drives cost just a fraction of what they did a few years ago, but with prices that can still exceed $1,000, you could hardly label them as cheap. Crucial still aims to put solid-state storage within reach of those on a budget, however, releasing its 2.5-inch v4 drive with pricing that starts at $50. That entry-level model will net you just 32 gigs of storage -- hardly a lust-worthy sum -- but the series is also available in configurations of 64GB ($70), 128GB ($100) and 256GB ($190), offering read speeds of up to 230 MB/s and write speeds of up to 190 MB/s with SATA 2-capable desktops and laptops. The v4 joins Crucial's higher-end m4, which offers much speedier performance and Ultrabook-friendly configurations to boot. You'll find full details in the PR after the break.

A True Celebration of Early Childhood Education | CAJE

On August 13, the Jewish community will come together to celebrate the accomplishments of four years of intensive work to grow the quality of nine Denver/Boulder Jewish Early Childhood Education Programs.

The Colorado Jewish ECE Initiative was born in 2007 with the creation of a Steering Committee to guide a long range strategic plan focused on promoting Jewish identity in children and deepening family connections with the Jewish?community, improving the quality in ECE centers, and expanding educational options for families with young children. In 2008 a full-time Early Childhood Specialist position was developed at CAJE to spearhead the Colorado Jewish ECE?Initiative, and in mid-2012 the position evolved into an Early Childhood Education Director position, which Judi Morosohk has held since its inception.

Elements of the program include on-site coaching and mentoring, leadership training, educational seminars, implementation of ?Seamless Judaism? ? integrating Jewish values in meaningful ways into the daily life of ECE?classrooms, contemporary educational approaches such as constructivist early childhood education as demonstrated by the schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy and Principles of Excellence, a framework valuing the importance of relationships,?visioning, learning community, shared leadership, and quality environments.

On August 13, Dr. Michael Ben-Avie, a researcher from Yale University?s School of Medicine, will share the findings of his evaluation of the project and which aspects of the work led to the best results. His evaluation reveals the following outcomes of the first four years of work:

  • Better teaching in ECE Centers
  • Better learning environments for children
  • Better integration of Judaism into curricula
  • Better connections between families and Jewish life

At the celebration schools will display documentation of their learning through photographs, children?s work and teacher reflection and all centers will be recognized for their accomplishments. Although there is still much work to be done, there is also much to celebrate that has resulted from the combined efforts of directors, educators, families, coaches, and institution leadership.

With the approval of our grant request we look forward to the continued collaboration which ultimately benefits young children and families in our community!

Coastal Living Ultimate Beach House 2012 in Rosemary Beach ...

Coastal Living Ultimate Beach House 2012 in Rosemary Beach

Like other homes in the neighborhood, the Ultimate Beach House has minimal landscaping -- native oak trees and grasses, and pine needle mulch in place of a water- and fertilizer-hungry lawn -- making maintenance simple

While traveling to visit family earlier this month, I got a chance to tour the Coastal Living Magazine Ultimate Beach House 2012, which is in Rosemary Beach. Rosemary Beach is on Florida?s Emerald Coast, just west of Panama City Beach. It?s a charming neighborhood along 30A, a scenic route that strings beach towns together along the Gulf of Mexico in Walton County. So it?s a great place to showcase the ideal beach house ? right where people vacation with family and friends.

That?s how I think of this Ultimate Beach House ? as a place you would share with your hug-mates while you take advantage of the beach, restaurants and shops that are a short walk away. It?s big enough for a large family or a few smaller ones, with four bedrooms, two bunk rooms that sleep an additional 10 people, five bathrooms, indoor and outdoor kitchens, and plenty of room to hang out and have fun. Find the floor plan here.

The Ultimate Beach House is open for tours ($15 per person payable at the door and benefiting charity) Wednesdays through Sundays until Oct. 7.

Let me share my photos and impressions of the Ultimate Beach House with you!

Coastal Living Magazine's Ultimate Beach House is in Rosemary Beach on Florida's Emerald Coast. And no, that's not my stroller in the picture. I saw several families touring this idea house!

Let?s look at the main, shared parts of the home first. Past the oval foyer is what some people call the great room, divided into smaller areas with different functions.

In the great room, the dining area with both bench and chair seating is casual. The table reminds me of a surf board. (You can see the office nook off to the side.)

The great room includes areas for cooking, eating and gathering with family and friends. Colors are neutral, with shades of green here and there.

A cozy chair

This sitting area near the fireplace is tucked in a bit away from the expanse of the great room. I love the velvet-covered table with nailhead accents.

Imagine relaxing here just inside the patio area -- in inclement weather, of course

The kitchen is divided into two rooms. I?m not sure I like that personally, but if you are sharing the house with a lot of people, it might make sense.

The sink and stove/oven area of the kitchen is at one end of the great room. Oh, the meals I could cook here!

The open room, together with the bar seating just on the other side of the kitchen sink, make entertaining and casual meals or snacks really convenient

Slide-out drawers in the kitchen keep cooking staples handy

I'm suddenly feeling the need to wash my hands

The refrigerator and freezer are at the end of the second room of the kitchen, where there is plenty of room for storing dinnerware and pantry supplies, plus additional food prep work space

A place to kick back and watch the game or morning cartoons? Of course! The basket-top table is fun.

Upstairs, there are lots of ways to have fun.

The upstairs "rec room" includes a cozy seating area -- I love the wall of artwork featuring wildlife you might see in Florida!

Imagine a cozy, out-of-the-way place to read a book or text a friend

Table tennis, anyone?

The home theater is a dream, with surround sound and stadium seating in long, comfy easy chairs

A snack room next to the home theater holds cold drinks and tasty treats

Now let?s look at the bedrooms and bathrooms. Each bedroom has its own private bathroom, which is especially nice when you?re sharing a home with others you?re vacationing with.

This downstairs bedroom, like the others in the Ultimate Beach House, is traditional but cozy

The beautiful fabric on this headboard and the cushy pillows are calling me....

The knotted rope used to hang the bathroom mirror is a great nautical touch

Each bedroom is designed with its own unique furnishings

I just loved this bedroom mirror, which looks like it's framed in sea urchins, reminding you that you're not far from the Gulf of Mexico

A giant clam shell decoration in the bathroom serves as storage for pretty bath bombs -- another reminder of the beach

Bright and fresh!

Showers in the Ultimate Beach House feature built-in computerized controls

This downstairs bedroom in the back of the house is light and calming

The look of the traditional decor is softened by the casual pillow ticking fabric used to cover the bed's headboard

I loved the bedroom's pale-wood chest and the seashell-covered box -- I had a box like that when I was a girl!

The bathrooms all make good use of space and include square toilets and fixtures by Kohler

This bedroom upstairs invites people to try out the cooling memory foam bed mattress by Serta

More bathroom inspiration -- this home has five of them

In addition to full bedrooms, there are two bunk rooms ? one more boyish, one more girly.

The downstairs bunk room gives just enough room for sleeping -- or maybe not sleeping, if you fill the room with a bunch of vacationing kids!

The upstairs bunk room near the top of the stairs can sleep six -- imagine the slumber party fun!

The door to the patio area is just off the kitchen and next to the boyish bunk room.

When the weather is nice, cook and eat outside on the patio, located just off the kitchen's back door near the garage/driveway

The patio area, enclosed by the house and a wall, showcases the lap pool. I love how the lounge chairs stand right in the water.

The Ultimate Beach House has a private patio Shangri-La

Baskets on hooks just inside the patio entrance are great for storing towels and using as catch-alls

Quite a home! I think there are some great ideas here for a beach vacation home.

For details on the house, check out the Ultimate Beach House site at Coastal Living, and look for a full feature about the home in Coastal Living?s October issue.

Wit and Wisdom of an Engineer: Field Force Data Visualization ...

Additional information relating to the previous blog - -

EPRI
3412 Hillview Ave.
Palo Alto, CA, 94304
USA

Press release date: June 14, 2012

Background Utilities struggle with inaccurate data, lack of standards and vendor "lock-in," which can prevent the cost effective use of their technology investment. Data exists in disparate systems, inaccessible to both the operations center and field personnel. Mobile computer power is wasted displaying out-of-date or irrelevant data. Often, data is not used because it is not available in the vendor specific software that is loaded on the mobile computing device. In short, the investment made in IT by utilities has yet to reach its full potential.

As utilities begin to integrate systems that previously operated with little or no data interconnection, it becomes easier to link together related data. Creating access to that data in a visual way could be of significant benefit to utilities. A standards based IT architecture is needed for the visualization of data and the use of visual data in the decision making process. This can result in the creation of powerful diagnostic and management tools that can utilize interconnected data and make it accessible to utility professionals to better understand the network and the context of any unexpected behavior.

Industry Opportunity Emerging technologies in the mobile computing field could be used to create a mobile integrated data access platform. One such emerging technology that exists in other industries is augmented reality. Augmented reality is believed to have been coined in 1990 by Thomas Caudell, who worked at Boeing, and is a combination of computer generated elements such as geospatial data, sensory input, video and other graphics that are overlaid on a direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment. The reality that is displayed to the user by a device has additional context aware information added (or augmented) to it. Augmenting reality is a way to enhance the user's current perception of reality. A familiar example of augmented reality is superimposing the line of scrimmage and the 10 yard line-to-gain colored lines that are now commonly displayed during televised football games in the United States.

Developing New Technology The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is developing data visualization technology for the utility engineering and operations professionals. Using tablet and smart phone technologies, real-time data from the internal magnetometer and 3-axis gyroscopic are combined to stabilize and provide a more accurate "compass" when a user points the mobile device at distribution pole or at transmission and distribution conductors. Global Positioning System (GPS) and Common Information Model (CIM) messages serve to locate and retrieve segmented GIS data from a utility GIS database and the device renders the GIS data segments on screen as a map information overlay from the camera image. An example of this would be seeing a pole structure symbol through the camera while the screen displays the camera image with the one line circuit drawing overlaid.

This data serves as an overlay on live camera images that incorporates the data from multiple sources and wraps the information into a picture of real images and enhanced data overlays. This augmented live camera data can serve to present data overlays such as the maintenance history of a power line device, fault location data, asset ID information, and outage management information in a concise form at the specific location. Data can be hidden or displayed on screen as needed. The rendered information links to other systems in the utility back office such as the outage management system (OMS), work management system, asset management system, document management system and other systems and databases. By utilizing the touch screen capabilities of the tablet platform, actions may be performed that link the user in the field to the capabilities in the back office via further CIM messaging.

Illustrating How This Technology Can Be Applied To illustrate how this can work, consider an engineer or technician working in the field that has been assigned to assess the condition and performance of distribution assests in a specific neighborhood. Upon arriving at a location, the GIS and magnetometer (compass) built into a tablet would identify the location and by holding up the tablet, would allow them to see in real-time a video of the area with data overlays on the view and a single line diagram and on the map. Using this interface this person could navigate through all the data for a transformer or switching device, identify its location in the GIS and a single-line; be shown the down-stream circuit on a map, query into its asset history, maintenance history, manufacturer information and catalogue. They could also query as to the state of a switch, execute a switching order, display maintenance procedures, identify premises with outages, automatically tag devices, create work orders, etc. This could all be possible with a properly integrated data environment and accurate GIS data.

The mobile device would use its computational power to render segments of the GIS data base much the same way as games do today. These segments of the GIS database can be sent wirelessly or held in local mobile device memory for image rendering. High speed wireless data coupled with CIM commands allow a variety of database information to be interfaced for a fast, seamless visualization of the data on the mobile device. Evolving technology advances already allow higher wireless data transmission speeds for communication to mobile devices. These technologies, coupled with the rapid development of mobile device capabilities will largely overcome the obstacles that have plagued mobile computing in the past: inferior performances (CPU, memory), connectivity (latency, bandwidth, reliability) and usability (small screen, uncomfortable input controls).

As a first step in bringing this technology to reality in utility environments, EPRI is developing a field force data visualization tool on an iOS based device (such as an iPad or iPhone) which utilizes the Common Information Model (CIM) for messaging. The advantages of such a platform include: ? Cost - this platform can be considerably cheaper than a tough-book style laptop. ? Simplicity - upgrades to iOS devices are simple and can be done in the field. ? Communication - iOS devices typically switch from Wi-Fi to cellular communications and back without issue. ? Cloud data and computing capabilities - large amounts of data could be securely transferred directly between devices even over large geographic distances.

Potential for the Industry The impact of this technology on utility field operations could be significant. The cost of automating field operations could be greatly reduced because even when ruggedized, the tablet platform would still be substantially less costly than traditional ruggedized laptops. Operational costs could be reduced because the application on the tablet would replace a number of seat licenses for the individual applications that are currently needed. Finally, operational efficiencies could be increased as work such as maintenance, switching, design, storm damage and outage restoration workflows would be performed from a common platform that would link the correct data with the correct systems.

Satellite Mobile phone Sales | Acosta Network Tech Inc.

Geostationary satellite tv for pc phones compared to civilian employ satellite mobile phonesbr /br /Although satellite tv for pc telephones can be used as geostationary orbit connecting the entire world with simply three or four satellite, the most popular private system is Inmarsat. Geostationary satellite tv for pc phone takes a large antenna system with regard to signal receipt and transmission a href=http://www.rentasatphone.com.auSatellite phone sales/a. This makes the entire system inconveniently huge and impacts mobility and ease of use, fairly adversely. Civilian satellite mobile phones such Inmarsat, is fairly handy to make use of and does not need such a huge system of antenna. Nonetheless, every satellite tv for pc hand held telephone system suffers from a huge disadvantage which they need a apparent link with the night sky and are not used inside a building. Here your need will be those of external antenna and it helps make the whole method quite cumbersome and costly also.br /br /Satellite mobile phones using Low Earth Orbit engineeringbr /br /These satellite tv for pc phones contain the rare advantage of covering the world without line and with no gaps. Low Earth Orbit satellite go around the earth with a very high rate but with lower elevation with an orbital period of around 90 minutes. The elevation at which these satellites move are anywhere between 600 one,150 Kms. The original a couple of LEO systems are Iridium and Gobalstar could not become popular.br /br /Satellite mobile phones modelsbr /br /Satellite phones are already quite popular throughout films and stage shows. They are available in a variety of models and come from divergent manufacturers. The most popular ones are Globalstar, Iridium, and Inmarsat. A possible user do not need to always purchase one since satellite tv for pc phones on rental are also available. Satellite mobile phones can also be obtained by buying online a href=http://www.rentasatphone.com.ausatellite phone plans/a. The majority of the providers likewise have the system of same day shipping or front door delivery, because preferred by absolutely free themes. In addition they provide attractive promises to gain customer service like absolutely no deposits, an additional free battery power, and endless use with no bundled minutes, fastest shipping, and many more. One example is the Worldwide Cell Phone leasing package available from some, that provides connectivity for you to 130 nations with heartbeat rate payment ranging from Fifth 89 cents for you to $1.69.br /br /Transition from commercial to client usebr /br /At the beginning of the one hundred year, satellite mobile phones were nevertheless to make a large headway and quite a few of the companies were having difficulties for self-sufficiency. Probably the most pertinent basis for such a predicament was the top payable expense and high you?ll pay pulse charge. For example the Globalstar mobile phone expense around $1,2 hundred and the heartbeat rate you?ll pay was $2.Forty nine per minute. Inmarsat seemed to be providing the bulky baggage set with $3,000 for you to $10,000. As a result, initially the users of satellite tv for pc phones have been the Government and large business houses. They employed the satellite tv for pc phone companies to tactic remote locations having not one other method of communication. Even rental charges in Late 2001 were a great unfriendly $159 a week with contact charges with $3.99 for each minute. However, in the last five years there was a sea difference in this area. The 1st popular services of satellite tv for pc phone system was provided by Iridum using a cost of $1,995 or same was available on rent at $19.98 per month. The pulse rate payment was a fair $1.99 which rates have been much lower compared to earlier prices charged with regard to satellite mobile phones.br /br /The initial procedures in transition from commercial for you to consumer primarily based satellite mobile phones took place throughout 2001 with all the launching of Iridium World Information Services. It provided for dial-up throughput of 2.Four kbps and direct Web data throughput with about 10 kbps. Any package using a pulse charge payment of 99 dollars per minute seemed to be introduced. As well as the most important inclusion was your prepaid voice service at an average pulse charge of $1.09 per minute. The actual satellite voice service, originally popped for Federal government only, has become ready to accept the private customers. Today, companies like Globalstar has reduced your satellite phone costs through 80% of its expense in Late 2001.br /br /The user situationbr /br /However, the greatest user until date of satellite mobile phones is the Military. Today, Globalstar gives handheld satellite tv for pc phone with $645, and units are available at a lower price of $599. The actual 2006 Inmarsat has voice and speed information service. Nevertheless the cost is greater at $1,Six hundred and fifty, with the edge that it provides for BGAN services unavailable till currently. This technology eradicates the necessity to employ terminals in which earlier cost a customer nearly $8,000. The main advantage of this technology is apparent digital voice and high rate data transfer. Slowly, the popularity of satellite mobile phones started growing and the average revenue selection marked with 30% increase for that industries included. With a 60% pitfall in the rental fees for satellite tv for pc phones, the consumer strength has multiplied into virtual thousands and thousands. The expanding consciousness among prospective customers about the ease of transmission of data and voice through the satellite services has resulted in further expansion of the satellite tv for pc phones industry in the United States. The growth has been indicating an upwards trend with regard to last 5yrs.br /br /Dawn of a new era throughout wireless marketing communicationsbr /br /Recently the Federal Communications Payment (FCC), has granted expert to offer supplementary terrestrial component companies (ATC) in favor of Globalstar. As a result, the Globalstar is eligible to set up ATC base stations and cell terminals. Globalstar today provides a tiny lightweight twin mode phone with the two satellite and ATC modes. It uses 12 MHZ of the company?s 1.6 /2.4 Gigahertz satellite stereo frequencies for that terrestrial wireless services. The advantage are these claims allows the device to work throughout dual setting. Inside a car the phone set will work throughout ATC or terrestrial setting and outside it will operate in satellite setting. The first altered dual setting demonstration is made in Ny in Two thousand and two. Even when the local telephone national infrastructure stands disrupted, the satellite tv for pc phone system offers seamless marketing communications. However, your Globalstar satellite telephone system is not without having limitations. It cannot be used as being a common cellular phone in a building or in a car or truck. The inventors have reached search of a handheld phone that has absolutely no dead areas and functions everywhere. An additional requirement throughout present day circumstances is including broadband information and variable media software to seamless strata of wi-fi communication. Nonetheless, that is in the distant upcoming, while the existing satellite voice service has to be employed outdoors together with at least 80% look at the sky or perhaps using an exterior antenna.br /br /Use of satellite mobile phone different from each otherbr /br /Ordinarily you require the same form of satellite mobile phones in total group to talk properly. There may be no use of two types of satellite tv for pc phones to some extent. Otherwise the machine of interaction would be in the round with regards to way. By way of example calling the Globalstar phone from an Iridium phone will delivered the call for you to first your Iridium constellation and then for an Iridium gateway. This will go via a land line for the Globalstar gateway. Sometimes the required entry gets disrupted and issues are experienced in communication. Globalstar includes a constellation of Forty-eight Low Planet Orbiting satellite. It handles 120 nations and has normally the one of the best transmission quality. Iridium includes a constellation of 66 Low Planet Orbiting satellite and a planetary coverage. The Inmarsat employ portable devices with Geo-stationary satellite. This set up is quite simple and user friendly.br /br /Satellite phones with regard to emergenciesbr /br /Presently of tornados, terrorism, and strength failure, everyone should be in preparedness to address any kind of unforeseen urgent matters. The preparedness is most important since the local phones tend to die down just as needed most to pull up quickly. There is no such problem with satellite tv for pc phones. Satellite telephones are not subject to vagaries of nature which enable it to be used whenever any where without difficulty and this will have a real worth during the worst of urgent matters.br /br /

Two dead, over 100,000 without power after fierce storms

ELMIRA, New York (Reuters) - Two people were dead and more than 100,000 homes and businesses in New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania were without electricity Friday morning after severe thunderstorms swept through the region late Thursday.

The storms spawned a tornado that touched down in Elmira, New York, toppling trees and tearing off roofs, the National Weather Service said.

Officials in Pennsylvania and New York reported two storm-related deaths.

A woman who was camping in Genesee, Pennsylvania, near the New York State line, was killed when she took refuge from the storm in her car and a tree then fell on it, John Hetrick, director of emergency services for Potter County, said.

In New York City, a 61-year-old man in Brooklyn's Cobble Hill neighborhood was killed when scaffolding at a church collapsed on him as the storm passed through near 8 p.m., police said.

"It's possible that lightning struck the top of the roof, causing some bricks to fall on top of the scaffolding, causing the scaffolding to fall on top of the victim," a police spokesman said.

In Elmira, the city's east side took the biggest hit from the tornado. In one four-block neighborhood, most homes had trees toppled upon them, street signs were bent in half and tree trunks had debris wrapped around them. Several cars were crushed by downed trees.

One two-story brick building had most of the second story torn off in the storm.

On Friday morning, most power remained out for the city's 29,000 residents.

Meteorologists said 70-mile-per-hour (113-kph) winds were reported in parts of Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma.

As the storms sent black, menacing clouds rolling across some cities, hail ranging from the size of a dime to a quarter fell in some areas of Pennsylvania, AccuWeather.com said.

Pennsylvania accounted for a majority of those still without power, with more than 85,000 customers in the dark early Friday, according to electric companies serving the region.

Roughly 34,000 people in New York were without power, most of them in the southern tier region near Elmira, according to NYSEG. About 13,500 customers in eastern Ohio were still offline, according to AEP Ohio.

The storms formed along a cold front stretching from the Northeast into the Ohio Valley, bringing the threat of damaging winds, hail and tornadoes, according to the Weather Channel.

The storm activity forced the cancellation of over 900 flights on Thursday, according to FlightAware, a Texas-based company that tracks the status of flights. The highest number of cancellations was at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

How LinkedIn Groups Can Help Your Social Media Strategy - Add Me!

What separates LinkedIn from the other major players in social media (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest) is that it is a social network created for business networking purposes. People visit the other social networks for a variety of reasons, but people that log in to LinkedIn do so with business in mind. For a business, specifically a B2B, LinkedIn efforts can be much more beneficial because there is less noise to compete with and users are much more focused.

LinkedIn provides a lot of value to businesses and individuals that are willing to put the time and effort in to use it correctly. The first step is to set up a complete business profile and encourage all employees to have up to date profiles too. Unfortunately many businesses never move past this first step. Like any other social network, the key to success on LinkedIn is to be active and share with connections and other LinkedIn users. If you aren?t an active member of the community, there is a smaller chance that your business or services will be found by potential prospects and you will lose out on opportunities. Perhaps one of the best ways to get found on LinkedIn is to join groups and become an active member.

There are thousands of groups on LinkedIn, and you are allowed to join up to 50. Unless you have a large social media staff that can keep you active and involved in all 50, it?s probably not realistic to join that many. The best groups to join are the ones that are most related to your business or niche and don?t have too many members. It?s OK to join a few groups with thousands of members, but it?s just a lot harder to get noticed in these groups. By joining smaller communities (a few hundred members), it?s easier to gain visibility. It?s also important to join groups that have an active community. If nobody is posting or sharing with one another and the group has become inactive, look for other opportunities.

Once you?ve joined some groups, be sure to visit them at least a few times a week to look for an opportunity to share your knowledge and get noticed. Browse through the discussions within the group and see if there is anything that you can add. Take the same approach that you would take with blog commenting. Don?t simply write something like, ?I agree.? Instead, take the time to write a thoughtful comment that takes a stance on a subject and proves that you have expertise in the area. Feel free to start your own discussion if there is a current topic that isn?t being discussed yet.

Remember, LinkedIn isn?t just for the HR department to post job openings. It?s a great strategy to get all of your team members active on LinkedIn. Because it?s a place for business to be conducted, some great networking opportunities can arise as long as LinkedIn is being used correctly.

Presenting Rafe Needleman's Outie Awards | Internet & Media ...

Reporter's Roundtable Ep. 128: Rafe's Outie Awards

It has been a fantastic run, but it's time for me to try something new, so I'm leaving CNET. This is my last post for this great company, at least in my current role as Editor at Large.

Instead of boring everyone with the usual departure platitudes or a history of illustrious achievements, I thought I'd give out a few awards to companies, products, and ideas that I covered for CNET, ideas that have stayed with me long after I wrote about them. So here they are: The Rafe Needleman I'm Outta Here Awards. The Outies. There are 10, of course.

If you're wondering where to find me next: Evernote. I'm going to be a developer advocate for this great company, which, if you've followed my work over the years, you know I really believe in. I'll also be writing -- with editorial independence, they tell me -- about new tech concepts that I see, best ideas for entrepreneurs (from my new vantage point), and productivity. Read more on the Evernote blog. You can e-mail me at rafe@evernote.com, and follow me on Twitter, or Facebook, or Google+.

And now, for the first -- and hopefully last -- time ever...

1. Best customer experience: Apple
I am not a fanboy. I am not a fanboy. I am not a fanboy. Maybe if I say it enough you'll eventually believe it. But even when the Apple products I buy fail me completely (which is often), I still love the company, because its customer service and repair experience is so painless. That's right: Apple hardware is horribly unreliable. And I keep buying it. Good job, Apple. I hate myself.

2. Best online retailer: Everyone's refurb and outlet store
Unless you like paying for packaging, you don't have to pay full price for many tech hardware items: laptops, TVs, DVRs, you name it. Buy refurbished units. Usually they're just as good as brand-new items, look just as shiny, and come with the same warranty. They might be half a spec out of date. It's worth it.

Read: How to save money with refurb laptops

3. Worst pervasive technology: 3D TV
These are my awards, so I get to throw darts as I want, and 3D is one bubble I'd like to pop. Yes, it's amazing. For most of you. But for some of us, all 3D TV and movies do is give us headaches.

On the plus side, the non-3D showings of 3D movies are hardly ever crowded.

4. Best new idea for e-mail: Self-deleting messages
Unread e-mails are barnacles. They stick around in your in-box, just clogging things up, taking up space, and possibly slowing things down. And many e-mails, especially commercial messages from companies you do business with, are pointless after a short period of time. So why do they stick around? They don't have to.

5. The simplicity award: Trello
Simple wins. Sure, there are apps and services and gadgets that do everything. But we are all busy. We are overloaded with multiple ways to do things, options to consider, and other cognitive noise. That's why the most successful products these days strip down the cruft and focus on the elemental experience. I can think of many examples: Sparrow (recently acquired by Google); Path; Instagram; Groupiter (my review). But one Web app -- still relatively unknown -- sticks with me as having a brilliantly simple and fluid interface for what is usually a cluttered and unpleasant thing to deal with: Task management. The app is Trello. I recommend it.

6. Most anticipated product (by me): Space Monkey
Sometimes, bizarrely, complicated solutions to simple problems do have a certain elegance. Especially when this complexity leads to increased robustness. Want an example? Evolution.

My favorite example of a complex solution to a simple problem is Space Monkey, an upcoming product that will offer cloud storage with more speed than Dropbox, dramatically better prices, and potentially more data safety -- or so the founders say. How? By creating a mesh of storage access points, with some of the points being hardware that resides on customers' local networks. Intellectually, I love the idea behind this product. I am eager to see if it really delivers.

7. Best thing the government has done for startups: The JOBS Act
For the most part, the U.S. government has kept its hands off the Internet and out of technology. The bigger the tech economy gets, though, the more intervention we get. And sometimes it's actually in the right direction. The JOBS Act makes it easier for startups to raise money from the general public ("crowdfunding"), not just from rich tech investors. I covered the story in some depth and am aware of the imperfections in its new laws, but overall it's a very positive step that could help small teams with creative ideas get them off the ground.

Read: The JOBS Act: 5 things to look forward to

What I'm waiting for now: A legal revolution that really makes sense of patents. Not holding my breath on that one.

8. Government overreach award: California's smartphone sales tax
With tax rules like this, how is it possible California is in the revenue hole it is? Here's what I'm talking about: When you buy a smartphone in this state, even if it's subsidized by the mobile carrier down to zero dollars, you have to pay sales tax for the full retail sales price, a price you cannot negotiate for or control. I had some tax wonks try to explain to me why that's fair, but it still sounds like state-sponsored robbery.

Read: Taxation without negotiation for Calif. smartphone buyers

9. Best bargain app: Pretty much all of them
You have to be insane to pay $50 for a simple utility for OS X, right? The whole operating system costs less than that. But Sharemouse, which just lets you share a keyboard and a mouse between two side-by-side computers, is actually not overpriced, even at $24.95 per computer (and you need at least two licenses for it to work). True, I still won't buy it, but the economics of software are unique. What I was forced to learn after an argument with the creator of this little utility is that software pricing is perfectly elastic: Charge more, you sell fewer licenses. Charge less, sell more. Total sales revenue: Constant. That's just cool.

However, sell more units and you have to support more users, and that gets expensive. Those $1.99 apps we like can kill their publishers. It can actually make better business sense to price some consumers out of your product, even if, as it is with software, the cost of distributing the app to each new user is nearly zero. The sad conclusion, for everyone except for economics professors? Read the story I wrote.

Read: We're not paying enough for apps

Finally,
10. The boy was he wrong award: Rafe Needleman
Right before the iPad came out, in 2009, I wrote what I thought was a logical and realistic treatise on why tablets wouldn't sell. Oops. To make matters worse, I predicted that the CrunchPad (later called the JooJoo, and after that just "the lovely glass serving tray in Rafe's office") could actually sell better than an Apple tablet if it undercut Apple's price by a few hundred bucks.

I am not proud of this prediction. I just hope the arguments I put forth were thought-provoking and entertaining.

I'm also delighted I was wrong, because the iPad is a staggeringly great product. For me, this tablet has changed my relationship with media and games, much for the better. It's also leading yet another revolution in technology design. It's great to watch. And write about. But smartly, next time.

Read: Why consumers won't buy tablets

So thanks, CNET, for a fun ride. Thanks, readers, for reading. It's all a writer wants. For now, I'm outta here.

Germany welcomes ECB promise to secure euro

(AP) ? Germany's finance minister on Friday welcomed a pledge by the European Central Bank's president to do what is needed to save the euro, though he also stressed that politicians must themselves act to resolve countries' problems.

Mario Draghi said Thursday the ECB would "do whatever it takes to preserve the euro." His comments raised expectations he could step in to lower high borrowing costs for countries like Spain and Italy ? possibly by buying government bonds.

The ECB has bought bonds to fight the crisis over the past two years, but has kept the program on pause for months. The bond purchases were not popular in Germany, which feared the ECB was taking on excessive risk and claimed governments should bear the responsibility of restoring confidence in their economies by reducing public debt.

A ministry statement Friday said Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble welcomes Draghi's pledge to "take the necessary measures to secure the euro in the framework of the existing ECB mandate."

"The condition for this is that policymakers also take and implement the necessary measures to deal with the financial and confidence crisis," it added. "In the first place stand the reform efforts of the countries themselves."

The statement went on to list efforts that Spain and Italy have embarked on to get their budgets in order and embark on structural reforms, and said that programs launched by Portugal and Ireland in exchange for bailouts "are on the right track." It didn't mention Greece.

The Finance Ministry did not say anything about what measures the ECB might take.

What is Cisco Certification? - Information Technology IT Training ...

Cisco certification is somewhat of a misnomer. Cisco is actually the name of a company that specializes in building computer networks. The Cisco certification means the holder of the certification can build, troubleshoot and manage a computer network for a company, organization or office. Certification levels vary from Entry to Architect, and each level requires different education and training. As you climb the ladder of certifications, you become more and more adept at computer networks. At the architect level, you can even begin to train other people in Cisco networking. The Cisco company offers assistance to interested parties who seek to train others.

What are the career opportunities working with Cisco systems?

As the world of technology grows and changes, the need for computers and networking them together is becoming more and more apparent. As long as there is a need for a computer, there will be a need for someone to connect them to a network. As long as computers will need to be networked for security, printers and other reasons, there will be a need for a Cisco certified network engineer.

Opportunities for Cisco trained technicians vary by certification. The more certifications you hold, the better the opportunities for work and advancement. You may find employment with a company that specializes in networking, or you may seek to start your own business. Either way, there is always an opportunity for employment.

Can I earn more money with Cisco certification?

The potential to earn a great deal of money is certainly there with Cisco training. The best opportunities, however, lie in one?s ability to travel. A person willing to travel across a state, several states or the country may find the opportunities to be endless. As more and more businesses, buildings and organizations grow or remodel, the computer systems will need appropriate updating. Cisco certified technicians can earn quite well for themselves.

How do I get Cisco certification?

The easiest way to get Cisco certification is find a school that offers the courses. Cisco offers the course at many locations throughout the US and the world. Each certification you can earn requires classroom experience, a textbook, and two exams. The two exams are a written exam and a proficiency exam. The proficiency exam is a lab-based exam that tests a student?s abilities with an actual Cisco network. The types of exams are determined by the type of class.

While many programs require at least a bachelor?s degree in computer science or information systems, the Cisco program is a certificate. Higher education is not absolutely necessary, but taking a college degree in addition to the certification process will aid in job placement and salary.
