Benefits of Hiring a Lawyer for Your Personal Injury Case ...

Last updated 1 day ago

Have you been involved in an auto accident or been the victim of medical malpractice? These are two matters that fall within the category of personal injury law. If you have been injured in this type of accident, you may be facing extensive medical bills and a loss of income that is quickly adding to your stress. One of the benefits of hiring a personal injury lawyer is that the attorney will advocate on your behalf so you can receive the compensation to which you are entitled. Other benefits include:

Lawyers Who Know the Law
Your case may involve multiple claims or multiple parties. Part of your lawyer?s job is to determine who should be held legally responsible for your accident. This includes analyzing issues like comparative negligence and damages.

Experience That Helps Create Success
An experienced personal injury lawyer will have a good idea of what your injuries are worth, your likelihood of success at trial, and more. Lawyers can also help increase the value of your case. If you are dealing with an insurance adjuster or another party?s attorney, they may mislead you about the value of your claim and the law. An attorney will protect your rights and likely increase the value of your case because he or she knows the law and will know when the other party is misrepresenting the law.

Having an Advocate in Court
Some cases settle before going to court, but if your case goes to trial, you need the experience of a personal injury lawyer on your side. An attorney not only understands the law, but trial and courtroom procedures as well.

If you have sustained injuries in an accident, it is important to consider the benefits of hiring an attorney. The personal injury lawyers at Fox and Fox Attorneys at Law know what it takes to ensure that you receive fair compensation for your accident. Call (888) 480-1439 to schedule a consultation.

Nokia + Microsoft Kick Off $23M AppCampus Incubator: Over $1M Going To 36 Startups

appcampusNext week Nokia and Microsoft are expected to unveil the first handset(s) running on Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 platform, and today comes news about the apps they hope will lure in more users to buy them. AppCampus, an $18 million?JV between Microsoft, Nokia and Aalto University in Finland, first announced in May, to foster more app development on the platform, said it has doled out the first $1 million-plus of their budget on 36 developers out of a total of 900 submissions, an average of $30,000 per app, although individual investments over the course of the JV will be between $25,000 and $88,000. Pekka Sivonen, Head of AppCampus, tells me the apps are expected to be coming out starting in October, and will run exclusively on Windows Phone and "other Nokia platforms" for their first six months -- potentially touching some 500 million devices out in the market today.

93% Farewell, My Queen

If you are expecting a French film chronicling the last days of Marie Antoinette, then you may be in for a slight disappointment. Brilliantly directed by the Benoit Jacquot (who also co-wrote the much less impressive script) and starring Diane Kruger as Marie Antoinette and Lea Seydoux, who plays one of the Queen's readers named Sidonie Laborde, and is also the protagonist of this film (for some reason) "Farewell, My Queen" is advertised as the story of the last days of Marie Antoinette, but it's more like the somewhat muted story of the two months before the "last days" of Marie Antoinette. So, even though "Farewell, My Queen" is a better movie than Sofia Coppola's ill advised, indie rock inspired, "Marie Antoinette", due to the faux-final-days story structure, in conjunction with the fact that "Farewell, My Queen" uses Marie Antoinette as a side character, telling the story from the point of view of Sidonie Laborde (a nobody) this is a film which may have many audiences scratching their heads as to why the need to show this particular moment in the life of Marie Antoinette. As I alluded to above, "Farewell My Queen" chronicles a miniscule portion in time during the last months of Marie Antoinette's reign. However, audiences are not treated to "the good part", or the part they undoubtedly came to see. What I mean by this is there are almost no visuals of the actual Revolution, plus (and more importantly) we don't actually get to witness the final days of Marie Antoinette's life simply because "Farewell, My Queen" curiously plays out through the eyes of one of her ladies-in-waiting. Instead, audiences are forced to sit through a pseudo-love story that focuses not on the very interesting end of Marie Antoinette's reign, but on the minutiae right before it! This film is the equivalent of sitting through the love story of Jack and Rose, with the movie ending just before the Titanic strikes the iceberg. Yes, I am aware that this is a script which was adapted from a critically acclaimed novel by Chantal Thomas, BUT it still doesn't make the story's focus any less misguided. I mean, there are some scenes which do attempt to create a somewhat intriguing love story, an aspect which must be fully accredited to some fantastic mood setting by Jacquot, but in the same vein, this film never rises above said simplistic love story. Side Note: Another issue many audiences will likely come across is how frivolously "Farewell, My Queen" throws its viewers right into the deep end of this story, with little exposition. In fact, the greatest individual flaw which hinders "Farewell, My Queen" will be seen in the audiences immediate realization that neither Jacquot's visuals or the engaging performances (which I will speak about later) are going to give those not formally versed in the players of the French Revolution and the fall of Versailles, the background information they may desperately desire, as this film half-introduces more and more characters of seeming importance. So, do yourself a favor, if you are going to see "Farewell, My Queen" (at the very least) peruse the Marie Antoinette Wiki page before going to see this film. With that said, the visuals (the set design in conjunction with the director) are somewhat breathtaking at times, due to Jacquot making some very brave directorial choices, including tons of long takes which trail behind characters as they weave in and out of crowds, giving audiences an intimate feeling of the atmosphere of late 1700's France, and a few beautifully constructed shots of the landscapes. And I guess it doesn't hurt that the two female leads, Seydoux and Kruger, both give engaging performances. But even if Kruger's interpretation of Antoinette is one of the best I've ever seen and Seydoux is so captivating to watch as she effortlessly takes control of the movie every time she is on screen, there is simply not enough in the story or the writing to give reasoning to the eccentric behavior or motives behind the actions of Marie Antoinette or (more importantly) give a reason as to why Sidonie is so infatuated with her. So, even though, in the latter half of the film (more than an hour in) Jacquot does create an atmosphere which allows these characters to somewhat blossom, many will find it hard to care about a Marie Antoinette story that contains no beheadings. Final Thought: Based on a "last days" plot which attempts to imitate a much better film like "Downfall", even with some spectacular direction and two engaging female performances, "Farewell, My Queen" is nothing more than this year's "My Week With Marilyn", telling a story which focuses on characters nobody really cares about, rather than simply creating a storyline around the life/last days of (in this case) Marie Antoinette. So, even if you are a Marie Antoinette fan, with the overall structure the way it is, "Farewell, My Queen" is nothing more than DVD worthy at best. Early Isaac losses muted compared with other storms

(Reuters) - Hurricane Isaac has caused up to $1 billion in economic losses for offshore energy properties and up to $1.5 billion in insured losses onshore in Louisiana and neighboring states, disaster modeler Eqecat said on Wednesday.

While the estimates are early and likely to rise, they suggest that Isaac, now downgraded to a tropical storm, will ultimately be a much less damaging storm than 2005's Hurricane Katrina, a larger and more powerful cyclone that hit the same region.

A fuller loss picture was expected later on Wednesday and into early Thursday as Isaac passes over New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Scientists warned there was still plenty of room for more damage to develop.

"The storm is not even over, the storm has not moved away from Louisiana yet, we haven't seen all it's going to dish up," said Michael Kistler, a director at RMS, another of the major disaster modeling firms.

Shares in major insurers were little moved in midday trading, as analysts and ratings agencies said it appeared Isaac would have little to no impact on the industry.

Eqecat, like RMS a modeler whose software is used by the insurance industry, said the offshore losses were in the range of $500 million to $1 billion. Those are economic losses, however, which are as a rule higher than insured losses. The insured figure is due later on Wednesday.

Onshore, where insured estimates are already available, losses are in a range of $500 million to $1.5 billion, the firm said. That estimate covers property losses and business interruption policies as well as energy production.

If the early trends hold, Isaac would not crack the top-10 list of worst hurricanes by inflation-adjusted losses. Last year's Hurricane Irene, which is 10th on that list, caused about $4.3 billion in losses.

Eqecat peer AIR Worldwide is expected to release its own loss estimate in the next day or so. The two firms often differ in their estimates.

"Because it slowed down and kind of stalled, the winds and the rain impacting New Orleans are going to last a lot longer than they would have had the storm just progressed inland," AIR principal scientist Tim Doggett said of Isaac in an interview. "That's going to impact our losses that we'll see."

SURGE DAMAGE

Some coastal areas have seen more than 10 feet of storm surge from Isaac -- the water that a tropical cyclone pushes forward as it comes on land -- according to the latest National Hurricane Center estimates. Storm surge caused more than $21 billion in losses when Katrina hit seven years ago to the day.

Even well inland, as far north as Indiana by some projections, heavy rains are likely in coming days. The rains will be too late to save crops that may have experienced $20 billion in insured damage from a punishing drought.

Along the Gulf Coast, the most exposed insurers include State Farm, Allstate Corp and Southern Farm Bureau on the residential side, and Travelers, Zurich and CNA on the commercial side.

After last year's record-breaking losses from severe tornadoes, those insurers and their peers have had a much quieter 2012, leaving them better prepared financially for this year's hurricane season.

A spokeswoman for State Farm, which has more than 21 percent of all auto and homeowners' policies in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, said the insurer had teams in place to begin the claims process but that it was too early for any hard data on claim volumes.

European reinsurers, which would suffer some of the biggest losses in a major natural disaster, were reacting calmly to Isaac thus far. Reinsurers Munich Re and Hannover Re said it was too early to estimate possible damage.

"We are relaxed about it," said one reinsurance source, who asked not to be named.

How Family Holidays can benefit your Child's Education | travelling ...

Families who are looking for holiday destinations to travel to together would benefit greatly if they broadened their horizons, and looked a bit further than the Paradise Island or Spanish Costa resort. Combining a holiday with an educational experience could end up being one of the most memorable vacations you and your family take together.

Kids will really enjoy researching their holiday destination before they go, not only will they learn about the history of a country, the demographics and the culture, it will give them a few lessons on how to use the Internet as a research tool, which is paramount these days to children?s education. Get them to choose places they want to visit ? you could even get them involved in booking tickets.

Armed with loads of valuable information about their destination, children would have already acquired bucket loads of general knowledge before they get there. Exploring the world, experiencing different cultures and meeting new people, will give children an exciting opportunity to learn new things out of the boring confines of the rigid classroom environment.

Adventure holidays offer a chance for children to pick up some basic practical skills. They will love the challenge, stimulation and excitement of being outdoors, and the chance to learn new things, whether it is how to identify a certain animal, plant or even a weather pattern.

Kids can learn simple and practical life skills like how to put up a tent, tie various knots, build campfires and cook on an open fire without all the modern bells and whistles they have at home. An integral part of a child?s education?is having the chance to do things, learn things and experience things hands on.

Kids love getting dirty, wet, muddy and tired. A, a day spent out in nature is one of a child?s favourite things to do. And they love it when the parents get involved and they can do stuff together as a family.

Working as a team is an important life skill for everyone to have mastered. Going on a camping holiday is one of those opportunities for kids to learn about working as a team and to interact with other kids who may be camping.

Rather than having kids strain to keep awake in a boring natural science class, take them down to a holiday at the sea, explore the rock pools, identify the birds, let them see first-hand how the tides work, show them how to thread a fishing line, pick mussels off the rocks and who knows, what they might get a chance to see lurking under some of the rocks. Chances are they will not only enjoy it thoroughly, but that will be one lesson in marine life they will never forget, and that they will pass on to their own children.

Going on holiday to a nearby wine farm? Enquire about the cellar tours, kids will be delighted with the chance to explore underground cellars and who knows, you may even plant a seed that ignites a career choice later down the line. There are so many fabulous destinations around the world that are not only a break from home, but a wonderful educational experience for the whole family.

SEAL book raises questions about bin Laden's death

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Navy SEAL who participated in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden says the terrorist apparently was shot in the head as he looked out his bedroom door, contradicting previous official accounts describing him as being shot after ducking back into his room and possibly reaching for a weapon.

Former SEAL Mark Bissonnette describes the 2011 raid in Pakistan under the pseudonym Mark Owen in "No Easy Day," to be published next week. The Associated Press purchased a copy of the book Tuesday.

The account may again raise questions over whether the raid was intended to capture or simply kill bin Laden, though Bissonnette says the SEALs were told to capture him if he surrendered.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor would not comment on the conflicting accounts late Tuesday.

Almost all of us are more likely engaged with video streaming particularly when we have seen them very interesting. Approximately roughly 80percent of Internet surfers view web videos every now and then. The percentage of web viewers is expected to increase to approximately greater than 90percent within a couple of years or less. The very first series that caused it to be online was aired in 1997 but was eventually cancelled as a result of technological restrictions and financial disability that held the assembly up.

kickstarter - The buzz of those Internet series has risen up from then on and also the consequence of its increasing availability has progressed as a result of improvement of broadband technology and video streaming capacity. Green Blog: Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon Organize Artists Against Fracking

Yoko Ono said it was not hard to recruit more than 180 artists to help convince Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York not to allow natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale through the hydraulic fracturing process known as fracking.

She reached out to some friends and soon, dozens of artists, many of them with homes in New York, agreed to publicly join the campaign.

Ms. Ono said she was leaving it up to the artists to design their own advocacy. ?When people say, ?What can I do?? I say, ?think creatively,?? she said during an interview at The New York Times. ?I?m thinking about spirit and brains. We have the brains and the spirit.?

She and her son, Sean Lennon, planned to formally announce their ?Artists Against Fracking? coalition? Wednesday and said they had sent a letter to Governor Cuomo requesting a meeting.

The artists and their allies, including Lady Gaga, Paul McCartney, David Geffen and Deepak Chopra, are jumping into the debate over fracking at the 11th hour, just as New York officials are finalizing regulations to govern the new drilling. A decision is expected soon over whether and where fracking will be allowed in New York State, and under what conditions.

Mother and son said the artists would use their sway with their fan base to spread the message through social media and other events that fracking threatens watersheds and wilderness areas. Mr. Lennon wrote evocatively in an opinion piece in The Times on Tuesday about spending time on the family farm Ms. Ono and John Lennon bought in the Catskills in the 1970s before he was born.

?What distinguishes us is that we have the ear of our audiences and we have a collective presence,? Mr. Lennon said of the artists.

Ms. Ono, who said she?s been quietly supporting the anti-fracking cause for two years, wants New York to move away from fossil fuels and embrace renewable energy and become ?an ecologically beautiful model state.?

She and Mr. Lennon spoke passionately about their hopes for the coalition, and as relatives often do, kept interrupting each other.

?Let me just finish,? said Mr. Lennon, 36.

?Let me say something,? said Ms. Ono, 79, wearing her trademark dark oval?shape glasses.

Home Improvement And You: Tips For A Better Home | lmaureen.com

Here?s a simple way of fixing gaps at the bottom of poorly fitted interior doors. Sandwich a section of timber (cut to the width of the door) between two pieces of paneling. Leave each piece of paneling sticking out beyond the upper side of the two by two by about one inch. Slip the extension over the bottom of the door and screw each piece of paneling into place against each side of the door.

Scraping paint off of kitchen cabinets may not seem like a viable task for home improvement, but actually it is one of the easiest, least expensive ways to update your house. It may be time consuming stripping layers of paint but the finished product will more than make it worth it.

When thinking about replacing your driveway and you are considering brick there are some pros and cons. The look of a brick driveway is very appealing and you can certainly design the driveway in the way you would like. The cost is a very big disadvantage, brick driveways can be a very costly expenditure.

At the beginning of the year, assess your home and see what things you?d like to improve or work on. Make a list of these things and prioritize them. Then, systematically work your way through the list until you?ve accomplished everything on it. Then, start the process over again the following year until you have your dream home.

When it comes to home improvement, small additions such as power strips and surge protectors can be extremely beneficial. Power strips allow for you to easily turn off groups of electronics, saving money on energy. Most surge protectors will protect your electronics from lightning strikes and power surges.

When taking out a home improvement loan consider the costs of what you are going to do within your home. If you can cut costs and shop around for a better price on materials or even do the job yourself instead of hiring a contractor, you will save yourself some money and interest!

If part of your home improvement entails repainting a door, there are two methods you may utilize to do this. Sometimes, the easiest way to paint a door is to remove it from its hinges and paint it on sawhorses which have been placed on a drop cloth. You can also choose not to remove the door and just paint it in place over a drop cloth. Use a high-quality paint brush and brush in line with the wood?s grain.

If you are looking to invest in repairing your home, whether it is the interior or exterior, a valuable resource for getting ideas and helpful tips and advice are television programs on the home and garden network in your area. Not only will they give you ideas, more often than not, they will show you how to go about tackling the project while giving you motivation to complete your own projects.

If you are putting in new counter tops, or just doing surface fixes in your kitchen, add a decorative back splash. This area behind your counters and between the cabinets is often just painted the same color as the walls. Adding tile, or other decorative touches will really make a dramatic statement in your kitchen.

When cleaning your cabinets, a heavy build up of dirt and grease can be removed by using a commercial grade cleaner. A commercial cleaner with orange oil is designed for cleaning wooden cabinets. This type of commercial cleaner is great for removing large build ups of grease and improving the look of your cabinets.

Know where the water supply shutoff valves are located before you begin a project, especially when working near pipes. You never know when you may need to turn the water off in a bathroom or kitchen, and you should be prepared to prevent a flood if need be. Knowing where the valves are ahead of time will mean you don?t have to frantically look for them later.

If you are considering siding your new home with sustainable siding there are many choices available. The top three sustainable siding materials being used in the green building industry are wood siding, siding made of recycled materials, and cement fiber insulation. Weigh the advantages and disadvantages of all of your options.

A common occurrence in many homes is a leaky shower head. This is caused by a defective or damaged O-ring inside of the head. To stop the leak, simply apply tape to the head, and twist the head off with a pipe wrench. Find an O-ring that fits your head and place it in. Place pipe sealer around the pipe threads and screw the head back on, with a final tightening from the pipe wrench. Then test the head for any further leaks.

Before deciding on how to improve your home, review these tips, and choose the best options for your home, your budget, your family and your situation. Save time, save money and save effort by knowing ahead of time what to avoid and what to strive for when updating your home.

How do I deal with an admin godmodder?

Okay, I'm in a sticky situation. Need advice. I'm in a roleplay where the creator is godmodding with every post. The other players have been rolling with it. Now, it has happened to my character, only I can't really roll with it, because in my last post, I wrote exactly why what has supposedly happened wouldn't happen. I wrote all kinds of safeguards in, not even realizing at the time that was what I was doing, against this. I'm pissed because my character's freewill has been violated, assumptions have been made that wouldn't have been made (presumably) if my post had been read, and no one else in the game has spoken up to address the issue. This person is the creator/admin of the game, so maybe it isn't polite to point and yell 'Godmodder!' on the OOC? Most of the games I've been in or run, the admin/creator wasn't a person to be feared of pissing off. Okay I take that back. I have run a D&D game where boulders fell from the sky when I was pissed at the players, but the DM is basically god of the game, not a player.

I realize I'm still too pissed to talk to this person. I also realize I'm too pissed to handle this with good humor and delicacy. I don't want to quit the game, because I think it is a nice setup and the other players are decent. I don't know what excuse this person has for godmodding, whether they've just never learned roleplaying etiquette or if they are too immature a writer or what. I think whatever I say to this person, I should say it in PMs to avoid embarrassing and possibly escalating tension on the OOC.

So do I treat this person like a naughty child and explain what godmodding is, why it isn't polite or fair to the other players, and suggest how we can fix the bad posts? Include a link here to the Roleplay Academy so someone else can mentor this person?

Do I take the line this person threw me and pretend it isn't godmodding, but just a really bad assumption, tell them it was a bad assumption, and ask for a rewrite?

Do I suck it up and leave? With or without explanation to the other players for why I'm stepping out?

Is there a great solution I haven't thought of? There probably is. Share with the class.

Please PLEASE help me out.

Romney's convention: Big storm, rape controversy

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? His Republican National Convention curtailed by a threatened hurricane, Mitt Romney conceded Sunday that fresh controversy over rape and abortion is harming his party and he accused Democrats of trying to exploit it for political gain.

"It really is sad, isn't it, with all the issues that America faces, for the Obama campaign to continue to stoop to such a low level," said Romney, struggling to sharpen the presidential election focus instead on a weak economy and 8.3 percent national unemployment.

His comments came as aides and party officials hurriedly rewrote the script for the convention, cut from four days to three because of the threat posed by approaching Tropical Storm Isaac. The storm is forecast to gain hurricane strength as it churns through the Gulf of Mexico but to pass well west of the convention city.

The revised schedule included a symbolic 10-minute session on Monday in a nearly empty hall, during which officials intend to launch a debt clock set to zero. The political objective is to show how much the government borrows throughout the convention week.

Officials did not rule out further changes because of the weather, and sidestepped when asked what might happen if, as seemed possible, the storm made landfall in the New Orleans area on the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. That storm killed 1,800 people and devastated the city.

"We're 100 percent full steam ahead on Tuesday," said Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, expressing confidence the one-day delay would be the extent of the cancellations.

Despite concerns about the weather, a mammoth pre-convention celebration went on as planned Sunday night, attended by thousands of delegates and others who flocked to the Rays major league baseball stadium turned into a party venue in nearby St. Petersburg.

Priebus said Romney's nomination would take place on Tuesday, as would approval of a conservative party platform.

The former Massachusetts governor delivers his acceptance speech Thursday night before a prime time TV audience, then sets out on the final leg of a quest for the presidency that spans two campaigns and more than five years.

Polls make the race a close one, with a modest advantage for President Barack Obama.

For all the Republican attempts to make the election a referendum on the incumbent's handling of the economy, other events have intervened.

An incendiary comment more than a week ago by Rep. Todd Akin, the party's candidate for a Senate seat in Missouri, is among the intrusions. In an interview, he said a woman's body has a way of preventing pregnancy in the case of a "legitimate rape." The claim is unsupported by medical evidence, and the congressman quickly apologized.

Romney and other party officials, recognizing a political threat, unsuccessfully sought to persuade Akin to quit the race. Democrats have latched onto the controversy, noting not only what Akin said but also his opposition to abortion in all cases.

"Now, Akin's choice of words isn't the real issue here. The real issue is a Republican Party ? led by Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan ? whose policies on women and their health are dangerously wrong," said a recent letter from Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairwoman of the Democratic Party.

The party also posted a Web video that emphasizes the Republican Party's opposition to abortion and digitally alters the Republicans' "Romney-Ryan" logo to say "Romney Ryan Akin."

Interviewed on Fox, his comments broadcast on Sunday, Romney said the controversy over Akin "hurts our party and I think is damaging to women."

Romney spent the day in New Hampshire where he has a summer home. Aides said he was spending part of his afternoon practicing his convention speech with the use of a teleprompter.

Delegates marked time as the storm raked the Florida Keys to the south of the convention city en route to a projected landfall along the Gulf Coast.

"Somebody raised the prospect of marathon Monopoly. I favor the game Risk, but we'll see," said Tom Del Beccaro, chairman of the California delegation. I think people will just be ready for Tuesday and be pretty energetic then."

Hundreds of miles away, Romney said he was concerned for the safety of those who "are going to be affected" by the storm, which is predicted to worsen into a hurricane as it heads for landfall along the Gulf Coast.

In a presidential race defined by its closeness, Republican office-holders past and present said the party must find a way to appeal to women and Hispanics, and they said the economy was the way to do it.

"We have to point out that the unemployment rate among young women is now 16 percent, that the unemployment rate among Hispanics is very high, that jobs and the economy are more important, perhaps, than maybe other issues," said Arizona Sen. John McCain, who lost to Obama in 2008.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush agreed, saying that Romney "can make inroads if he focuses on how do we create a climate of job creation and economic growth." If he succeeds, "I think people will move back towards the Republican side," Bush added.

Obama leads Romney among women voters and by an overwhelming margin among Hispanics, but he trails substantially among men.

The result is a race that is unpredictably close, to be settled in a small number of battleground states.

An estimated $500 million has been spent on television commercials so far by the two candidates, their parties and supporting outside groups, nearly all of it in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada. Those states account for 100 electoral votes out of the 270 needed to win the White House.

Republicans have made no secret that they are eager to expand the electoral map to include Pennsylvania, Michigan, perhaps running mate Paul Ryan's Wisconsin and even Minnesota, states with 68 electoral votes combined.

All four are usually reliably Democratic in presidential campaigns. Yet Romney has a financial advantage over the president, according to the most recent fundraising reports, and a move by the Republicans into any of them could force Obama to dip into his own campaign treasury in regions he has considered relatively safe.

Making his case for the support of female voters, Romney said in the Fox interview: "'Look, I'm the guy that was able to get health care for all of the women and men in my state. ... 'I'm very proud of what we did."

It was a rare voluntary reference to the legislation he signed as governor of Massachusetts that required the state's residents to purchase coverage, the sort of mandate that is at the heart of Obama's federal legislation that conservatives oppose and Romney has vowed to see repealed.

Romney added that the state law was put into place "without cutting Medicare, which obviously affects a lot of women."

That was a reference to the federal law, which cut more than $700 billion in projected Medicare costs to help provide health care to millions who could not otherwise afford it.

Medicare generally favors Democrats as a political issue, but Romney has aggressively sought to cut into that advantage. He released a new television ad criticizing Obama's handling of the program with a catchphrase of "It ain't right."

The streets around the convention hall were crowded with police, National Guard and other security officials, who manned checkpoints in squads rather than individually.

A few hundred protesters gathered in a park about a half-mile from the convention vowed to make their point regardless of Tropical Storm Isaac. They set out large blocks of ice spelling out the words "middle class," and left them to melt on a warm, humid day, a gesture meant to signify middle class disappearance in a tough economy.

Bush and McCain were interviewed on NBC, and Priebus spoke on CNN.

Romneys practice speeches at school auditorium

WOLFEBORO, N.H. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his wife, Ann, spent Sunday evening at a local high school auditorium rehearsing their speeches to the Republican National Convention.

The Romney campaign said the presumptive nominee expected to continue preparing for his nomination acceptance speech on Monday. Romney was scheduled to speak Thursday night at the convention while his wife was to address the delegates on Tuesday night.

Both were using a teleprompter as part of their preparations. An electronic visual text isn't unusual for major speeches. Republicans have turned the mention of a teleprompter into a laugh line and a dig at President Barack Obama because of his routine use of the device.

Romney briefly addressed reporters near his New Hampshire lakeside vacation home as aides and party officials scrambled to reorganize the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., because of weather concerns. He had been silent on the developing weather conditions, aside from a Twitter message Saturday night.

When asked about the storm, Romney said: "I hope everybody's fine there. I'm concerned about the people that are going to be affected by it." He also predicted "a great convention."

The Gulf Coast was bracing for the possibility that Tropical Storm Isaac could become a dangerous hurricane. The storm has already pushed back the start of the convention by one day.

"We're 100 percent full steam ahead on Tuesday," said Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, expressing confidence the one-day delay would be the extent of the cancellations

Federal emergency officials on Sunday warned residents in Florida and the Gulf states to monitor storm condition and follow the directions of local officials. The storm raked the Florida Keys to the south of the convention city en route to a projected landfall along the Gulf Coast.

(AP) ? Neil Armstrong was a soft-spoken engineer who became a global hero when as a steely-nerved pilot he made "one giant leap for mankind" with a small step onto the moon. The modest man, who had people on Earth entranced and awed from almost a quarter-million miles away, but credited others for the feat, died Saturday. He was 82.

Armstrong died following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures, his family said in a statement. Armstrong had had a bypass operation this month, according to NASA. His family didn't say where he died; he had lived in suburban Cincinnati.

Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon July 20, 1969, capping the most daring of the 20th century's scientific expeditions. His first words after becoming the first person to set foot on the surface are etched in history books and the memories of those who heard them in a live broadcast.

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," Armstrong said.

(Armstrong insisted later that he had said "a'' before man, but said he, too, couldn't hear it in the version that went to the world.)

In those first few moments on the moon, during the climax of a heated space race with the Soviet Union, Armstrong stopped in what he called "a tender moment" and left a patch to commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in action.

"It was special and memorable but it was only instantaneous because there was work to do," Armstrong told an Australian television interviewer this year.

Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the lunar surface, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs.

"The sights were simply magnificent, beyond any visual experience that I had ever been exposed to," Armstrong once said.

The moonwalk marked America's victory in the Cold War space race that began Oct. 4, 1957, with the launch of the Soviet Union's Sputnik 1, a 184-pound satellite that sent shock waves around the world.

Although he had been a Navy fighter pilot, a test pilot for NASA's forerunner and an astronaut, Armstrong never allowed himself to be caught up in the celebrity and glamour of the space program.

"I am, and ever will be, a white socks, pocket protector, nerdy engineer," he said in 2000 in one of his rare public appearances. "And I take a substantial amount of pride in the accomplishments of my profession."

Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley, who interviewed Armstrong for oral histories for NASA, said Armstrong fit every requirement the space agency needed for the first man to walk on moon, especially because of his engineering skills and the way he handled celebrity by shunning it.

?????????"I think his genius was in his reclusiveness," said Brinkley. "He was the ultimate hero in an era of corruptible men."

Fellow Ohioan and astronaut John Glenn, one of Armstrong's closest friends, recalled Saturday how Armstrong was down to the last 15 seconds to 35 seconds of fuel when he finally brought the lunar module Eagle down on the Sea of Tranquility.

"That showed a dedication to what he was doing that was admirable," Glenn said.

A man who kept away from cameras, Armstrong went public in 2010 with his concerns about President Barack Obama's space policy that shifted attention away from a return to the moon and emphasized private companies developing spaceships. He testified before Congress, and in an email to The Associated Press, Armstrong said he had "substantial reservations," and along with more than two dozen Apollo-era veterans, he signed a letter calling the plan a "misguided proposal that forces NASA out of human space operations for the foreseeable future."

Armstrong was among the greatest of American heroes, Obama said in a statement.

"When he and his fellow crew members lifted off aboard Apollo 11 in 1969, they carried with them the aspirations of an entire nation. They set out to show the world that the American spirit can see beyond what seems unimaginable ? that with enough drive and ingenuity, anything is possible," Obama said.

Obama's Republican opponent Mitt Romney echoed those sentiments, calling Armstrong an American hero whose passion for space, science and discovery will inspire him for the rest of his life.

"With courage unmeasured and unbounded love for his country, he walked where man had never walked before. The moon will miss its first son of earth," Romney said.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden recalled Armstrong's grace and humility.

"As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own," Bolden said in a statement.

Armstrong's modesty and self-effacing manner never faded.

When he appeared in Dayton in 2003 to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of powered flight, he bounded onto a stage before 10,000 people packed into a baseball stadium. But he spoke for only a few seconds, did not mention the moon, and quickly ducked out of the spotlight.

He later joined Glenn, by then a senator, to lay wreaths on the graves of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Glenn introduced Armstrong and noted it was 34 years to the day that Armstrong had walked on the moon.

"Thank you, John. Thirty-four years?" Armstrong quipped, as if he hadn't given it a thought.

At another joint appearance, the two embraced and Glenn commented: "To this day, he's the one person on earth I'm truly, truly envious of."

Armstrong's moonwalk capped a series of accomplishments that included piloting the X-15 rocket plane and making the first space docking during the Gemini 8 mission, which included a successful emergency splashdown.

In the years afterward, Armstrong retreated to the quiet of the classroom and his southwestern Ohio farm. Aldrin said in his book "Men from Earth" that Armstrong was one of the quietest, most private men he had ever met.

In the Australian interview, Armstrong acknowledged that "now and then I miss the excitement about being in the cockpit of an airplane and doing new things."

At the time of the flight's 40th anniversary, Armstrong again was low-key, telling a gathering that the space race was "the ultimate peaceful competition: USA versus U.S.S.R. It did allow both sides to take the high road with the objectives of science and learning and exploration."

Glenn, who went through jungle training in Panama with Armstrong as part of the astronaut program, described him as "exceptionally brilliant" with technical matters but "rather retiring, doesn't like to be thrust into the limelight much."

Derek Elliott, curator of the Smithsonian Institution's U.S. Air and Space Museum from 1982 to 1992, said the moonwalk probably marked the high point of space exploration.

The manned lunar landing was a boon to the prestige of the United States, which had been locked in a space race with the former Soviet Union, and re-established U.S. pre-eminence in science and technology, Elliott said.

"The fact that we were able to see it and be a part of it means that we are in our own way witnesses to history," he said.

The 1969 landing met an audacious deadline that President John F. Kennedy had set in May 1961, shortly after Alan Shepard became the first American in space with a 15-minute suborbital flight. (Soviet cosmonaut Yuri A. Gagarin had orbited the Earth and beaten the U.S. into space the previous month.)

"I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before the decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth," Kennedy had said. "No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important to the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish."

The end-of-decade goal was met with more than five months to spare. "Houston: Tranquility Base here," Armstrong radioed after the spacecraft settled onto the moon. "The Eagle has landed."

"Roger, Tranquility," Apollo astronaut Charles Duke radioed back from Mission Control. "We copy you on the ground. You've got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot."

The third astronaut on the mission, Michael Collins, circled the moon in the mother ship Columbia 60 miles overhead while Armstrong and Aldrin went to the moon's surface.

"He was the best, and I will miss him terribly," Collins said through NASA.

In all, 12 American astronauts walked on the moon from 1969 to the last moon mission in 1972.

For Americans, reaching the moon provided uplift and respite from the Vietnam War, from strife in the Middle East, from the startling news just a few days earlier that a young woman had drowned in a car driven off a wooden bridge on Chappaquiddick Island by Sen. Edward Kennedy. The landing occurred as organizers were gearing up for Woodstock, the legendary three-day rock festival on a farm in the Catskills of New York.

Armstrong was born Aug. 5, 1930, on a farm near Wapakoneta in western Ohio. He took his first airplane ride at age 6 and developed a fascination with aviation that prompted him to build model airplanes and conduct experiments in a homemade wind tunnel.

As a boy, he worked at a pharmacy and took flying lessons. He was licensed to fly at 16, before he got his driver's license.

Armstrong enrolled in Purdue University to study aeronautical engineering but was called to duty with the U.S. Navy in 1949 and flew 78 combat missions in Korea.

After the war, Armstrong finished his degree from Purdue and later earned a master's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California. He became a test pilot with what evolved into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, flying more than 200 kinds of aircraft from gliders to jets.

Armstrong was accepted into NASA's second astronaut class in 1962 ? the first, including Glenn, was chosen in 1959 ? and commanded the Gemini 8 mission in 1966. After the first space docking, he brought the capsule back in an emergency landing in the Pacific Ocean when a wildly firing thruster kicked it out of orbit.

Armstrong was backup commander for the historic Apollo 8 mission at Christmastime in 1968. In that flight, Commander Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders circled the moon 10 times, paving the way for the lunar landing seven months later.

Aldrin said he and Armstrong were not prone to free exchanges of sentiment.

"But there was that moment on the moon, a brief moment, in which we sort of looked at each other and slapped each other on the shoulder ... and said, 'We made it. Good show,' or something like that," Aldrin said.

An estimated 600 million people ? a fifth of the world's population ? watched and listened to the landing, the largest audience for any single event in history.

Parents huddled with their children in front of the family television, mesmerized by what they were witnessing. Farmers abandoned their nightly milking duties, and motorists pulled off the highway and checked into motels just to see the moonwalk.

Television-less campers in California ran to their cars to catch the word on the radio. Boy Scouts at a camp in Michigan watched on a generator-powered television supplied by a parent.

Afterward, people walked out of their homes and gazed at the moon, in awe of what they had just seen. Others peeked through telescopes in hopes of spotting the astronauts.

In Wapakoneta, media and souvenir frenzy was swirling around the home of Armstrong's parents.

"You couldn't see the house for the news media," recalled John Zwez, former manager of the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum. "People were pulling grass out of their front yard."

Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins were given ticker tape parades in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles and later made a 22-nation world tour. A homecoming in Wapakoneta drew 50,000 people to the city of 9,000.

In 1970, Armstrong was appointed deputy associate administrator for aeronautics at NASA but left the following year to teach aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

He remained there until 1979 and during that time bought a 310-acre farm near Lebanon, where he raised cattle and corn. He stayed out of public view, accepting few requests for interviews or speeches.

"He didn't give interviews, but he wasn't a strange person or hard to talk to," said Ron Huston, a colleague at the University of Cincinnati. "He just didn't like being a novelty."

Those who knew him said he enjoyed golfing with friends, was active in the local YMCA and frequently ate lunch at the same restaurant in Lebanon.

In 2000, when he agreed to announce the top 20 engineering achievements of the 20th century as voted by the National Academy of Engineering, Armstrong said there was one disappointment relating to his moonwalk.

"I can honestly say ? and it's a big surprise to me ? that I have never had a dream about being on the moon," he said.

From 1982 to 1992, Armstrong was chairman of Charlottesville, Va.-based Computing Technologies for Aviation Inc., a company that supplies computer information management systems for business aircraft.

He then became chairman of AIL Systems Inc., an electronic systems company in Deer Park, N.Y.

Armstrong married Carol Knight in 1999, and the couple lived in Indian Hill, a Cincinnati suburb. He had two adult sons from a previous marriage.

Armstrong's is the second death in a month of one of NASA's most visible, history-making astronauts. Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, died of pancreatic cancer on July 23 at age 61.

Just prior to the 50th anniversary of Glenn's orbital flight this past February, Armstrong offered high praise to the elder astronaut and said that Glenn had told him many times how he wished he, too, had flown to the moon on Apollo 11. Glenn said it was his only regret.

Noted Armstrong in an email: "I am hoping I will be 'in his shoes' and have as much success in longevity as he has demonstrated." Glenn is 91.

At the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles on Saturday, visitors held a minute of silence for Armstrong.

For anyone else who wanted to remember him, his family's statement made a simple request:

"Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

PFT: Raiders' Janikowski injures groin

Matthew+Stafford+Detroit+Lions+v+Oakland+Raiders+y5LcmFG1tiMlGetty Images

There?s little worse than having your starting quarterback leave with an injury in the preseason, but it looks like the Lions got little more than a temporary scare from Matthew Stafford on Saturday.

The Lions quarterback left the game with an injury to his left hand, but x-rays taken during the contest were negative. Stafford, who wore a wrap on the hand, said afterward that he would have returned if it had been a regular season game.

?Probably what would have happened in a regular season game is right after it happened, I would have up for x-rays,? Stafford said, via Anwar Richardson of MLive.com. ?If they would have said they were negative, I would have come back in the game. It feels okay right now. It feels fine, really. It?s scary to look down and see your hand swell up by the second.?

Running back Kevin Smith also seems to have avoided an injury that will keep him out of the lineup for an extended period. The oft-injured running back hurt his ankle early in the second half, but also got good news when x-rays came back negative on Saturday.

?It just gets scary under the pile of those big guys laying on you. It?s just a minor tweak, something I?m pretty sure I can get rid of quick. Just stay in the training room,? Smith said. ?More than anything, I was very scared. Just being that I had a high ankle sprain, I know how long it took to get back healthy. It?s not a high ankle sprain, so that?s positive. I?ll get in the treatment room and get back as soon as I can.?

Given the thin ranks at running back early in the season for Detroit, an injury to Smith would have forced the team to look for backfield help before the season starts. They still might do that, but it doesn?t appear they will be quite as desperate as many feared when Smith hobbled off the field in Oakland.

Now the Lions just need to clear up the status of the two cornerbacks who went down against the Raiders to make the whole night a momentary scare instead of a lingering problem.
