But her story began five years earlier.
?I never imagined that when we met your senior year that I?d be having your baby six years later,? Kaila Burkett, of Greencastle, Pa., said Sunday to her husband, Brandon.
?I didn?t expect her to be the first? baby of the year, Brandon said.
Eisely?s due date was Jan. 9, Kaila said.
?We joked about it (having a New Year?s baby),? said Kaila, 21.
She had been having labor-like symptoms since Thursday, but began having regular contractions New Year?s Eve and arrived at the hospital at about 10:30 p.m.
?I think I?m still in shock,? Kaila said. ?I can?t grasp that the baby I carried for nine months is here.?
?It?ll be a lot of adjusting to, because we are pretty young, but now all of our focus goes to the baby,? said Brandon. ?It?s pretty exciting.?
Eisely was having a quiet first day, crying briefly at one point before going back to sleep. She was delivered by Karen Brindle, a certified nurse midwife with Capital Women?s Care, said hospital spokeswoman Nicole Jovel.
Her grandparents are Doug and Sue Burkett, and Tammy and Shon Duty, all of Greencastle.
The new parents work at her father?s business, ScrapRight Software in Waynesboro, Pa.
The Burketts plan to have more children in the future, but it might be awhile.
The high school sweethearts married in July 2010 and planned to wait a few years before having children.
?I guess you have to take those birth-control pills regularly for them to be effective,? Kaila joked. ?That?s my advice for newlyweds.?
Unexpected, perhaps, but Eisely is a very welcome addition the family, the parents said.
